There isn’t a well-supported universal list of six must-have iPad apps for system administrators. The practical choices depend on what you need to do: connect to servers over SSH, open a Windows or Mac desktop, or inspect a network. These five apps cover those distinct jobs, with important differences in host setup, vendor requirements, and paid features.

Choose by the job you need to do

App Best fit Key dependency or consideration
Termius SSH, Mosh, Telnet, port forwarding, and SFTP Some capabilities are plan-dependent; check the current listing.
Blink Shell Keyboard-oriented terminal sessions and command-line tools External keyboard support is documented; its displayed price and trial can change.
Windows App Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, Dev Box, and remote PCs Your organization must provide the service, access, and credentials.
Jump Desktop Remote access to Mac or Windows computers Its install guide specifies iOS/iPadOS 16 or later; confirm current requirements.
WiFiman Device discovery and network diagnostics Some metrics and remote-access features require UniFi equipment.

For SSH, Mosh, and file transfer

Termius

Termius is a general-purpose choice for connecting to servers and network devices from an iPad. Its US App Store listing describes SSH, Mosh, Telnet, port forwarding, and SFTP in the Starter plan. It also describes Pro features such as an encrypted cloud vault and synchronization across devices. Those are the listing’s descriptions, not an independent security assessment. Check the current US App Store listing to confirm which features are included in the plan you intend to use.

Blink Shell

Blink is aimed at terminal work and documents SSH, Mosh, command-line tools, PKI and agent support, SFTP, Files app integration, device sync, and external-keyboard support. Its official page has displayed a two-week trial followed by $19.99 per year; pricing and offers can change, so verify the live terms on Blink’s product page. An external Bluetooth keyboard compatible with your iPad can make terminal input more practical, but no particular keyboard model is established here.

Choose between these tools based on the protocols you need, how you manage keys and hosts, whether you want synchronization, and the current plan boundaries—not on unverified claims about speed or reliability.

For Windows desktops and hosted workspaces

Windows App

Microsoft lists Windows App for iOS and iPadOS access to Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and remote PCs. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services guidance recommends Windows App where possible because it replaces the Remote Desktop client. Availability is not automatic: your organization’s configuration, enrollment, network access, and credentials determine what you can open. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services client guidance and confirm setup with your administrator.

For remote access to Mac or Windows computers

Jump Desktop

Jump Desktop’s documentation describes an iPad client for remotely accessing Mac or Windows machines. Its installation guide specifies iOS/iPadOS 16 or later. Check the installation guide and current device-installation support article for up-to-date requirements and connection steps. The documentation establishes it as another remote-control option, not as a better-performing alternative to Windows App.

For network discovery and diagnostics

WiFiman

Ubiquiti describes WiFiman Mobile as offering device discovery, speed tests, and network information including signal, throughput, latency, and roaming metrics in supported setups. Its documentation ties certain metrics to a network managed by a UniFi Cloud Gateway and says Teleport remote access requires a UniFi Gateway. Floorplan mapping is described for LiDAR-equipped mobile devices. Check Ubiquiti’s WiFiman documentation for the relevant equipment and device conditions. WiFiman is a diagnostic aid for supported networks, not a general substitute for an enterprise network-management platform.

When an iPad is a good admin companion

An iPad is most useful when you can reach the systems you manage and have configured the necessary accounts, keys, gateways, or remote-access services. For command-line work, decide whether a keyboard and Files integration matter to your workflow. For graphical administration, confirm the target machine or hosted desktop is enabled for your account. For network troubleshooting, check whether your environment uses the UniFi equipment required for the WiFiman features you want.
