Some unusual 3D printer filaments change a model’s appearance; others are designed to alter its functional properties. Five useful examples are glow-in-the-dark PLA, wood-filled filament, glass-fiber-reinforced PETG, carbon-fiber-reinforced PETG or nylon, and carbon-fiber-filled PC blend. They are editorial picks, not an objective ranking: the right choice depends on the effect or use you want and whether your printer can handle the material.
How to choose a specialty filament
Start by separating visual effects from functional materials. Glow, wood, and marble styles are chiefly associated with distinctive looks or surface character. Fiber-filled materials are marketed for functional properties, but their behavior depends on the base polymer and formulation—not simply on the presence of a fiber.
- Check the material and printer: confirm your printer can reach the product’s specified temperatures and is suitable for that polymer.
- Check the nozzle: manufacturers may recommend a hardened nozzle for abrasive specialty filaments. A wider opening may also be specified for a particular product.
- Check surface and preparation advice: some materials need special bed preparation, and manufacturers may provide product-specific drying guidance.
- Follow the exact product page: settings and requirements are not universal across products with similar names.
Five unusual filament choices
1. Glow-in-the-dark PLA: a visible effect
Glow PLA is a straightforward way to give a printed object a luminous effect after exposure to light. Polymaker says its Panchroma Glow PLA can use typical PLA settings, lists a 190–230°C nozzle temperature and 25–60°C bed temperature, and recommends a hardened nozzle for regular use. Its product guidance states: “Yes – you will need to use a hardened nozzle to print with glow in the dark material.” These are Polymaker’s instructions for that product, not universal settings for glow filament.
For its own PLA Glow product, Anycubic recommends a nozzle at least 0.4 mm in diameter. It lists a 200–230°C printing temperature, 60–70°C bed temperature, 50–250 mm/s speed, and drying at 60–65°C for 6–8 hours. Treat those as Anycubic’s product specifications, not a general recipe: Anycubic PLA Glow guidance.

2. Wood-filled filament: a wood-like appearance
Wood-style filament is sold as a specialty option for prints with a wood-like look or texture. SUNLU’s specialty listing includes wood and marble styles, among other variants: SUNLU specialty filaments. The listing establishes that such products are sold, but it does not establish one standard recipe, composition, or set of print settings for every wood-labeled filament. Check the specific product’s instructions before printing.
3. Glass-fiber-reinforced PETG: a reinforced polymer option
Glass-fiber-reinforced PETG is one of the functional material examples described by ELEGOO. The company presents PETG-GF alongside other reinforced materials for needs such as strength, heat resistance, and durability: ELEGOO’s guide to reinforced filaments. Those claims apply to the named materials and formulations; they do not establish that every glass-fiber filament has the same properties or works on every printer. Use the product’s own temperature, nozzle, and surface guidance.

4. Carbon-fiber-reinforced PETG or high-temperature nylon: a functional choice
ELEGOO describes PETG-CF and PAHT-CF (a high-temperature nylon) as reinforced options intended to address functional needs. Their advertised properties vary with the base polymer and formulation, so “carbon fiber” alone does not guarantee a particular strength, temperature capability, or printability. Verify the specific spool’s requirements and your printer’s compatibility rather than assuming settings transfer between PETG-CF and nylon-based products.
5. Carbon-fiber-filled PC blend: demanding material, specific setup
Prusa describes Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber as a filled PC material with high impact and wear resistance, high-temperature resistance, and dimensional stability. It specifies a hardened nozzle. Prusa also warns that printing directly on smooth PEI can damage the surface and recommends a protective glue-stick layer if using that surface. Other specialty effects worth knowing about
Marble-style, metal-filled, and conductive filaments are also listed as specialty product types. SUNLU includes marble styles in its specialty range, while Fusion3’s materials list identifies wood-filled and metal-filled products as well as glow PLA and conductive PLA: Fusion3 materials list. These listings show that the categories exist; they do not establish a universal formulation, performance, or print setup for every product sold under those labels.

For appearance-first projects, glow or wood-style filament may be the more relevant direction. For a functional part, choose by the base polymer and the exact manufacturer’s stated use case—not by a fiber label alone. In either case, product instructions are the practical authority for nozzle, temperature, bed surface, and material preparation.
