Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo get useful changes from an AI coding agent, give it a bounded goal, point it to the right parts of your repository, agree on an approach before broad edits, and verify the result yourself. These practices apply across coding-agent tools; the title’s reference to “top GitHub trending agents” does not identify a verifiable ranking or particular repositories, so this guide does not present the tips as findings from specific trending projects.
What makes a coding agent different from autocomplete?
Autocomplete suggests code as you type. A coding agent can take on a larger task, use tools such as a terminal, and work across multiple files. That wider scope can help with repository-level changes, but it also means your instructions and review matter: Cursor’s official documentation describes the user as setting the goal and reviewing the output. It also notes that results depend partly on the model, harness, and context provided.
1. State the goal, constraints, and success criteria
Describe the change in plain language, then state boundaries the agent should respect. “Fix the login bug” leaves open what behavior is broken, which files are in scope, and how to tell whether the fix worked. A stronger task says what users see, what should happen instead, and what must not change.
- Goal: the behavior or result you want.
- Constraints: relevant limits, such as preserving the public API or avoiding unrelated refactors.
- Success criteria: observable conditions, such as a test passing or a specific error no longer appearing.
Cursor’s workflow guidance likewise recommends describing the goal and constraints. Clear boundaries make it easier to spot when an agent has drifted into unnecessary work.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Ground the request in your repository
Give the agent repository-specific context rather than relying on a generic description. Name the relevant files or modules, point to a similar implementation, and identify the project conventions it should follow. For example: “Update the validation in src/forms/signup and follow the error-handling pattern used by the password-reset form.”
Cursor recommends grounding prompts in real files and patterns. This helps the agent make a change that fits the codebase instead of inventing a parallel approach. Keep the scope focused: identifying likely locations is useful; asking for a broad rewrite when one component is involved is not.

3. Ask for an approach before larger edits
For a change spanning multiple files, affecting an interface, or carrying a meaningful risk of regressions, ask the agent to outline its plan before it edits. Review whether the proposed files, steps, and assumptions match your goal; correct them before work begins. Cursor recommends reviewing the approach first for larger tasks through Plan mode.
This is a practical checkpoint, not a guarantee. A sensible plan can still lead to flawed code, and a small, easily checked edit may not need a separate planning step. Match the amount of upfront review to the scope and consequences of the change.

4. Require checks, then inspect the changes
Ask the agent to run the project’s relevant tests, linters, or build commands and report what happened. Then inspect the output and the changed files yourself; for a pull request, review the diff as well. Agents can run commands and check results, and GitHub documents code-review and agentic workflows, but those capabilities do not establish that every generated change is correct.
- Check that the reported commands are appropriate for this repository and that they completed successfully.
- Read the diff for unrelated edits, missing edge cases, and changes that do not match the requested behavior.
- When a check fails, determine whether the failure is caused by the change or is an existing project issue before accepting the result.
5. Match the workflow to the task—and account for cost
Use a small, reviewable request when the change is narrow and easy to verify. For broad or consequential work, ask for a plan and apply closer human oversight. A published 2026 study by Giovanni Pinna, Jingzhi Gong, David Williams, and Federica Sarro analyzed 7,156 pull requests and found acceptance differed by task category: documentation tasks had an 82.1% acceptance rate, compared with 66.1% for new features. The authors report that no tested agent led every category. These figures describe that study’s dataset and method, not a prediction for a particular project or a guarantee about future results.

Cost is another part of choosing a workflow. GitHub’s documentation states: “Coding agents consume GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits.” GitHub says credit use is based on model and token usage, so the cost of a session can vary. Check the current billing details for the agent and plan you use before running large or repeated tasks.
