An older Google TV device can still be useful as a second-screen streamer, a way to show photos, or a place to check a compatible camera feed. First identify what you own: “Google TV” is a platform used on different products, and the model determines which apps, settings and features are available. The ideas below apply to supported functions documented for Chromecast with Google TV and Google Cast; confirm the options on your own device before relying on them.
1. Keep it as a streamer for another room
Move the device to a bedroom, guest room or workshop TV and use it for supported streaming apps or casting. Google Cast lets compatible apps send media to a TV, while the sender can control supported playback. Google describes the Cast SDK as a way for apps to direct streaming video and audio to a TV or sound system: Google Cast documentation.
This is most useful when the device still runs the services you want and the second screen has a suitable connection. App support and performance vary; an older unit may not offer the same app selection or responsiveness as a newer streamer.

Use photo casting or Google Photos access to put pictures and videos on a larger screen. Google’s support index also documents ambient screensaver settings, but that does not mean every Google TV model can run the same continuous slideshow. Check the options and apps available on your specific device rather than assuming it will behave like a dedicated digital photo frame.

3. Check a compatible Nest camera feed on a TV
A supported Nest camera feed can be streamed to a television, making an existing screen convenient for a quick live view. Treat this as a way to check a compatible feed—not as a dedicated security monitor, recording system or substitute for a security setup. Camera compatibility and available commands depend on the camera, streaming device and account configuration.

4. Give another HDMI screen streaming capability
A spare television or monitor may be a useful home for the device if it has a suitable HDMI input, reliable Wi-Fi and nearby power. Google’s product sheet for Chromecast with Google TV lists HDMI, Wi-Fi and power requirements; it specifies up to 4K HDR at 60 FPS for that model, subject to a suitable display and broadband connection. The sheet also lists a required 5V, 1.5A power supply. Those are specifications for the described Chromecast model, not every product called Google TV.

Before moving it, check the display’s resolution and content-protection compatibility as well as the device’s power arrangement. An HDMI adapter or a monitor that accepts an HDMI plug is not by itself a guarantee that streaming will work. Setup requirements and model details are in Google’s product information sheet.
5. Use it as a music or audio casting target
Google Cast supports music and other audio as well as television and movies. If the connected TV or attached sound system is already in a convenient place, the older device can act as a casting destination for supported audio apps. Google also documents moving a media session between connected devices, which can help when switching where playback is heard.

The experience depends on the app and connected equipment: a TV must be on, and audio comes through the display or its attached sound system. Review Google’s Cast documentation for the general capabilities; not every app supports casting.
Check these things before choosing a new role
- Identify the hardware. Confirm whether you have Chromecast with Google TV or another Google TV product; model-specific specifications and settings do not apply universally.
- Check the needed feature and app. Look on the device and in Google’s current support information to see whether the service, photo feature or camera function is available for your model.
- Check the screen, network and power. A suitable HDMI display, Wi-Fi connection and power source are necessary for the proposed setup; display compatibility can also matter.
- Match the job to the device. Occasional playback or a quick live view is different from continuous business signage, a permanent slideshow or security recording. The cited Google materials do not establish app compatibility for signage or a universal update-support period for all Google TV devices.
