For most people looking for an inexpensive standalone router, the TP-Link Archer AX55 is the strongest-supported pick. RTINGS names it its best budget router, while Tom’s Guide selects it as its best budget Wi-Fi 6 router. It combines Wi-Fi 6, gigabit wired ports and solid results in both reviewers’ tests, but it has no multi-gig ports and those test results are not a promise of the speed or coverage you will get at home.

How the five picks differ

Router Best fit Wi-Fi and wired connections Important caveat
TP-Link Archer AX55 Best-supported budget standalone choice Dual-band Wi-Fi 6; one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports and one USB 3.0 port, according to Tom’s Guide No multi-gig ports. Test results vary by reviewer and environment. Tom’s Guide; TP-Link
TP-Link Archer AX10 Basic everyday use at a lower cost Wi-Fi 6; the cited RTINGS summary does not state port counts No DFS support, which can matter in crowded wireless environments. RTINGS
TP-Link Archer AX21 A standalone option if the price is attractive Dual-band Wi-Fi 6; four Gigabit Ethernet ports; OFDMA/MU-MIMO, OneMesh and WPA3, per TechRadar Its reported $59.98 Amazon deal was observed September 18, 2026, against an $89.99 list price at that time—not a current price. TechRadar
ASUS RT-AX1800S A no-frills ASUS alternative Dual-band Wi-Fi 6; one 1 Gbps WAN port and five 1 Gbps LAN ports, according to RTINGS No 6 GHz band. Confirm that the model and regional SKU are available where you live. RTINGS
Amazon eero 6 Expandable mesh coverage for a larger home or dead zone Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh system with app-based management Not a like-for-like single-router alternative; advanced features such as ad blocking and content filters require a subscription. RTINGS

These are category picks, not a controlled five-router head-to-head ranking: the cited reviewers tested models under different conditions. The best choice also depends on your internet plan, devices, home construction, obstacles, wireless congestion and where you can place the router.

Which cheap router suits your home?

TP-Link Archer AX55: the balanced standalone pick

RTINGS names the AX55 its best budget router. In its testing, the router reached about 750 Mbps at close range and remained useful near 100 feet. Separately, Tom’s Guide measured 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet, 288.4 Mbps at 50 feet and 89.6 Mbps at 75 feet. Those are results from two reviewers’ distinct test setups, not expected speeds for every household. RTINGS; Tom’s Guide

The AX55 is a practical fit if you want a conventional Wi-Fi 6 router with gigabit Ethernet and a USB 3.0 port. Its wireless class is AX3000, but that label does not mean a single device will receive 3,000 Mbps. It also lacks multi-gig ports, so it is not the right pick if you need wired WAN or LAN connections faster than gigabit. TP-Link’s product specifications

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

TP-Link Archer AX10: for ordinary browsing and streaming

RTINGS calls the AX10 its best cheap router and reports up to 600 Mbps close up, with solid performance around 100 feet in its tests. It describes it as suitable for browsing, downloads and 4K streaming. The key trade-off is that the AX10 does not support DFS channels. In an apartment building or another crowded wireless area, that can limit channel choices. RTINGS

TP-Link Archer AX21: consider it when the deal is real

The AX21 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with four Gigabit Ethernet ports, OFDMA/MU-MIMO, OneMesh support and WPA3, according to TechRadar. Its appeal is price-sensitive: TechRadar reported an Amazon price of $59.98 versus an $89.99 list price on September 18, 2026, and said the deal was not the model’s all-time low. Treat those figures as a dated snapshot, not a live offer; check today’s price, stock and hardware revision before buying. TechRadar

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

ASUS RT-AX1800S: a straightforward ASUS option

RTINGS identifies the RT-AX1800S as its budget ASUS pick. It has dual-band Wi-Fi 6, one 1 Gbps WAN port and five 1 Gbps LAN ports, making it a reasonable match for everyday browsing, streaming and smart-home connections on a sub-gigabit internet plan. It does not offer the 6 GHz band. Availability and exact model variants can differ by region, so verify the listing before ordering. RTINGS

Amazon eero 6: choose mesh when coverage is the problem

The eero 6 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh system rather than a direct substitute for a single router. RTINGS describes it as suitable for internet service up to about 700 Mbps in its testing, with app-based management and an expansion path for wider coverage. Its range performance was described as decent, not exceptional, and advanced features such as ad blocking and content filters require a subscription. It makes the most sense when a dead zone or larger layout matters more than comparing one-unit router specifications. RTINGS

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

What to check before choosing

  • Match the router to your internet plan. A gigabit WAN port is a poor fit if you need a faster-than-gigabit wired internet connection. The AX55 and RT-AX1800S have gigabit WAN connections in the cited specifications.
  • Separate Wi-Fi class from real-world speed. Client capability, distance, walls, interference and traffic affect what a device actually receives. TP-Link says AX55 throughput, coverage and connected-device counts are not guaranteed and vary with network conditions, client limitations and environmental factors, including building materials, obstacles, traffic density and client location. TP-Link
  • Think about coverage before buying more speed. A mesh system offers an expansion path for a dead zone or larger home, but it is a different setup from one standalone router and may involve subscription costs for some features.
  • Check the exact regional model and current listing. Availability, hardware revision, firmware support and price can vary; the AX21 price above is specifically a historical September 2026 deal.
  • Account for congestion. The AX10’s lack of DFS support is a specific drawback for some crowded wireless environments, including apartment buildings.

Should you consider Wi-Fi 7 instead?

RTINGS lists the TP-Link Archer BE230 as a Wi-Fi 7 successor to the AX55, noting higher top speeds and a faster WAN port, but also significantly better range and stronger cost-effectiveness for the AX55 for most uses. TechRadar describes the BE230 as dual-band Wi-Fi 7 without 6 GHz and reports two 2.5Gbps ports. It may suit someone with faster-than-gigabit wired needs, but the cited information does not make it an automatic replacement for a budget Wi-Fi 6 pick; pricing is also deal-sensitive.
