Yes—if your work is mostly browsing, email, documents, video calls, and note-taking, a tablet with a keyboard can replace an old laptop. The catch is that the tablet’s price is only part of the cost: keyboard, stand or case, app compatibility, and storage all matter. The five options below are use-case matches, not a ranking, and the available 2026 price snapshots do not establish that every complete setup stays under $500.

Can a tablet replace your laptop?

For light productivity, often. Microsoft’s US-market guidance says tablets suit note-taking, light productivity, and mobility, while heavy multitasking, specialized software, and long typing sessions can favor a traditional laptop. Microsoft also notes that features and availability may vary by region.

Before switching, check that the apps and file formats you rely on work well on the tablet’s operating system. A tablet may offer a mobile version of an app without matching the desktop version’s tools or workflow. If your work depends on specialist Windows or macOS software, multiple demanding applications at once, or hours of comfortable typing, keep a laptop in consideration.

Five tablet options, matched to different kinds of work

These choices draw on 2026 US buying-guide coverage. They are not five independently tested laptop replacements: the sources do not establish comparable performance, keyboard costs, or complete package prices for all five. Confirm the exact model and accessories before buying.

1. Apple 11-inch iPad with A16: best fit for a responsive everyday tablet

Choose this if your tasks work in iPadOS apps and you want a compact tablet for documents, browsing, and video calls. TechRepublic listed the 128GB Wi-Fi model at a $449 starting price in its 2026 comparison; that is a reported price snapshot, not a guaranteed current offer or a price including a keyboard.

Tom’s Guide measured 11 hours and 25 minutes of battery life on the iPad 11 Wi-Fi in continuous Wi-Fi browsing at 150 nits. That is one review’s result under its stated test, not a directly comparable battery ranking against the other devices here. The iPad runs iPadOS, not desktop macOS, so check that your required applications and workflows are supported before treating it as a computer replacement.

2. Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2: best fit if you want a larger screen

This is the large-screen option among the named candidates. TechRepublic recorded a $499.99 estimated value and a $349.99 checked selling price in its 2026 comparison. Those figures are snapshots from that source, not a current price promise; the checked price is not necessarily a recurring offer.

Lenovo’s US product page presents keyboard support and shows a keyboard case as optional. Do not assume the case is included in a particular bundle: verify the exact generation, SKU, keyboard compatibility, and box contents. Add the cost of a compatible keyboard and stand or case before comparing its complete setup with a laptop.

3. Samsung Galaxy Tab: best fit if you already use Samsung or Android

Samsung Galaxy Tab models appear in 2026 budget-tablet coverage, making the range worth considering if your apps and devices are already in the Android or Samsung ecosystem. The available evidence does not identify a specific Galaxy Tab configuration with a confirmed laptop-ready keyboard bundle and full setup price. Select an exact model only after checking its current US price, storage, multitasking needs, and compatible keyboard.

The Galaxy Tab A11+ appears in an August 2026 budget roundup, but that coverage does not establish its laptop-replacement performance or a bundled keyboard. Treat it as a possible basic-use tablet, not a substantiated laptop substitute.

4. Motorola Moto Pad (2026): best fit for basic work and media

Tom’s Guide includes the Moto Pad (2026) in its inexpensive-tablet coverage. It is a candidate for basic work such as web browsing, email, and reading, alongside media use—not a proven choice for heavy multitasking. The available information does not establish a complete setup price or a bundled keyboard. Check the exact model’s current US availability and keyboard support, including whether a Bluetooth keyboard and a stable stand meet your needs.

5. A second, verified Galaxy Tab or Lenovo Idea Tab configuration: only if it meets your total-cost rule

The available sources do not establish a fifth exact model that can responsibly be recommended as a laptop replacement with a verified keyboard and a complete price. If you want five candidates on your shortlist, use a specific Galaxy Tab or Lenovo Idea Tab configuration only after confirming its current US price, compatible typing setup, and fit for your apps. Do not count an unnamed model—or a tablet without a workable keyboard—as a verified pick.

Apple 11-inch iPad with A16, 128GB Wi-Fi TechRepublic’s 2026 comparison listed a $449 starting price; keyboard cost not stated. Buy a compatible keyboard separately unless the exact bundle says otherwise; confirm generation compatibility. Everyday tasks that work in iPadOS apps.
Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 TechRepublic’s 2026 comparison recorded $499.99 estimated value and $349.99 checked selling price; keyboard cost not stated. Lenovo shows an optional keyboard case; exact bundle contents need confirmation. Work where a larger display is useful.

A useful comparison includes the keyboard and stand, app compatibility, multitasking, display readability, battery evidence, storage, update support, and portability. A low tablet-only price can be misleading if the typing setup pushes the total beyond your budget.

How to decide whether a tablet will work for your day

  1. List your essential tasks. Include the applications, websites, files, and peripherals you use—not just general categories such as “office work.”
  2. Check app and operating-system fit. Confirm that the tablet supports the specific features you need, especially for specialist software or complex document workflows.
  3. Price the typing setup. Check whether a keyboard is included with the exact SKU. If not, add a compatible keyboard and a stable case or stand; consider whether a trackpad is important to you.
  4. Check storage and support. Confirm the storage configuration and the manufacturer’s update and support information for the model you are considering.
  5. Test your real workflow if possible. Try a long document, switching between your usual apps, joining a video call, and handling the files you normally use. A tablet that feels convenient for browsing may be frustrating for extended typing.

What the available battery and price figures do—and do not—tell you

The iPad battery result cited above comes from Tom’s Guide’s continuous Wi-Fi browsing test at 150 nits. It describes that tested iPad under that method; it does not predict every person’s runtime, and it should not be treated as a common-benchmark comparison with the other tablets.

The cited iPad and Lenovo prices are 2026 source snapshots. They do not establish the cheapest live offer, prices in other regions, or the cost of a keyboard-equipped package. Check current local pricing and bundle contents before making a purchase decision.
