Recommended Free Tools
Linux offers several ways to work with Excel files from a terminal, but the tools do different jobs. csvkit and xlsx2csv can turn workbook data into CSV for shell workflows; Excelkit is documented as a command-line tool for Excel files; openpyxl is a Python library for scripted workbook reading and writing; and xls2xlsx converts legacy XLS files to XLSX. Choose based on whether you need to inspect or transform data, or keep working with an Excel workbook.
Which tool fits the job?
| Tool | Documented role | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| csvkit | Terminal utilities for converting and working with tabular data, including Excel-to-CSV conversion | Converting workbook data, selecting columns, inspecting CSV, and querying tabular data | Its spreadsheet conversion produces CSV; CSV is not an Excel workbook. See the csvkit documentation and tutorial. |
| xlsx2csv | Focused XLSX-to-CSV converter | Extracting data from an XLSX workbook, including a chosen sheet, for downstream shell processing | Converts data to CSV rather than editing and preserving the source workbook. See the Debian testing manual. |
| Excelkit | Command-line tool for operating on Excel files, based on openpyxl | Investigating a CLI approach to Excel-file operations | The available documentation does not establish its detailed commands or supported formats. Check its project documentation for current details. |
| openpyxl | Python library for reading and writing Excel 2010 OOXML formats, including XLSX and XLSM | Writing Python scripts that read or modify workbooks from a terminal workflow | It is a library, not an interactive spreadsheet CLI. See the openpyxl documentation. |
| xls2xlsx | Command-line conversion from legacy XLS to XLSX | Converting an XLS file to XLSX | Its documentation does not establish conversion fidelity, Linux installation steps, or whether formatting is preserved. See the project documentation. |
1. csvkit: convert, inspect, and query tabular data
csvkit is a collection of command-line tools for working with tabular data. Its in2csv utility converts Excel .xls and .xlsx files to CSV, which you can send to the terminal or redirect to a file. The suite also includes csvcut for selecting columns, csvlook for inspecting data in a readable table, and csvsql for SQL-style queries.
For example, the basic conversion pattern is:
in2csv workbook.xlsx
To save the CSV instead of printing it in the terminal:
in2csv workbook.xlsx > workbook.csv
Once converted, you can use csvkit’s utilities to examine or query the tabular output. The csvkit documentation describes the suite and its Excel conversion workflow.

Know what conversion changes
CSV is a text representation of tabular data, not a full Excel workbook. The conversion route is useful when the next step is shell-based filtering, inspection, or analysis, but it does not mean workbook features are being edited and saved in place.
Account for inference and scale
csvkit’s documentation cautions that CSV sniffing and type inference can occasionally be wrong. If automatic detection causes problems, its tools allow those features to be disabled. For very large files or more complex analysis, the documentation suggests considering SQL or alternatives rather than assuming a command-line conversion suite is the best fit. See the csvkit documentation for details.

2. xlsx2csv: extract XLSX data as CSV
xlsx2csv is a focused converter for XLSX workbook data. The Debian testing manual documents options to read input from standard input, choose a sheet, set delimiters and date formats, and convert files recursively. These options make it useful when the goal is to feed workbook data into other terminal tools rather than to preserve an editable Excel workbook.
Because options and packaging can vary, consult the manual for the version available in your environment before building a workflow around specific flags.

3. Excelkit: an Excel-file CLI with limited documented detail
Excelkit’s project documentation describes it as a command-line tool for operating on Excel files and says it is based on openpyxl. The available documentation does not establish a reliable list of commands or supported file formats, so it is not possible to compare its detailed editing capabilities with the other tools here. Check the Excelkit documentation for current installation and feature information before adopting it.
4. openpyxl: read and write workbooks in Python scripts
openpyxl reads and writes Excel 2010 OOXML files, including .xlsx and .xlsm. It is not a standalone interactive terminal program: you use it inside Python code, and run that script from the terminal. That makes it the suitable option among these five when you need scripted workbook operations rather than a CSV export.

Consider XML security for untrusted files
The project documentation warns that protection against quadratic blowup and billion-laughs XML attacks is not enabled by default. For workflows that process files you do not trust, openpyxl recommends installing defusedxml. See the security guidance in the project documentation.
5. xls2xlsx: convert legacy XLS to XLSX
xls2xlsx documents a command-line path for converting older .xls files to .xlsx. That can be relevant when a later step requires the newer file extension, but the available project documentation does not establish how faithfully workbook contents or formatting are preserved, nor does it establish Linux installation steps. Check the project documentation and validate the converted file for your needs.

How to choose
- You need CSV for shell processing: Start with csvkit for a broader set of conversion and tabular-data utilities, or xlsx2csv for a focused XLSX-to-CSV conversion.
- You need to select or inspect columns after conversion: csvkit documents
csvcut, csvlook, andcsvsqlfor those tabular-data tasks. - You need scripted workbook reading or writing: Use openpyxl from Python, while accounting for its documented XML security recommendation when processing untrusted files.
- You want a dedicated Excel-file CLI: Excelkit is described as one, but verify its current commands and formats in its documentation.
- You need to move from XLS to XLSX: xls2xlsx documents that conversion direction; confirm output suitability rather than assuming fidelity.
Installation instructions and distro package availability are not established consistently for all five tools. Check the relevant project documentation or your distribution’s package information for current commands and versions. The csvkit documentation identifies version 2.2.0, the Debian xlsx2csv manual is for testing, and the openpyxl documentation page identifies version 3.1.3 with a generation date of May 29, 2024; those details can change.
