The old mobile “300ms click delay” was a browser wait between a tap and its click event, giving the browser time to check whether the user intended a double-tap zoom. On a mobile-optimized page, start with a device-width viewport and native links and buttons; add touch-action: manipulation only when it suits the interaction and works in your supported browsers. Avoid disabling zoom or intercepting touch events globally to chase a faster response.
Why the 300ms click delay happened
Historically, some mobile browsers waited roughly 300–350ms after a touch ended before dispatching a click, because a second tap might mean “zoom in.” That figure describes the old browser behavior, not a measurement of present-day tap latency. Chrome for Developers explains the history and the mobile-optimized-page remedy in its article about the 300ms tap delay.
Modern browser behavior often avoids that wait on pages configured for mobile screens. The right fix is therefore not necessarily a JavaScript library: first make sure the page and its interactions let the browser respond natively.
1. Set a device-width viewport
For a page designed to fit mobile screens, put this in the document’s <head>:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
This tells the browser to lay out the page at the device’s width instead of using a wider desktop-style layout scaled down for display. Chrome for Developers identifies the device-width viewport as the preferred way to remove the historical delay on mobile-optimized sites. It is not a substitute for responsive design: text and controls should remain usable at the resulting width.
2. Apply touch-action: manipulation where it helps
The CSS value touch-action: manipulation indicates that an element’s touch interaction does not need double-tap zoom. It can let the browser handle taps promptly while retaining other browser gestures, including pinch zoom. WebKit documents fast single taps with this value across zoom scales, and the Pointer Events specification describes how such CSS directives inform browser gesture handling.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
For example, apply it to controls rather than indiscriminately changing gesture behavior across the page:
button, a { touch-action: manipulation; }
Use a selector that matches the actual interaction design, and check behavior in the browsers and devices your site supports. Browser-support statements in older articles may describe an earlier state; the available sources do not establish an exhaustive current browser-and-version matrix.

3. Keep native click handling when it is already prompt
Use ordinary links, buttons, and click handlers unless testing on a supported device shows a real delay. The FastClick project’s README notes that most mobile browsers, including Chrome and Safari, no longer had the historical delay by late 2015, and warns that the library can cause problems on newer browsers. That historical note is not a current compatibility survey, but it supports a practical rule: do not add synthetic event handling without a demonstrated need.
4. Reserve legacy polyfills for a verified legacy requirement
If your site must support an older browser that still exhibits the delay, test a polyfill against that browser and your specific controls before adopting it. FastClick describes generating synthetic clicks after touchend; this extra event handling can interact badly with native clicks or other scripts. Its README says it offers no benefit on newer browsers. A polyfill is a targeted compatibility measure, not a default optimization for modern sites.

5. Do not cancel touch events globally
A touch listener that might call preventDefault() can make the browser wait before allowing scrolling, because it must determine whether the page will cancel the gesture. Avoid intercepting touch events across the whole document merely to make clicks seem faster. Chrome’s guidance on scrolling interventions discusses passive listeners and CSS touch-action as ways to avoid unnecessary blocking.
Keep scrolling and browser gestures working as users expect. If an interaction genuinely needs custom touch handling, limit the listener to that interaction and ensure it does not block unrelated page movement.

Choose the least disruptive approach
| Approach | When it fits | Important tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Device-width viewport | A page designed for mobile screens | Requires a readable, usable layout at the device width |
touch-action: manipulation |
Controls where double-tap zoom is not needed | Check supported browsers and intended gesture behavior |
| Native click handling | Most current mobile-optimized pages | Verify on the site’s actual supported devices |
| Legacy polyfill | A required older browser demonstrably has the delay | Adds synthetic-event complexity and can conflict with native behavior |
| Touch-event interception | Only for a specific interaction that truly requires it | Broad cancellation can delay scrolling or disrupt gestures |
When evaluating a change, check the target browser and version, whether double-tap zoom changes, whether pinch zoom remains available, and how much JavaScript or event-handling complexity the fix adds. The W3C Pointer Events specification makes clear that gesture behavior remains under browser control, so testing the actual supported combinations matters.
Keep pinch-to-zoom available
Do not add user-scalable=no as a shortcut. Disabling viewport scaling removes pinch-to-zoom and can create accessibility problems. Chrome’s explanation of the viewport approach says the device-width configuration can remove the old delay while retaining pinch zoom, though double-tap zoom behavior may change. Web.dev likewise cautions against disabling scaling in its touch and mouse interaction explainer.
Test the change on supported devices
- Confirm the viewport: check the page’s document head for the device-width meta tag and verify that the layout is usable at mobile widths.
- Test native controls: tap links and buttons in each supported browser/device combination and observe whether a meaningful delay occurs.
- Try scoped CSS if needed: apply
touch-action: manipulationto the relevant controls, then retest tapping, scrolling, double-tap behavior, and pinch zoom. - Investigate event listeners: if scrolling feels blocked, look for touch listeners that may cancel events and avoid broad interception.
- Use a polyfill only for a confirmed gap: if a required legacy browser still shows the delay, validate the library against that browser and the rest of the page’s event handling.
No current prevalence statistic establishes how many sites or users still encounter this historical issue. Treat a delay as a browser-and-page behavior to reproduce on your own supported devices, rather than assuming every mobile visitor needs a workaround.
