James Novak’s 3D Print My Shirt project explores how to attach customized 3D-printed decoration to fabric across a shirt—or even an irregular shape such as a trucker hat—without stitching together multiple printed sections. The central challenge is not simply printing a design: it is making the decoration bond across a larger area while keeping the graphic and production process workable. Novak says his method uses heat and no glue, but he has not disclosed the process.
What is 3D Print My Shirt?
3D Print My Shirt is Novak’s project to apply customized 3D-printed decoration to garments. In Sam Freeman’s January 2025 Make: profile, the goal is broader than decorating a flat shirt panel: Novak also considered unusual shapes such as trucker hats.
A key production problem is scale. A garment area can exceed a printer bed, and Novak wanted a repeatable approach that did not rely on hand-sewing multiple printed fabric sections together. The project therefore brings together graphic design, the surface that attaches to the fabric, and a process that can be repeated.

A design must do more than look good on screen. Its underside needs enough contact area to bond to fabric, while its visible form can take advantage of the chosen filament’s appearance. Novak described the trade-off this way:

This means the lettering or graphic and the attachment surface cannot be treated as separate design problems. A narrow or intricate shape may have less area at its base; a broader base may bond differently and affect the look. The profile describes that design consideration but does not provide measurements or a tested design standard.

How do you print on fabric using Novak’s method?
The public description is not detailed enough to reproduce Novak’s process. He told Make: that it uses heat and no glue, while saying the specific method remains a trade secret. He also described burning many shirts while developing it. The article gives no temperature, equipment, sequence, pressure, timing, or other bonding parameters.

That distinction matters: the profile establishes the broad idea of heat-based attachment, not a public tutorial. It does not support treating an ordinary 3D printer, blank cotton T-shirt, or a particular filament as sufficient to reproduce the result.
What materials appear in the project?
Make: captions prototype images as using TPU, PLA, and recycled plastics, and Novak mentions experimenting with color-change filament. These are examples from the project’s experiments, not a recommendation or a validated material list. The profile does not identify a particular printer, filament product, garment specification, or combination as suitable for readers to copy.

What durability evidence did Make: report?
Make: reports that Novak tested shirts through 20 wash cycles and demonstrated tearing or removal of the decoration. Novak said his test shirts had been through “dozens of washes” without issues and that removing the pieces required tearing cotton fibres and ruining the shirt.

What is known about the project’s availability?
The 2025 profile says Novak launched a limited-edition Kickstarter to explore scaling the process. It does not establish the campaign’s current status or confirm that shirts or a service are currently available. The article also says he was accepting used shirts and offering a discount on a later order as part of an effort to reuse old filament; that was a reported offer at the time, not confirmation that it remains open.
Novak’s background, as described by Make:, includes studying 3D printing from 2009 and working on what the article calls the first single-part 3D-printed bicycle frame in 2014. Make: also says he explored combining 3D printing and wool for Woolmark, with prototypes that helped keep the textile-and-printing idea with him. The “first” characterization belongs to the profile and is not independently verified here.
