For YouTube’s standard route to ad and Premium revenue, the current threshold is 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months. A 24/7 stream can contribute, but only if its watch time qualifies: livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand (VOD) do not count. Reaching the threshold does not guarantee approval; YouTube reviews the channel for policy compliance.
How to estimate the time to 4,000 watch hours
A useful first estimate is average concurrent viewers multiplied by hours streamed. It assumes the viewing qualifies and that the stream remains available as a qualifying public VOD. Interruptions, changing audience levels, or non-qualifying watch time reduce the total.
| Stream duration | Average qualifying concurrent viewers needed | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | About 166.7 | 4,000 ÷ 24 |
| 30 days (720 hours) | About 5.56 | 4,000 ÷ 720 |
| 90 days (2,160 hours) | About 1.85 | 4,000 ÷ 2,160 |
| 365 days (8,760 hours) | About 0.457 | 4,000 ÷ 8,760 |
These are arithmetic illustrations, not guarantees from YouTube. The 12-month eligibility window is rolling, so qualifying hours must fall within that period. Check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio for your channel’s progress.

| Route | Requirements described by YouTube | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard ads and Premium route | 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or the alternative threshold of 10 million qualified public Shorts views in 90 days | Ads and YouTube Premium revenue, subject to review and applicable requirements |
| Expanded YPP early access | In eligible countries: 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days | Earlier access to certain features, such as fan funding and Shopping; it is not the same ads and Premium threshold |
YouTube also lists other application prerequisites, including country availability, monetization-policy compliance, two-step verification, advanced features access, and an active AdSense for YouTube account or readiness to create one through YouTube Studio. Confirm the current checklist on YouTube’s expanded YPP overview and YPP eligibility page.
Do 24/7 livestream hours count toward monetization?
Only qualifying watch time counts; being live for a long time by itself does not create watch hours. YouTube excludes watch time from private, unlisted, and deleted videos, ad campaigns, Shorts, and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD.
If you plan to stream continuously, keep qualifying VODs public and intact, and verify progress in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s YPP eligibility guidance for the official exclusions.

Reaching the threshold does not guarantee approval
Meeting the subscriber and watch-hour or Shorts-view numbers makes a channel eligible to apply; it does not guarantee acceptance. YouTube says qualifying channels go through a review for compliance with channel monetization policies and must have no active Community Guidelines strikes to apply.

How to build qualifying watch time
- Make content viewers want to watch. A stream’s duration is not a substitute for useful, engaging content. Audience interest and viewing time determine the arithmetic result.
- Keep livestreams eligible. Make sure the stream is public and preserve its VOD; unlisted, deleted, or non-converted livestreams do not count toward the threshold.
- Track actual progress. Use the Earn tab in YouTube Studio rather than estimating from uptime alone.
- Check all application requirements. Confirm your subscriber count, eligible watch hours or Shorts views, country availability, and other requirements on YouTube’s official Help pages.
- Plan for review. Review your channel against YouTube’s monetization policies before applying; reaching the numbers is not automatic approval.
Scheduled change to the ads and Premium threshold
YouTube’s Help page says that, starting February 1, 2027, new creators seeking ads and Premium entry will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or the listed Shorts alternative, alongside 1,000 subscribers. This is a scheduled future change, not the threshold currently in effect as of October 4, 2026. Check YouTube’s YPP changes page near the time you apply.
