Choose each for the role its content plays—not for how you want it to look. These are a practical beginner set, not an official ranking or a rule that every page must use all five.
What semantic HTML tags do
Semantic elements describe the purpose and relationships of page content. For example, <nav> identifies a navigation section, while <main> identifies the page’s dominant content. CSS controls presentation—such as layout, color and typography—so you can change how an element looks without changing what it means.
A <div> is still appropriate when you need a wrapper and no more specific element fits. Semantic HTML is about choosing a meaningful element when one describes the content, not avoiding generic elements at all costs.
Five useful semantic elements for beginners
<header>: introductory content
A <header> contains introductory material for the page or for a section of it. It might include a heading, logo or navigational aids. It is not always one strip at the very top of the page: an article or section can have its own header.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
<nav>: a meaningful group of navigation links
Use <nav> for a section whose purpose is to provide navigation to the current document or other documents. A site’s primary links and a table of contents are common examples. A single unrelated link does not necessarily need its own navigation section.
<main>: the page’s dominant content
Place the content that is central to the page’s topic or functionality in <main>. For a guide, that is the guide’s unique central content—not repeated site navigation or other material that surrounds it.

<article>: a self-contained composition
An <article> represents content that makes sense as an independent composition and could be distributed or reused on its own. A blog post or forum entry fits this pattern. It is not simply another name for any box or group of content.
<footer>: information about its surrounding section
A <footer> contains information about its nearest sectioning ancestor or the page as a whole. Depending on where it appears, it may contain author details, copyright information or related links. Like <header>, it can belong to a section or article rather than only to the entire page.

How the elements can fit together
This example uses all five elements in one common arrangement. It is illustrative, not a required structure for every page:
<header>
<h1>Site name</h1>
</header>
<nav aria-label="Primary">
<a href="/">Home</a>
<a href="/guides">Guides</a>
</nav>
<main>
<article>
<h2>Page topic</h2>
<p>Main page content goes here.</p>
</article>
</main>
<footer>
<p>Contact and copyright information</p>
</footer>
If a page has more than one navigation landmark, give each a distinct accessible name, such as “Primary” and “On this page.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When to use <section>, <aside> or <div>
<section>: Use it for a standalone thematic grouping when no more specific element describes the content. Sections should generally have a heading.<article>: Prefer it when the composition can stand on its own or be reused independently.<aside>: Use it for content indirectly related to the main content, such as a contextual sidebar. A site-wide element does not become an aside just because CSS places it in a visual sidebar.<div>: Use it when a generic wrapper is useful and no semantic element fits the content’s purpose.
How semantic elements relate to accessibility
Semantic elements can expose page regions as landmarks to assistive technologies, helping users move to areas such as the main content or navigation without traversing every preceding link. The exact landmarks depend on context and accessible naming. For example, a <section> becomes a landmark when it has an accessible name, and whether a header or footer creates a banner or contentinfo landmark depends on its context.
Using semantic tags alone does not make a site accessible or prove WCAG conformance. Headings, names, content and the rest of the implementation still matter. W3C WAI describes H101 as an example technique and states: “Techniques are examples of ways to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). They are not required to meet the normative requirements of WCAG.” Read the W3C WAI H101 technique.
