You can start with five useful smart home routines: turn on an entry light after dark, use occupancy to control room lighting, shut down selected devices at bedtime, prepare a comfortable morning scene, and get an alert if a leak is detected. Each connects an event—such as motion, a schedule, or a sensor reading—to an action. The exact triggers and controls depend on your controller, device, software version, and region, so treat these as adaptable templates rather than guaranteed step-by-step recipes.

Before you build: check what your devices can do

Start with the devices and smart home platform you already use. Confirm that the platform exposes the trigger you need, such as motion, a door event, a time, or a leak alert, and the action you want, such as turning on a light or sending a notification. A device category being supported does not mean every model exposes the same controls in every app.

Matter is intended to make accessory setup and cross-platform use easier. Google says Matter devices communicate over the existing home network, while Apple describes Matter as enabling accessories to work across platforms. Neither description guarantees that a specific controller, device, and automation feature will work together; check the current documentation for your exact setup. Google’s Matter setup guidance and Apple’s Matter support information explain their respective ecosystems.

  • Check whether your device needs a hub, bridge, or Thread border router.
  • Confirm that the event and action you want are available in your platform’s automation editor.
  • Consider whether the routine runs locally or depends on a cloud service, and keep an easy manual override.

Home Assistant says its platform runs on home hardware with data stored locally, and that local protocols such as Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread do not need an internet connection. Optional cloud services add functions users choose to enable; this description applies to Home Assistant, not every smart home platform. See Home Assistant’s explanation of data privacy for details.

1. Turn on an entry light after dark

How to shape the routine

Set motion or a door event as the trigger, limit it to after sunset or evening hours, then turn on an entry or porch light. Google Home documents the example of turning on a porch light when motion is detected after sunset. Apple gives a related example in which lights turn on when the front door is unlocked in the evening. These are examples of the pattern, not promises that every platform offers the same triggers or actions. Google Home’s automation examples and Apple’s Matter page describe them.

Prevent unwanted repeat triggers

If the platform allows it, set the light to turn off after a suitable interval or when the entry is no longer occupied. Choose a timeout that gives someone time to arrive, unload, or find a switch; avoid making it so short that the light goes dark while the space is still in use.

2. Let occupancy control room lighting

Build a simple motion routine

Use a motion or occupancy event to turn on a room light when someone enters. Add a delay before switching it off, or use an “unoccupied” event if your sensor and platform expose one. Google documents motion as an automation trigger, and Amazon lists motion detectors among its supported Matter device categories. Google Home’s automation information and Amazon’s Matter device categories show the relevant capabilities at a general level.

Tune it to the room

A short timeout may suit a hallway; a room where people sit still may need a longer delay to avoid lights switching off unexpectedly. Preserve a manual control path, such as the wall switch or app control, so the automation does not become the only way to operate the light.

3. Shut down selected devices at bedtime

Choose a trigger and a small action list

Use a scheduled time or a manual command to turn off selected lights and compatible plugs, or set a supported device to a night mode. Keep the list short and review each action before saving it. Do not include devices that need to remain powered, such as equipment relied on overnight, merely because they are connected to a controllable plug.

Think of this as a scene or grouped set of actions, not a universal “turn everything off” switch. Which devices and actions are available depends on the platform and the particular accessories it recognizes. Apple documents grouped actions and automations in its Matter support information; Amazon lists smart plugs as a supported Matter category in its device category documentation.

5. Get an alert when a leak is detected

Start with a notification

Where your controller exposes leak-detector events, make the sensor trigger a phone or platform notification. Amazon documents water leak detectors as a Matter device type, but category support alone does not confirm that a particular sensor sends the event to your chosen controller or that the app can notify you as desired. Verify the exact device and automation options before relying on the alert. See Amazon’s supported Matter device categories.

Treat shutoff as a separate, verified setup

A compatible water valve might be an additional action only if you confirm that the exact valve, controller, and plumbing installation work together. A leak sensor does not, by itself, stop water or guarantee damage prevention. Do not make an unverified shutoff routine your only protection against leaks.

Build one routine, observe it, then refine

  1. Pick one trigger and one action. Start with a simple routine your platform clearly supports, such as motion turning on a light.
  2. Run it in ordinary conditions. Watch for missed triggers, repeated activations, or actions that happen at the wrong time.
  3. Add a condition or delay if needed. Restrict the routine by time, occupancy, or another available condition to reduce false triggers and unwanted actions.
  4. Keep an override. Make sure household members can still operate the device manually.
  5. Expand cautiously. Add more actions only after you understand what the existing routine does.

For secure devices such as locks, do not add casual unlock actions without checking the platform’s protections and the household safety implications. Home Assistant’s Google Assistant integration documentation says a PIN is required to open secure devices exposed through that integration; that safeguard is specific to the documented integration. Read Home Assistant’s Google Assistant integration documentation.
