A modern flip phone is a full-size smartphone that folds in half. It can be worth switching if you want a smaller phone to carry, useful actions on an outer screen, or a hinge that lets the phone stand for photos and calls. Those conveniences come with trade-offs: cover-screen app support varies, and battery, durability, repair options, price, and software support depend on the exact model and region.
1. It takes up less room when folded
A clamshell flip phone folds vertically, making the device shorter in a pocket or small bag. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7, for example, measures 85.5 × 75.2 × 13.7 mm folded and weighs 188 g; unfolded, it measures 166.7 × 75.2 × 6.5 mm. The folded phone is shorter, but thicker. 2. You can handle quick tasks on the cover screen
The outer display can make a notification check or brief action possible without opening the phone. Samsung describes using the Galaxy Z Flip7’s 4.1-inch FlexWindow to check a schedule, type quick messages, and take selfies. Motorola’s razr user guide documents an option to continue supported apps on the external display after closing the phone. 3. It still opens into a large smartphone screen
“Flip phone” can suggest an old-style feature phone with a small display, but a modern clamshell foldable is a smartphone that opens into a large screen. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Flip7’s main display at 6.9 inches. The fold changes how the phone carries and can be used; it does not make the unfolded screen small. 4. The hinge can help position the camera
With the phone partly open, its lower half can act as a stand while the camera points toward a subject. Samsung describes using FlexCam in FlexMode with a cover-screen preview for hands-free photos or video. That can be handy for a timer shot, a group picture, or a fixed-angle video call. 5. Folding it shut can make some interactions more deliberate
A cover screen can support a short check without bringing the main display into use, while closing the phone can end the open-screen interaction. That may suit someone who prefers a compact check-in to opening a large display for every notification. It is a design possibility, not a demonstrated digital-wellbeing result: there is no independent evidence here that switching to a flip phone reduces screen time or improves attention.

What to weigh before switching
Durability and care
Samsung lists an IP48 rating for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and describes its materials and hinge. Treat that as a specification for this model, not proof of protection from every kind of dust, drops, scratches, or long-term hinge wear. Before buying, read the exact device’s care instructions and warranty, and check whether authorized repairs are available where you live. Battery claims are not directly comparable
Samsung lists a 4,300 mAh typical battery for the 2025 Galaxy Z Flip7 and estimates up to 31 hours of video playback under its test conditions. Motorola lists a 4,800 mAh battery for its 2026 razr and advertises over 36 hours of battery life, based on controlled testing described by the manufacturer. These figures use different manufacturer claims and do not establish which phone lasts longer in everyday use; network, settings, apps, and test methods affect runtime. Updates, price, and local availability vary
Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy Z Flip7 specification sheet lists seven years of OS and security updates. Verify the commitment for the exact model and region rather than assuming all flip phones receive the same support. Motorola’s April 29, 2026 U.S. announcement named Amazon.com, Best Buy, and Motorola.com as sales channels for its razr family; it said razr ultra preorders would open May 14, with universal unlocked sale on May 21. For a concrete example, Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy Z Flip7 specifications and Motorola’s 2026 razr product claims describe different models and should not be treated as a direct comparison of real-world performance.
