The best free, open-source PHP server setup depends on what you need from the HTTP server around PHP. For most new deployments, PHP-FPM runs the PHP code while Apache, nginx, Caddy, or Lighttpd handles HTTP requests and serves static files. Choose Apache for compatibility and .htaccess, nginx for explicit centralized configuration, Caddy for simpler configuration and certificate management, or Lighttpd when a small server footprint is a priority.
What “PHP application server” means
In a typical modern deployment, the web server and PHP runtime are separate layers. Apache, nginx, Caddy, or Lighttpd accepts HTTP requests, serves static files, and routes requests to the PHP execution layer. PHP-FPM runs PHP workers and communicates with the front end through FastCGI.
PHP’s documentation recommends PHP-FPM for modern deployments and, specifically with Apache, using the mod_proxy_fcgi module rather than starting a new installation with mod_php. Apache documents that proxying PHP to FPM lets it use the event or worker MPM, which can reduce memory use compared with prefork and mod_php. PHP-FPM is not a complete HTTP server: it needs a front end to handle web traffic.

The cited project documentation does not establish a single winner for TLS configuration, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 defaults, or resource consumption across these choices. Check the documentation and requirements for the specific software versions and deployment you plan to run rather than assuming a protocol or performance advantage from the server name alone.

When to choose each setup
Apache HTTP Server + PHP-FPM: choose compatibility first
Apache is a practical fit when an application or hosting environment depends on .htaccess, Apache modules, or conventions familiar from shared hosting. With PHP-FPM, Apache remains the HTTP server while FPM runs PHP. This separates the two jobs and allows Apache to use event or worker MPMs instead of requiring prefork for mod_php.
For a new Apache deployment, configure PHP through mod_proxy_fcgi and PHP-FPM. If you are moving an existing site, check whether its rewrite, access-control, and other per-directory rules rely on .htaccess; that compatibility can save a significant amount of migration work.

nginx + PHP-FPM: choose explicit front-end configuration
nginx is a conventional FastCGI front end. It can serve static assets directly and pass PHP requests to an FPM pool. nginx does not interpret PHP itself, so the FPM service and its pool configuration are part of the deployment.
This setup suits teams that want server behavior defined centrally rather than in per-directory .htaccess files. On migration from Apache, inventory those files and translate the rules the site actually uses into nginx configuration. PHP-FPM also provides controls for worker processes, pools, status reporting, and slow logs, which can help with operational monitoring and diagnosis.

Caddy + PHP-FPM: choose concise configuration
Caddy’s PHP example combines a document root, php_fastcgi, and file_server. The PHP-specific directive sends eligible requests to an index.php entry point, which keeps the common front-end configuration compact. Caddy is also designed to reduce certificate-management friction.
If you want a more integrated PHP deployment, FrankenPHP is a Caddy distribution that calls PHP directly through CGO, as Caddy’s documentation describes. That changes the PHP execution arrangement: it is an alternative to separately operating a Caddy-to-PHP-FPM connection, not another name for PHP-FPM.

Lighttpd + PHP-FPM: choose a small, focused server
Lighttpd is the niche option among these four. Its project documentation emphasizes efficient handling of many connections with a small footprint and recommends PHP-FPM for managing PHP backends. Consider it for constrained systems or a focused deployment where those priorities outweigh the advantage of a larger ecosystem.
Lighttpd’s smaller adoption base is worth factoring into operations: documentation, existing team knowledge, and third-party examples may be less readily available than for Apache or nginx. The 2025 PHP Landscape Report recorded Lighttpd as a selection by 1.93% of respondents; that is survey usage, not a measurement of global market share.

Configure PHP-FPM safely
FPM pools let you manage PHP worker processes and can help separate workloads. Regardless of which front end you choose, protect the FastCGI endpoint: PHP’s manual warns that php-fpm must not be reachable from an untrusted network, because exposure can permit arbitrary code execution. Use a protected local socket or a trusted network path, and do not publish the FPM listener as a public service.

The Perforce Software/Zend 2025 PHP Landscape Report recorded these server selections among survey respondents:
