To flush the DNS cache in Windows 11, run ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt or a Command Prompt tab in Windows Terminal, use the same command through the Run dialog, or run Clear-DnsClientCache in PowerShell. These are four convenient routes to two documented Windows operations—not four different ways of changing DNS settings.
1. Flush DNS from Command Prompt
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, and open it.
- Enter
ipconfig /flushdnsand press Enter.
Microsoft lists Windows 11 as supported and describes /flushdns as flushing and resetting the DNS client resolver cache, including dynamically added entries and negative cache entries. See Microsoft’s ipconfig documentation.
2. Run the flush command from the Run dialog
- Press Windows+R.
- Enter
cmd /c ipconfig /flushdns, then select OK.
This launches Command Prompt to run the same ipconfig command, then closes it when the command finishes. It is a shortcut for invoking the command, not a separate DNS-cache operation.
3. Use Windows Terminal
- Open Windows Terminal and select a Command Prompt profile. If the current tab is PowerShell, open a Command Prompt tab from the tab/profile menu.
- Enter
ipconfig /flushdnsand press Enter.
This is the same documented command as the Command Prompt route; it is convenient if you already use Terminal.

4. Clear the cache in PowerShell
- Open Start, search for PowerShell, and open it.
- Enter
Clear-DnsClientCacheand press Enter.
Microsoft documents this cmdlet as clearing the DNS client cache and says it is equivalent to ipconfig /flushdns. See Clear-DnsClientCache.
What flushing the DNS cache does—and does not do
Windows keeps DNS name-resolution information in a cache on the local computer. Flushing removes the cached results, including negative entries that record an unsuccessful lookup, so Windows can request fresh resolution rather than reuse that local information.

Flushing does not change the DNS servers configured for the computer, and it does not repair a broken network connection. Use it when a stale or negative local result may be involved; it cannot fix every DNS failure.
If the problem remains after flushing
- Check the configuration. Confirm the computer has the expected IP settings and DNS server addresses.
- Test name resolution separately. Run
nslookup example.com, replacing the example name with the one that fails.nslookupqueries a DNS server without using the Windows DNS client cache. - Check connectivity to the DNS server. A failed ping to the server’s IP address can indicate a network-connectivity problem, although a firewall may block ICMP even when other traffic works.
- Consider an upstream or network issue. If the settings are correct but lookups still fail, the cause may be the DNS server or network rather than cached data.

Do you need to run the terminal as administrator?
Microsoft’s documentation for these client commands does not state that elevation is universally required. If Windows rejects a command because of your device’s permissions or policy, retry it in an elevated Command Prompt, Windows Terminal, or PowerShell window.
