If an Android feature is missing, your phone may not meet its hardware requirements, its software may be too old, an app permission may block access, or the feature may not have rolled out for your device or region. “Android” covers phones with different capabilities, so the cause depends on the specific feature and your exact model.
1. Your phone lacks the required hardware or performance
Some features depend on components a phone either has or does not have. For example, an app that requires a compass sensor may be incompatible with a device without one. Google Play can use an app’s declared hardware requirements to decide whether to offer it on a device. Android’s compatibility guidance explains how apps declare these requirements.
More demanding features may also require a particular performance tier. Google says its Gemini Intelligence features require on-device Nano models, at least 12 GB of RAM, a qualified flagship system-on-chip, operating-system upgrade support, and security support. Those are requirements for that Google product family, not a baseline for Android features generally. Check Google’s Android product information for the applicable feature details.

Look up the official requirements for the exact feature and compare them with the precise model and configuration of your phone. A phone from the same brand—or even a similarly named model—may have different hardware.

2. Your Android version or app support is too old
Android versions add capabilities that older releases may not include. An app that relies on a newer system API may therefore lack that capability on an older phone. Developers can check which APIs are available and provide a fallback when a newer one is not essential. Android’s API-level guidance describes how apps specify their software requirements.
App availability also has a separate Play Store policy dimension. As of August 31, 2026, Google says existing apps generally need to target Android 15 (API 35) or higher to remain available to new users on devices running a newer Android version. Lower-target apps may be limited to devices running at or below the app’s target version, subject to policy exceptions. This is a distribution rule; it does not mean an app already installed will immediately stop working. See Google Play’s target API level requirements for current details.

Check your phone’s Android version, the app’s version, and the developer’s support information. A system update can help only if your model is eligible for it and the missing capability depends on newer software.
3. An app permission or privacy setting blocks access
An installed app may not be able to use a protected capability because its permission was denied. Declaring a permission does not automatically grant access: Android gives users control over whether an app can use protected resources, and developers are expected to handle denial where possible. Check the relevant permission in your phone’s Settings, then look in the app for a separate feature toggle. The exact Settings labels vary by Android version and manufacturer. Allowing a permission may restore access within the app, but it cannot supply missing hardware or make a region-restricted service available.
Permissions can also affect whether an app appears in Google Play, which is different from a feature being disabled inside an installed app. Google Play may infer that an app needs hardware from its declared permissions—for example, camera permission can imply that a camera is required unless the app explicitly marks that feature as optional. 4. The feature has not rolled out to your device, carrier, or market
A feature announcement does not guarantee that every Android phone will receive the feature at the same time—or at all. Android distinguishes Android Drops from Pixel Drops: Android Drop features can arrive through Google Play services or app updates, while Pixel Drops are specific to Pixel devices. Many Android Drop features can work on older Android versions, though advanced capabilities may still require particular hardware or a recent OS. Availability can also vary by region, carrier, and device, as Android’s product information notes. Check the specific feature’s supported-device and country information, then consult your phone maker or carrier about your model’s update schedule.

How to find out why a feature is missing
- Name the feature and phone precisely. Record the feature’s name and your phone’s full model designation; a brand name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Check the feature’s own eligibility. Look for its official requirements, supported-device list, and country availability. Do not assume that a general Android announcement applies to every phone.
- Check software versions. Find your Android version and app version, and review the developer’s support notes. Install available updates if your phone is eligible.
- Review permissions and app settings. If the feature belongs to an app, check its Android permissions and any setting that could disable the feature.
- Ask the manufacturer or carrier about timing. If the feature depends on a system update or firmware, check the schedule for your exact model and network.
These causes can overlap. Without the name of the feature and the phone model, it is not possible to identify which one applies; diagnose those specifics before concluding that a replacement phone is necessary.
