Linux has credible routes to broader desktop use, especially through gaming and computers sold with Linux ready to use. But it is not on track to dominate based on current market-share evidence: Statcounter reported Linux at 4.54% of worldwide desktop-and-console web usage in September 2026, compared with Windows at 76.27%. Those figures are estimates of web usage, not a census of installed computers or a forecast. The case for Linux is best understood as five reasons it could gain ground—not proof that it will overtake its rivals.
1. Linux already has a measurable foothold
A platform does not need to be dominant to have a base from which it can grow. In Statcounter Global Stats’ September 2026 worldwide desktop-and-console table, Linux accounted for 4.54% of reported usage, while Windows accounted for 76.27%. Statcounter’s figures are based on web usage; they should not be read as a direct count of computers, and a single month does not establish a growth trend.
The figure does show that Linux is a real, visible part of desktop computing—not merely an operating system for servers or hobby projects. That foothold gives software makers and hardware vendors a reason to consider Linux users, though it does not guarantee that they will do so.

The Steam Deck is a finished gaming device associated with Valve’s Linux-based gaming ecosystem. It introduces people to Linux through a product they can use for a specific purpose, rather than asking each buyer to choose a distribution, install an operating system and configure a PC from scratch. That makes gaming a particularly visible entry point for users who might not otherwise try Linux.

Valve’s monthly Steam Hardware & Software Survey gathers information from Steam customers and says participation is “optional, and anonymous.” It can help show what is present in the Steam audience, but it is not a representative survey of all computer users. Valve’s August 2026 Linux-only version breakdown included SteamOS Holo; that listing shows Linux distributions within the surveyed Linux group, not Linux’s share of all Steam users. The available figures also do not establish how many Steam Deck owners go on to adopt Linux on a desktop computer.
3. Proton can make some Windows games playable on Linux
For many PC gamers, leaving Windows has meant risking access to games they already own. Valve’s Proton provides a route for running some Windows games through Steam Play on Linux. ValveSoftware describes Proton as a “Compatibility tool for Steam Play based on Wine and additional components” in its official Proton repository.

That support can reduce a major obstacle, but it is not a guarantee that every game will work well—or work at all. Compatibility varies by game, and multiplayer anti-cheat systems are not universally supported on Linux. Anyone considering a switch should check the specific games and features they rely on rather than assuming a Steam library will transfer intact.

4. Buyers can choose computers made for Linux
Linux is easier to try when the computer is designed and sold with it in mind. Specialist vendors offer laptops intended to run Linux, giving buyers an alternative to purchasing a Windows computer and installing another operating system themselves. System76’s laptop catalog is one example of this category.

- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
A purpose-built Linux computer can make setup and hardware selection more straightforward for a buyer who wants that platform. One vendor’s catalog, however, does not establish how widely such computers are available, how strong consumer demand is, or whether preinstalled Linux will become a mainstream buying option.

Linux comes in many distributions, allowing users and organizations to choose how the system is packaged and configured. Supporters value that flexibility and the fact that desktop Linux is not controlled by a single operating-system vendor. Developers can also work with an ecosystem in which many core components are open source.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Choice is a potential draw, not an automatic advantage for every user. Different distributions can mean different interfaces, update policies and support expectations; open-source software by itself does not guarantee an easier experience, stronger security or better application compatibility. The evidence available here does not quantify how much this flexibility will influence future desktop adoption.

What would have to change for Linux to dominate?
These reasons point to plausible sources of momentum, not a settled forecast. Linux could gain users if gaming compatibility continues to meet more players’ needs, suitable computers become easier to find, and the applications and peripherals people depend on work reliably. Whether that is enough to challenge Windows’ large current lead remains uncertain.
For an individual choosing a computer today, the practical test is whether Linux supports the work, games, hardware and level of configuration they need. The current evidence supports saying Linux has ways to reach more desktop users; it does not support saying that dominance is inevitable.
