For the strongest all-around pirate fantasy, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag takes the top spot: it pairs a story-led Caribbean adventure with life at sea. The best pick changes with your preferred play style, though. Sea of Thieves is built around shared crew adventures, Sid Meier’s Pirates! puts privateering choices first, and the final two picks lean into LEGO action and puzzle comedy. This is an editorial ranking, not an objective score: it weighs how well each game delivers its particular version of being a pirate, alongside story, solo or crew suitability, and current platform availability.

How this ranking works

Pirate games do not all aim for the same experience. Some are story-driven action adventures; others emphasize sailing with friends, open-ended privateering, licensed comedy, or puzzles. The order below favors a vivid pirate identity, a memorable core experience, and a clear reason to choose each game. Platform listings are included where the official pages establish them; availability can vary by region and edition.

The five best pirate games

1. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag — best overall story-led pirate adventure

Black Flag earns the top position for combining a Caribbean setting and a defined action-adventure story with the fantasy of commanding a pirate ship. Ubisoft describes the original as a 2013 pirate action-adventure. Its protagonist, Edward Kenway, makes it a strong choice for players who want a central character and narrative rather than a primarily social sandbox.

Ubisoft also has a separate page for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which places Edward Kenway in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy and lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC storefronts. That is a distinct remake listing, not the same edition as the 2013 original. Check the relevant store for the edition and regional availability you want.

2. Sea of Thieves — best for sailing with a crew

Sea of Thieves is an open-world pirate adventure with story-driven Tall Tales. Its appeal is the shared voyage: crews sail, explore, and take on adventures together, making it the natural pick when playing with friends matters more than following a single hero’s plot. It also supports crews across platforms.

3. Sid Meier’s Pirates! — best open-ended privateering sandbox

If you would rather shape your own pirate career than follow a tightly defined story, Sid Meier’s Pirates! is the sandbox choice. Steam describes sailing the Caribbean as either a marauder or a privateer in pursuit of riches, with the player choosing their way of life. That freedom gives it a different emphasis from the character-led adventure at the top of the list.

4. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean — best lighthearted licensed adventure

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean adapts the Pirates of the Caribbean world as a TT Games action-adventure in LEGO style. It is the pick for players who want a licensed setting and a lighter action-adventure tone rather than a more simulation-minded pirate sandbox. The cited official page establishes the game’s adaptation and style, but does not provide a platform comparison here.

5. The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition — best pirate comedy and puzzles

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition rounds out the list by treating pirate life as a setting for comedy and puzzle-solving. It is the outlier for readers who want witty pirate storytelling rather than ship-centered action or crew play. Its place reflects that distinctive niche, not a claim that it offers the same kind of adventure as the other four.
