Local AI tools do different jobs: some provide a ready-to-use desktop chat app, while others focus on document workflows, local APIs, portable model packaging, or speech recognition. These five open-source projects are worth considering if you want to run AI on your own computer or self-host it. None is a universal best choice, and “nobody talks about” is a subjective hook—not a measured claim about their popularity.

Which local AI tool should you start with?

Your priority Start with Why it fits
Desktop chat and local files GPT4All Desktop app with local document support and a Python SDK.
Document knowledge and productivity workflows AnythingLLM Combines document knowledge with workflows and other assistant features.
A desktop assistant that other apps can call Jan Offers local models and an OpenAI-compatible API at localhost:1337.
A self-hosted API for multiple model types LocalAI Provides API-compatible interfaces and multiple model backends.
Portable model distribution in one executable llamafile Packages model execution as a single file.
Local speech transcription whisper.cpp Focused on local inference with the Whisper speech-recognition model.

“Local” describes where inference runs, not a single kind of product. A desktop app, a local API server, and a portable executable can all run models on your own hardware, but they suit different workflows. The projects’ pages describe features rather than offering a controlled head-to-head performance comparison.

1. GPT4All: desktop chat and local documents

GPT4All is a straightforward starting point if you want a desktop application rather than an API setup. Nomic’s documentation says it runs LLMs privately on everyday desktops and laptops, and that no API calls or GPU are required to get started. Its LocalDocs feature brings information from local documents into chats.

GPT4All also offers a Python SDK using llama.cpp and Nomic’s C backend, making it relevant to both casual desktop use and Python projects. The documentation’s example includes a 4.66 GB model download; that is the size of the example model artifact, not a universal hardware requirement.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

“No GPU required to get started” does not mean every model or workload will run quickly on every computer. Check the requirements and expected performance for the particular model you want to use.

2. AnythingLLM: document knowledge and productivity workflows

AnythingLLM combines on-device chat with document knowledge, workflows, custom agent skills, and a meeting assistant that its homepage says can transcribe and summarize meetings locally. It advertises desktop downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux, as well as an Android app, and describes the project as MIT-licensed and open source.

The homepage also describes optional cloud models and web search. As a result, local use should not be mistaken for a blanket promise that every feature or setting stays offline. Check the options you enable if network use or data handling matters to your workflow.

AnythingLLM’s homepage displayed 66k+ GitHub stars when accessed in 2026. That is a dynamic count reported by the project, not a user count or a comparable measure of popularity across these tools.

3. Jan: a desktop assistant with a local API

Jan is an open-source desktop assistant that the project describes as an offline ChatGPT alternative. Its feature list includes downloading local models, creating custom assistants, and running an OpenAI-compatible local server at localhost:1337. That endpoint lets other applications connect to Jan as a local service.

Jan also supports connections to cloud model providers. Distinguish that optional connected use from running a local model offline, and review the provider and model settings relevant to your setup.

4. LocalAI: a self-hosted API for multiple model types

LocalAI is aimed more at developers and self-hosters than at people who simply want a polished desktop chat window. The project describes OpenAI-, Anthropic-, and ElevenLabs-compatible APIs across backends, with support for LLMs, vision, voice, image, and video. Its README lists CPU-only operation and support for NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, Apple Silicon, and Vulkan hardware.

The project’s documentation shows models being loaded from a gallery, Hugging Face, an Ollama registry, or configuration. That flexibility comes with more setup choices than a desktop chat app. Compatibility and behavior can vary across models and backends; the project’s broad support claims do not establish identical feature behavior for every combination.

5. llamafile: package model execution as one file

llamafile combines llama.cpp with Cosmopolitan Libc to package model execution as a single-file executable intended to run locally across many operating systems and CPU architectures, without a conventional installation. That makes it an interesting option for portable demos and distribution when you prefer a compact artifact to a model-serving stack.

The repository says versions starting with 0.10.0 use a new build system to stay aligned with newer llama.cpp, and that some familiar features may be missing. Older releases remain available, so check the documentation for the specific version you plan to use instead of assuming older instructions still apply.

The llamafile repository also includes whisperfile, a single-file speech-to-text tool built on whisper.cpp.

When to choose whisper.cpp instead

If speech recognition is your main goal, consider whisper.cpp in place of a general-purpose chat or inference tool. It is a C/C++ implementation for local inference with OpenAI’s Whisper automatic speech-recognition model. Its repository documents CPU-only use, acceleration options for several platforms, quantization, command-line transcription, streaming, and an HTTP server.

whisper.cpp is an inference project, not a speech-generation tool or a complete meeting application. Its narrower focus makes it a better fit when the task is local transcription rather than general assistant chat.

What to check before running models locally

  • Match the tool to the task. A desktop app, document workflow, local endpoint, self-hosted API, and single-file executable are different ways of using local AI.
  • Check the exact model and backend. Hardware support and performance depend on the project, model, backend, and workload. The available project descriptions do not establish a universal minimum memory, storage size, GPU, or computer configuration.
  • Review network-related options. Optional cloud providers, web search, and other connected features can change how a particular setup behaves. Verify the settings you plan to use rather than inferring that every feature is offline.
  • Do not assume new hardware is required. GPT4All says a GPU is not required to get started; LocalAI documents CPU-only and accelerated paths. Neither statement guarantees that a chosen model will run well on every machine.
