There isn’t one best home Wi-Fi router for every household. A single router can suit a smaller home with few dead zones, while a mesh system is often the more relevant option for a multi-floor or obstruction-heavy layout. The five Wi-Fi 7 candidates below are organized by use case—not presented as a single, independently tested ranking—so you can compare the features that matter to your broadband plan, wired devices, and home layout.
How to choose a home Wi-Fi router
Start with your home and devices, not the router’s largest advertised speed number. A router’s wireless class is an aggregate specification, not a promise that one device will reach that speed. Building materials, obstacles, placement, interference, network traffic, and client capabilities all affect real-world performance.
- Choose the right form factor: A standalone router may be enough when one centrally placed unit can cover the spaces you use. Consider mesh when dead zones or multiple floors make coverage difficult; there is no universal home-size threshold that determines when mesh is necessary.
- Match the wired ports to your plan and equipment: Check the WAN port against your internet service speed, then count LAN ports for wired PCs, consoles, network storage, and other devices. Multi-gig broadband can be bottlenecked by a slower port.
- Check client support: Wi-Fi 7 features require compatible client devices. A new router does not add Wi-Fi 7 capabilities to older phones, laptops, or other clients.
- Compare mesh backhaul and placement: Mesh nodes need a way to communicate with one another, either wirelessly or over wired backhaul. Their placement and the obstacles between them influence the result.
Five Wi-Fi 7 router candidates by use case
These candidates draw on a 2026 consumer roundup, an independent comparison of tested Wi-Fi 7 routers, and manufacturer specifications. Review findings belong to those publications and their test conditions; they are not universal performance guarantees.
| Candidate | Best fit | What the available evidence says |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link Archer BE770 | Standalone-router shortlist | Tom’s Guide names it as its top recommendation in its 2026 roundup. The roundup’s search-result summary mentions multi-gig ports and USB; check the full review and current regional specifications before buying. |
| TP-Link Archer BE550 | Multiple multi-gig wired devices | TP-Link specifies one 2.5 Gbps WAN port and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, Wi-Fi 7, and EasyMesh compatibility. The manufacturer says actual throughput, coverage, and device capacity vary with conditions and client capability. |
| ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro | Premium Wi-Fi 7 mesh shortlist | Tom’s Guide describes it as a leading Wi-Fi 7 mesh system and reports a positive setup experience from its reviewer. Treat those as that publication’s review findings, not independent testing by this guide. |
| eero Max 7 | Mesh performance comparison | RTINGS calls it the best-performing Wi-Fi 7 router among the choices it tested. Its speed results apply to RTINGS’ test conditions, not every home. |
| TP-Link Archer BE900 | Wired connectivity alternative | In RTINGS’ comparison, it had close-range speeds similar to the eero Max 7, stronger wired connectivity, and weaker long-range performance. Consult the full test methodology and current specifications when comparing it. |
What distinguishes the shortlist
For a standalone router
The Archer BE770 is a candidate to investigate if you want one Wi-Fi 7 router rather than a mesh kit. Tom’s Guide recommends it in its 2026 roundup, but a headline recommendation alone does not tell you whether its range, ports, or current price fit your home. Check the full review and the specifications for the exact model and region before deciding.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset

For several wired multi-gig devices
The Archer BE550’s specified port layout is unusually straightforward to assess: one 2.5 Gbps WAN connection and four 2.5 Gbps LAN connections. That may be useful when several wired devices need multi-gig links. It does not mean your internet service or wireless clients will achieve 2.5 Gbps; their capabilities and the rest of the network still matter. TP-Link’s product information also identifies EasyMesh compatibility, which may be relevant if you plan to expand coverage.
For a premium mesh setup
The ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro is worth comparing if you want a mesh system and value setup experience. Tom’s Guide’s positive setup observation is specific to its reviewer; it does not establish that every household will find installation or ongoing management equally easy.
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

For mesh performance evidence
RTINGS’ comparison gives the eero Max 7 a performance distinction among the Wi-Fi 7 routers it tested. That is useful as a test-based comparison, but your results may differ with node placement, backhaul, building materials, congestion, and client devices. Compare the review’s testing conditions with your own situation rather than treating its ranking as a guaranteed home result.
For more wired connectivity
RTINGS reports that the Archer BE900 offered stronger wired connectivity than the eero Max 7 in its comparison, alongside similar close-range speed and weaker long-range performance. That tradeoff makes it a possible fit when wired connections matter more than distant wireless reach; confirm the full review and specifications before purchase.
Rank #3

Wi-Fi 7 specifications and coverage claims: how to read them
Wi-Fi 7 is most relevant when your clients can use its supported features. Older devices can still connect to a compatible router, but they do not gain capabilities they lack. If most of your household devices are older, the practical benefit of replacing a working router may be limited; compare the cost and ports against your actual broadband and device needs.
Do not equate an advertised aggregate wireless-speed class with the speed a single phone or computer will see. Likewise, coverage estimates are not guarantees: walls, floors, interference, router placement, and client antennas all affect usable signal. eero, for example, states that the tri-band Wi-Fi 7 eero Pro 7 offers up to 2,000 sq. ft. (190 m²) of indoor coverage per unit. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently measured promise for every home. The eero 7 is a separate dual-band Wi-Fi 7 model with two auto-sensing 2.5 GbE ports, according to eero support.

Which type should you choose?
- Smaller home, few dead zones: Compare a single router’s tested range and port layout with your broadband plan. Avoid paying for mesh nodes you may not need.
- Multiple floors or difficult obstacles: Compare mesh kits, their node placement options, and whether backhaul can use Ethernet or must be wireless. A mesh system addresses coverage differently from a faster single router.
- Multi-gig internet or wired equipment: Count the WAN and LAN ports at the speeds your service and wired devices require. The Archer BE550’s four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports are one concrete example of a multi-gig layout.
- Wi-Fi 7-capable household devices: A Wi-Fi 7 router may make more sense when clients can use its features; do not assume every connected device will benefit equally.
