For gaming, a VPN can reduce the chance that other players learn your home IP address—but it cannot guarantee protection from a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. It routes your connection through a VPN server, so peers generally see the VPN endpoint rather than your residential address. If an attacker already knows your IP, or targets the VPN server itself, the VPN may not stop the attack.
Five services named in 2026 gaming-VPN comparisons are NordVPN, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost. Treat them as candidates to evaluate, not a verified ranking: the available comparisons do not establish a universal winner or a measured level of DDoS protection for each service.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do against gaming DDoS attacks
A VPN changes the network address that other players may see when they communicate with you. If your home IP would otherwise be exposed through a peer-to-peer connection or another route, using a VPN can make the VPN endpoint address visible instead. Security.org describes hiding IP addresses as a way VPNs can help prevent DDoS attacks, while noting that the benefit has limits.

A VPN does not make an already-known residential IP disappear from an attacker’s records. An attacker could continue targeting that address, and a sufficiently large attack against the VPN endpoint could affect your connection too. A consumer VPN subscription should not be confused with network infrastructure designed to absorb and filter attacks at scale.

DDoS protection also depends on what is being protected and where an attack occurs. Cloudflare’s documentation describes managed mitigation for network-layer (L3/4) and application-layer (L7) attack vectors. That is a different service category from routing an individual gamer’s traffic through a VPN. Cisco’s IOS XE documentation likewise describes device-level protections for denial-of-service attacks across firewall sessions and VPN routing and forwarding contexts; it is not a promise attached to a consumer VPN subscription.
Five VPNs to consider for DDoS risk reduction
Security.org’s gaming VPN comparison, updated August 25, 2026, names NordVPN, Proton VPN, Private Internet Access, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost among its candidates. Security.org says it evaluated more than 60 VPNs using factors including latency, DDoS protection, speed, server locations, and console compatibility. TechRadar’s June 17, 2026 comparison also includes NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost. These are editorial shortlists, not a controlled head-to-head test establishing which provider best withstands DDoS attacks.

NordVPN
NordVPN appears in both named gaming-VPN comparisons. Before choosing it, check current server locations near your game’s region, supported protocols, router compatibility if needed, and the provider’s exact description of DDoS-related protection. Inclusion in a gaming shortlist is not evidence that it can stop an attack against an IP an attacker already knows.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN appears among Security.org’s gaming VPN candidates. Compare its current protocol and device support with your platform, then test latency and connection stability to the relevant game region. The comparison’s inclusion does not establish a provider-specific DDoS guarantee.

Private Internet Access
Private Internet Access also appears in Security.org’s list. Confirm the current service, protocol, and router support for your setup; then judge whether the added delay and any jitter are acceptable in your game. The available comparison does not establish a measured DDoS-resistance result for this provider.
ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN appears in both Security.org’s and TechRadar’s gaming-VPN comparisons. Check its current server and protocol options, device coverage, and any router setup requirements against your platform and game region. Its appearance on editorial lists should not be read as proof of immunity from DDoS attacks.
Rank #4
- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets

CyberGhost
CyberGhost is also named by both comparisons. Verify current server availability near the game’s servers and confirm that your chosen device or router can use the service as intended. The cited comparisons do not establish that CyberGhost, or any other named VPN, can absorb every attack directed at a VPN endpoint.

A VPN adds a routing step and may add encryption overhead, so a lower ping is not guaranteed. Security.org recommends keeping VPN-added ping under 20 to 40 ms for competitive gaming; that is its editorial recommendation, not a universal threshold or a result measured for every player, provider, or game.

- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Test the route to your game region. A nearby VPN server is not automatically the best choice if its route to the game server is poor. Compare your normal connection with VPN connections through relevant locations.
- Watch both ping and jitter. Average latency alone can hide instability. Check for spikes and inconsistent response times during the kinds of sessions you play.
- Check protocol and consistency. Confirm which protocols are supported on your device or router, and assess how reliably the connection performs over time rather than relying on a headline speed figure from a different test setup.
- Read the exact protection claim. Distinguish IP masking from provider-side attack mitigation. Look for what the provider says it protects, where that protection applies, and what limitations it states; do not infer a guarantee from the phrase “DDoS protection.”
- Confirm platform and router support. A service that works on a PC or phone may not be directly configurable on a console. Check the service, router firmware, and protocol together before relying on a router setup.
- Consider privacy and plan terms. Review current privacy documentation, device limits, renewal terms, and pricing for your region. These details can change and are not established by the gaming-VPN comparisons alone.
How console players can route traffic through a VPN
Some consoles do not offer the same direct VPN configuration options as computers and phones. A compatible router can route console traffic through a VPN, but compatibility depends on the router, firmware, VPN service, and protocol—not just on the router being marketed as gaming hardware.
- Check the VPN service’s router guidance. Confirm that it supports your router model or the router’s firmware and identify the protocols it permits for router connections.
- Check the router’s specifications and firmware. Verify support for the protocol you plan to use, such as WireGuard or OpenVPN, and confirm that the firmware version can run the required VPN configuration.
- Configure the router using the provider’s instructions. Enter only the settings and credentials the provider specifies. Avoid assuming that one provider’s configuration applies to another.
- Connect the console and verify the route. Confirm that the console is using the intended router connection, then check the public IP and test the game connection and latency before a competitive session.
- Keep a recovery route available. If latency, disconnections, or setup problems make gaming worse, switch the console back to its normal connection while troubleshooting the VPN configuration.
TechRadar’s router guide names the ASUS RT-AX86U as one VPN-router option, but that example is not a compatibility guarantee for a particular VPN, firmware version, or console. Check current product and provider documentation before buying or configuring hardware. A VPN-capable router provides a way to route traffic; it does not by itself absorb large-scale attacks or make a player immune.
What to do if an attack is already affecting your connection
Turning on a VPN may help prevent peers from seeing your home IP in some situations, but it does not erase an address an attacker already has. If you suspect an active attack, avoid treating a VPN as a guaranteed fix. Contact your internet service provider to report the disruption and ask what options it offers for handling attacks against your connection. If you use a VPN, its support team can clarify whether its endpoint protections apply to the situation, but do not assume that changing servers or reconnecting will stop an attack against a known address.
