OnEnable() and OnDisable() track a component’s active-and-enabled state; they are not one-time setup and final-cleanup callbacks. Treating them as repeatable state transitions helps prevent duplicate event handlers, fragile initialization order, and teardown that breaks when an object is re-enabled.
What these callbacks mean
Unity calls OnEnable() when an active component becomes enabled. It can run again whenever the component returns to an active-and-enabled state. OnDisable() runs when that state ends, but ending the state does not necessarily mean the object is being permanently destroyed.
For a component entering Play Mode, Unity’s Unity 6.0.7 reference says OnEnable() is called after that component’s Awake() and before its Start(). This guarantee is for the same object, not a global ordering across objects. Unity’s OnEnable reference documents the callback’s activation scenarios.
1. Treating OnEnable as a one-time initializer
OnEnable() can run on initial activation and again after later disable-and-enable cycles. Putting work there that must happen only once—such as allocating a persistent resource or resetting state that should survive deactivation—can repeat it unexpectedly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the callback by the work’s lifetime
- One-time setup: Put initialization that should happen once in an appropriate one-time path, commonly
Awake()orStart(), based on when the required data is available. - Per-activation setup: Use
OnEnable()for work that should be established whenever the component becomes active, such as registering for notifications it should receive only while active.
Consider whether the component may be inactive when Play Mode begins and whether setup depends on data that is not ready until Start(). The right placement depends on those lifecycle requirements, not on a blanket rule that all initialization belongs in one callback.
2. Assuming another GameObject’s Awake runs first
Unity guarantees the Awake()-before-OnEnable() sequence on the same object when entering Play Mode. It does not guarantee that one GameObject’s Awake() runs before another GameObject’s OnEnable(). The Manual cautions that event-function order across different GameObjects is not deterministic unless explicitly documented or configured. Unity’s execution-order Manual also notes that runtime instantiation does not inherit every ordering statement for scene loading.

Make dependencies explicit
- Use serialized references where an object needs a known dependency.
- Use an explicit initialization or coordination step when another system must be ready first.
- Avoid assuming that callback names or the order seen in one run establish a global sequence.
3. Subscribing without reliably unsubscribing
Custom event systems do not automatically pair subscriptions with Unity’s active state. If a listener stays registered after it becomes inactive, its publisher may still invoke it. When notifications are only needed while active, subscribe in OnEnable() and remove the same handler from the same publisher in OnDisable().
Check the pairing across repeated cycles
- Confirm both callbacks use the same event source and delegate.
- Ensure each activation adds only the intended registration and each deactivation removes it.
- Test the logic mentally across enable, disable, and re-enable transitions so registrations do not accumulate.
This pattern is design guidance based on the callbacks’ repeatable lifecycle; Unity does not automatically manage custom event subscriptions for a component.

4. Treating OnDisable as final destruction
OnDisable() is called for more than deliberate component disabling. Unity’s Unity 6.0.3 reference lists disabling the component, deactivating its parent GameObject, destruction of the component or parent, scene unload, and script reload during a domain reload. It also states that OnDisable() cannot be a coroutine. Unity’s OnDisable reference describes these cases.
Because a disable can be followed by another enable, avoid irreversible teardown in OnDisable() unless it is safe if the component becomes active again. Use OnDestroy() for work specifically associated with destruction rather than every exit from the active state.

5. Writing activation logic that is not safe to repeat
Repeated transitions expose lifecycle bugs when activation and deactivation do not form a reversible pair. For example, an activation path may register the same handler twice, start work twice, or reset data that should persist; a deactivation path may release something that the next activation still expects.

Give each resource a clear owner
- Acquire or register resources on activation when they are needed only while active.
- Release or unregister them on deactivation, using the matching resource or handler.
- Keep state that must persist across disable-and-enable cycles outside activation-only reset logic.
- Make each activation safe after any valid prior deactivation, rather than assuming the callbacks run only once.
