For a 4×6-inch print, aim for an image that is at least 1200×1800 pixels (or 1800×1200 pixels for a landscape photo). That works out to 300 pixels per inch (PPI), a useful quality target—not a universal minimum. A lower-resolution image may still print well, depending on the photo and the print provider.
What resolution do you need for a 4×6 print?
At 300 PPI, multiply each print dimension in inches by 300: 4 × 300 = 1200 pixels and 6 × 300 = 1800 pixels. So the practical target is 1200×1800 pixels for a portrait-oriented print, or 1800×1200 pixels for landscape. HP gives the same 1200×1800-pixel target for a 4×6 print in its photo-resolution guidance.
PPI describes how many image pixels fit into each inch of the print. It is not the same as a printer’s DPI, which refers to the dots the printer uses to render an image. For your file, divide its pixel dimensions by the intended print dimensions to estimate PPI. A 1200×1800-pixel image printed at 4×6 inches is 300 PPI.

Yes. A 300 PPI target does not mean every smaller file is unusable. Nations Photo Lab lists 720×1080 pixels—180 PPI at 4×6 inches—as good quality for this print size, while describing 300 PPI as optimal for best-quality prints in its resolution guidance. These are that provider’s recommendations, not a guarantee for every lab, printer, or image.

The lower the pixel count, the less detail the image can provide at the same print size. Whether the result looks acceptable also depends on the original photo and your expectations. Check the print provider’s current upload guidance, especially if its ordering system flags your image’s resolution.
Check the crop before ordering
A 4×6 print has a 2:3 aspect ratio. If your photo uses a different shape, the print service may crop part of it or add borders, depending on the fit option. Review the crop preview before placing the order, and keep faces, text, and other important details away from the edges that may be trimmed. Prepare the photo for the best result
- Use the original file. Choose the full-resolution photo rather than a compressed copy saved from a social-media post or messaging app.
- Select 4×6 inches. The print size determines the PPI calculation, so check resolution for the size you actually plan to order.
- Review the crop preview. Adjust the fit or crop if important content sits near an edge.
- Follow the provider’s warning. If the service reports that the image may print poorly, consider using a higher-resolution original or a smaller print size.
Changing a PPI or DPI number in file properties does not add detail that the camera did not capture. Likewise, enlarging a photo can increase its pixel dimensions without restoring missing detail.
