If you want to check PC temperatures, clocks, fan speeds, or component details, the best tool depends on what you need to see. HWiNFO offers the broadest documented system visibility in this shortlist; HWMonitor presents health-sensor readings; MSI Afterburner adds GPU controls and an in-game overlay; OpenHardwareMonitor provides a Windows sensor tree and logging; and CPU-Z helps identify hardware. These are feature-based picks, not a hands-on ranking.

How to choose a PC hardware monitor

Here, “PC hardware monitor” means software that reads component sensors or reports hardware information—not a physical display. Start with the job you need to do:

  • See temperatures, usage, and other readings across many components: choose a broad sensor tool such as HWiNFO.
  • Check common health readings without needing tuning controls: consider HWMonitor.
  • Watch GPU behavior while gaming or adjust GPU settings: consider MSI Afterburner.
  • Inspect a Windows sensor hierarchy or save readings to a log: consider OpenHardwareMonitor.
  • Identify the CPU, motherboard, memory, or their specifications: use CPU-Z as a companion utility.

Sensor availability depends on the hardware and the utility’s access to it. A missing reading does not by itself show that a component is faulty, and a monitoring utility cannot diagnose every PC problem.

Best PC hardware monitoring tools

1. HWiNFO: best for broad system visibility

HWiNFO is the broadest documented option in this shortlist for users who want more than a CPU or GPU temperature. Its feature overview lists real-time monitoring for CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, drives, and peripherals, alongside detailed hardware information. HWiNFO’s official feature overview also describes reports in XML, CSV, and HTML, sensor tables and graphs, tray icons, an on-screen display (OSD), configurable alerts, and integrations with other applications.

  • Flexible Mounting Options: Versatile mounting bracket that supports height and tilt adjustments. Mount it securely to fan frames, attach it to case panels, or use adhesive pads for flat surfaces, ensuring optimal visibility from any angle.
  • Stunning Diffused ARGB Lighting: Enhance your build's aesthetics with a built-in diffused ARGB lighting strip. Fully customizable through L-Connect 3, the lighting offers a spectrum of colors and effects, allowing synchronization with your entire system for a cohesive look.

The vendor lists x86, x64, and ARM64 support and Windows versions through Windows 11. These are vendor-described capabilities, not results from independent accuracy or coverage testing. Choose HWiNFO when you want multiple ways to inspect or report system data; its breadth may be more than you need for a quick temperature check.

2. HWMonitor: best for straightforward sensor readings

CPUID describes HWMonitor as a utility for reading PC health sensors, including temperatures, voltages, power, current, fan speeds, utilization, and clock speeds. It suits readers who primarily want to view those measurements rather than tune a GPU.

The inspected CPUID page listed HWMonitor 1.59, dated August 26, 2025. That dated entry should not be treated as confirmation of the newest release on a later publication date. TechRadar’s 2025 guide characterizes the utility as simple and lightweight and notes that it lacks advanced benchmarking; that is editorial context, not a universal performance measurement. 3. MSI Afterburner: best for GPU monitoring and tuning

MSI Afterburner’s official page describes real-time monitoring, an in-game OSD, GPU clock and voltage controls, and custom fan profiles. MSI says the free utility can be used with graphics cards from all brands, so it is an option even if your card is not made by MSI.

Afterburner is the fit when you want to watch GPU behavior during a game or adjust supported GPU settings. Monitoring and tuning are different uses: changing clocks, voltage, or fan profiles is not risk-free. MSI advises downloading Afterburner only from its official site or Guru3D because fake download sites have been reported.

4. OpenHardwareMonitor: best for a Windows sensor tree and logging

The OpenHardwareMonitor project repository describes a Windows sensor hierarchy covering supported motherboards, Intel and AMD CPUs, RAM, NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs, storage, network adapters, cooling devices, some USB-connected power supplies, and laptop batteries. Sensor entries can include current, minimum, and maximum readings; the project also documents configurable polling, text reports, and CSV logging.

The repository documents x86 and x64 Windows builds. Some readings require administrator privileges to access hardware registers. The project also explains that antivirus tools may flag the app because it uses a driver and scheduled task; that explanation does not guarantee how a particular antivirus product will handle it.

5. CPU-Z: best for identifying components

CPUID describes CPU-Z as freeware that reports processor name and number, motherboard and chipset, memory type, size, timings and module specifications, plus real-time core and memory frequency measurements. It is useful when you need to find out what is installed or check specifications.

CPU-Z is a hardware-information companion, not a full replacement for a sensor-focused monitor. CPUID lists Windows x86/x64, Windows ARM64, and Android on its product page.

What to keep in mind when reading sensor data

  • Check the sensor you actually need. A tool may report many readings, but the exact sensors shown depend on the system’s components and access to them.
  • Use the right kind of utility for the question. A sensor view helps you observe temperatures or fan speeds; a hardware-information tool helps identify components; tuning controls change settings rather than simply report them.
  • Treat readings as clues, not a diagnosis. One number alone cannot establish why a PC is overheating, unstable, or underperforming. Consider the symptom and system context before changing settings.
