Five good candidates are browser-status tracking, repeated form inputs, external connections, data loading, and focused side effects such as impression logging. They are examples—not a reason to wrap every small duplicate. React’s guide puts the key distinction plainly: “Custom Hooks let you share stateful logic but not state itself.”
What makes a behavior a good candidate for a custom Hook?
A custom Hook is a function whose name begins with use followed by a capital letter. It can call other Hooks and return any value. Its purpose is to let components reuse stateful logic or conceal implementation details behind an interface that describes what the component needs.
Start by implementing the behavior with React’s built-in APIs in the component. Extract it when it has a meaningful boundary and name, and when reuse or complexity reduction makes the component easier to understand. Compare the two choices this way:
| Keep behavior in the component | Extract a custom Hook |
|---|---|
| The behavior is small, local, and clearer beside the UI that uses it. | The same stateful behavior appears in multiple components, or its details obscure the component’s purpose. |
| A wrapper would have a vague name or merely hide a lifecycle event. | A purpose-specific name communicates what the component needs, such as useChatRoom. |
| No useful boundary exists between the UI and behavior. | The Hook provides a useful boundary while preserving the behavior’s real inputs, updates, and cleanup. |
React recommends that Hooks remain pure like component code. Call Hooks only at the top level of a function component or another Hook—not conditionally, in loops, or from ordinary functions. A custom Hook packages logic; it does not bypass the Rules of Hooks.

1. Track browser status in more than one component
A status display and a save button might both need to know whether the browser is online. Without an abstraction, each component can subscribe to the browser’s online/offline events and remove its listeners when no longer needed. A focused useOnlineStatus Hook can put that subscription and cleanup in one place, leaving each component to express how it uses the status.
Each call to the Hook still has its own state instance. The shared part is the subscription logic—not a shared online-status value managed by the Hook. If components must use the same state instance, lift that state to a common parent and pass it to them.

2. Give repeated form fields a consistent interface
Several text inputs may need the same value-and-change-handler behavior. A useFormInput Hook can return a field’s value, its change handler, or ready-to-spread input props. That lets the form focus on which fields it renders rather than repeating the same wiring for each one.
Calling the Hook for a first name and a last name creates two independent values, not one shared form value. This is useful when fields have similar behavior but distinct contents; if the form needs centralized values or validation, design that state boundary deliberately rather than expecting the Hook calls to synchronize themselves.

3. Manage a connection to an external system
A chat room connection has a concrete lifecycle: connect using the relevant room options, receive or handle messages, and disconnect when the connection should end. A useChatRoom(options) Hook can package those details behind a name that tells its caller what the component is doing.
Connections are an appropriate use for an Effect because they synchronize React with a system outside React. The Effect’s dependencies must reflect the values that determine the connection, and its cleanup must release the connection when those values change or the component is removed. See React’s Effect guidance for the synchronization model.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
React’s current custom-Hook example uses useEffectEvent for a callback. Check the documentation for the React version your project supports before adopting that API; the broader lesson is to use a purpose-specific Hook without obscuring how callbacks and connection lifecycles stay synchronized.
4. Reuse a focused data-loading pattern
If multiple components repeat the same loading behavior, a Hook such as useData(url) can provide a useful interface for the request input and its result, loading, and error states. It can keep request mechanics from dominating the component that displays the result.

Data loading is not one universal recipe. A reusable implementation still needs a deliberate policy for cancellation or stale responses when inputs change, as well as the states and errors its callers need. Extract the pattern your application actually shares; a generic fetch Hook is not automatically the right architecture for every app.
5. Keep a focused side behavior declarative
Impression or event logging can be meaningful behavior even when it is not central to rendering a component. A Hook such as useImpressionLog(eventName, extraData) can make the intent visible at the call site while keeping the logging details together.
Do not create a generic useMount wrapper just to hide an Effect. First use React’s API directly; extract only when a concrete behavior has a useful name and boundary. Effects are for synchronization with external systems when React has no better built-in solution, not a general-purpose place to move arbitrary code. React discusses that boundary in its custom Hook guide and Effect reference.
Do custom Hooks share state?
No. Custom Hooks share stateful logic, but each call runs independently and owns its own Hook state. For example, two calls to useFormInput produce two separate field values. When two components need the same state, lift it to their common owner and pass the value and update mechanism down rather than assuming separate Hook calls are connected.
