For a conventional Android app that stores relational data in SQLite, Room is the strongest default choice: Android’s documentation recommends it over direct SQLite APIs. SQLDelight is a better fit when your team wants to write SQL directly or share database code across platforms. ObjectBox and Realm use object-database models, while ORMLite is a documented SQLite alternative whose current maintenance should be checked before adoption. These tools are not all traditional ORMs, so the best choice depends on your data model, SQL preferences, platform targets, and support requirements.

How to choose among Android persistence libraries

“Android ORM” is often used loosely to mean a library that stores and retrieves app data. The five options here do not all map objects to relational tables in the same way. Room and ORMLite work with SQLite; SQLDelight starts with SQL and generates typed APIs; ObjectBox and Realm use object-database models.

Compare them by asking what kind of data model your app needs, how much SQL control your team wants, what build-time checks and migration workflow are available, which platforms must share the code, and whether the project can rely on the library’s current support horizon. For performance-sensitive work, benchmark your actual workload rather than selecting a library by a general speed claim.

1. Room: the default for SQLite-oriented Android apps

Room is an AndroidX abstraction layer over SQLite. Android’s official guidance recommends using Room instead of working directly with SQLite APIs; its stated benefits include compile-time query verification, less repetitive boilerplate, and streamlined migrations. That makes it a practical starting point for Android teams that want relational storage and SQLite capabilities without handling all the database plumbing themselves. Android’s Room guide

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

Room has distinct 2.x and 3.x lines. On September 9, 2026, AndroidX release notes listed Room 2.8.5 as stable. Room’s 3.0 release notes listed 3.0.3 and an alpha 3.1.0 on that date. Room 3.0 is a breaking line: it has new artifact and package names, uses SQLiteDriver APIs, drops SupportSQLite APIs, and generates Kotlin only. Room 2.x release notes Room 3.x release notes

Room 3.0’s focus is Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP). In a March 13, 2026 Android Developers Blog announcement, Software Engineer Daniel Santiago Rivera wrote: “Room 3.0 is a major breaking version of the library that focuses on Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) and adds support for JavaScript and WebAssembly (WASM) on top of the existing Android, iOS and JVM desktop support.” Check your target major version before applying dependencies, package names, or examples from a guide. • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

2. SQLDelight: SQL-first storage with generated types

SQLDelight is a fit for teams that want to author and inspect SQL rather than describe queries primarily through an annotation-based ORM. It generates type-safe Kotlin APIs from SQL statements and verifies schemas, statements, and migrations at compile time. Its documented targets include Android and other platforms, making it worth considering when database code needs to be shared. SQLDelight documentation

The Android getting-started guide documents SQLDelight 2.4.0 and says its Gradle plugin selects an SQLite dialect based on the project’s minSdkVersion. Current release notes say the Android driver minimum SDK was raised to API 23, so verify the driver’s requirements against your app’s minimum supported Android version. SQLDelight releases

3. ObjectBox: an object-database alternative

ObjectBox is a different model from SQLite-based libraries: it is an on-device object database for Java and Kotlin Android apps. ObjectBox describes its database as designed for edge computing and offline-first experiences, and its broader documentation presents an on-device object and vector database across platforms. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent comparative findings. ObjectBox Android documentation ObjectBox documentation

Consider it when an object-oriented database model better suits the app than relational SQLite and SQL. Do not infer a universal speed advantage from the product’s positioning; validate behavior on your own data and devices.

4. ORMLite: a SQLite option to evaluate cautiously

ORMLite’s Android manual documents integration with Android database APIs, noting that the described Android setup does not officially support JDBC. It directs Android users to the Android artifact rather than the JDBC variant and documents creating a helper subclass of OrmLiteSqliteOpenHelper. ORMLite Android manual

The manual is dated December 20, 2021. It establishes how the documented integration works, but does not establish today’s release cadence or support quality. Treat ORMLite as a possible legacy-compatible alternative, and confirm its current version, maintenance, and fit before choosing it for a new app.

5. Realm: separate local database use from sync decisions

Realm’s Kotlin repository says MongoDB announced the deprecation of Atlas Device Sync and Realm SDKs in September 2024. That statement should not be read as proof that every local Realm database capability ended; it does mean a new project should not assume Atlas Device Sync is a supported new-project path. Realm Kotlin repository

Realm may still be relevant when an existing codebase is built around its object model. For a new app, verify the support terms and lifecycle for the exact Realm SDK and platform you plan to use rather than treating the database, SDK, and sync service as one status question.

Comparison at a glance

Option Data model and SQL approach Build-time checks and migrations Platform and support considerations
Room SQLite abstraction; relational data and SQLite capabilities. Compile-time query verification; Android documentation cites streamlined migrations. Room 2.8.5 was listed as stable on September 9, 2026. Room 3.0.3 and alpha 3.1.0 were listed the same day; 3.0 is a breaking Kotlin-only generation line with KMP targets.
SQLDelight SQL-first; generates typed Kotlin APIs from authored SQL. Verifies schemas, statements, and migrations at compile time. Documentation covers Android and other targets. Release notes say the Android driver minimum SDK is API 23; check this against the app’s minSdkVersion.
ObjectBox Object database rather than relational SQLite. Offline-first and edge-computing positioning is described by ObjectBox. not stated in the cited Android documentation. Vendor documentation describes cross-platform on-device object and vector database use; verify platform and support details for the project.
ORMLite SQLite integration using Android database APIs; Android manual recommends the Android artifact, not JDBC. not stated in the cited Android manual. Android manual dated December 20, 2021; current release cadence and support quality are not established by that manual.
Realm Object-database model; distinguish local database use from sync services. not stated in the cited repository excerpt. Repository reports September 2024 announcement of Atlas Device Sync and Realm SDK deprecation; it does not settle lifecycle for every local component. Verify exact SDK, platform, and terms.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Room for a conventional Android app using relational SQLite, unless a specific platform-sharing or SQL-authoring requirement points elsewhere.
  • Choose SQLDelight if the team wants SQL to remain explicit, values generated typed APIs and compile-time checks, or needs shared database code across platforms.
  • Evaluate ObjectBox if an object database is the intended data model and its platform and support details meet the project’s needs.
  • Keep ORMLite on the shortlist mainly when compatibility with an existing app matters, after checking current maintenance and project fit.
  • Use Realm only with component-specific clarity: identify whether the app depends on local database functionality, an SDK, or Atlas Device Sync, and verify current support for each.

Why there is no universal fastest Android ORM

A historical community benchmark tested on a Samsung S7 and noted that clean SQLite with custom caching may be best when performance is critical. That device-specific result does not establish a present-day ranking. No current independent, apples-to-apples benchmark of these five options was established. Historical community benchmark

If speed is a deciding factor, compare the candidates with the same target devices, dataset, query mix, schema, caching policy, and library versions. Measure the read and write operations your app actually performs; a different workload can change the result.
