For a new gaming PC, 32GB is a sensible target if your system supports it and the cost fits your budget. But a working 16GB PC does not automatically need an upgrade: 16GB remains sufficient for many games, and moving to 32GB does not reliably increase average FPS. The upgrade is most useful when a particular game, high graphics settings, or background apps push memory close to its limit and you experience stutters, poor frame pacing, or the need to close other programs.

Is 16GB RAM enough for gaming?

Often, yes. Intel recommends at least 16GB for modern games, and TechSpot’s 2026 comparison found that some tested games ran well at that capacity. The important qualification is that memory needs vary by game, settings, and what else is running. A game can be playable on 16GB while leaving little room for a browser, chat app, or other active software.

In TechSpot’s 2026 test, Arc Raiders was reported to run optimally at 16GB. Marvel Rivals performed virtually identically with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, while Borderlands 4 also performed roughly on par at 16GB and 32GB. Those results describe the tested setup and versions, not a guarantee for every PC or future game update. TechSpot’s 2026 RAM comparison

What does 32GB change—and will it increase FPS?

More capacity gives Windows and games additional room to keep active data in physical memory. That can reduce competition between a game and background programs when 16GB is under pressure. The benefit may appear as steadier frame times, fewer stutters, or better 1% lows rather than a large change in average FPS. If your game already runs smoothly and memory is not a constraint, extra capacity may have little visible effect.

Published results differ by game. PC Gamer’s selected comparisons found an 11% improvement in 1% lows in Stalker 2 and a 34% improvement in Escape from Tarkov when comparing its 16GB and 32GB configurations; its Hogwarts Legacy retest found only a very minor reduction in traversal stutters. These are outcomes from that publication’s test configuration, not expected gains for other systems. PC Gamer’s 16GB-versus-32GB testing

TechSpot’s 2026 comparison likewise found that usage and performance do not always move together: Marvel Rivals used about 18GB in its 32GB and 64GB configurations while showing virtually identical performance at 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The article notes some data could be offloaded to the pagefile. By contrast, its test of Mafia: The Old Country reported poor frame-time performance at 16GB and said around 20GB was needed for a smooth experience, recommending a 24GB to 32GB kit for that case. These are game-specific test observations, not universal requirements. TechSpot’s 2026 comparison

When is the upgrade worth it?

Consider 32GB if you multitask while gaming

Streaming, voice chat, browser tabs, and video can all use system memory alongside a game. Intel specifically recommends considering 32GB if you do more than game, including streaming or keeping Discord, YouTube, or Twitch open. The memory used by individual apps varies with the system and workload: in one TechSpot setup, Discord used roughly 400–500MB and a Chrome tab playing 4K YouTube used about 1.2–1.5GB. Those are measurements from that test, not fixed app requirements. Intel’s gaming RAM guide TechSpot’s earlier comparison

Consider it if you see memory pressure or stutter

Pay attention to repeatable hitching, especially when moving through game worlds or keeping other programs open. In an earlier TechSpot test, a demanding example showed frame-time spikes and traversal stutters with only 16GB available. That does not prove RAM is the cause of every stutter: CPU limits, graphics settings, storage, drivers, and game behavior can produce similar symptoms. Check whether memory use is actually high during the problem before buying more.

Keep 16GB if your games run smoothly

If your current games play smoothly at the settings you use and you do not need to close background apps, the cited sources do not establish an urgent reason to upgrade. Some tested titles showed little performance difference between capacities. A RAM upgrade is not a general-purpose FPS boost.

RAM capacity is not a substitute for VRAM or a faster GPU

System RAM and graphics-card VRAM serve different roles. When a game’s assets exceed available VRAM, some demand can spill into system memory, but adding system RAM does not turn it into dedicated VRAM or remove a GPU bottleneck. TechSpot notes that a graphics card with less than 16GB VRAM can further tax system memory in Battlefield 6 on the Extreme preset. If the graphics card is the limit, reducing graphics settings may be more relevant than adding system RAM. TechSpot’s 2026 comparison

How to choose a compatible 32GB upgrade

Capacity is only one part of a memory upgrade. Before buying, check the specifications for your motherboard or PC and processor; a kit that does not match the system’s memory generation or form factor will not be a suitable upgrade.

  • DDR generation: Confirm whether the PC uses DDR4, DDR5, or another generation. These are not interchangeable.
  • Module type: Desktops generally use DIMMs; laptops may use SO-DIMMs or have soldered, non-upgradeable memory.
  • Slots and current modules: Check how many slots are available and whether the existing memory should be replaced or supplemented.
  • Supported capacity and speed: Verify motherboard and processor limits and supported memory speed. Mixing modules can affect the speed or configuration the system can run.
  • Laptop upgradeability: Confirm the exact model’s service specifications before purchasing; some laptops do not allow memory upgrades.

If shopping, search for a category matching the system—for example, 32GB DDR5 RAM kit 2x16GB for a compatible DDR5 desktop or 32GB DDR4 RAM kit 2x16GB for a compatible DDR4 desktop. These descriptions are not recommendations for a particular brand or speed. Intel also advises checking capacity, speed, form factor, and processor memory specifications. How to compare 16GB and 32GB fairly

When judging benchmark claims or diagnosing your own PC, keep the rest of the test as consistent as possible. A comparison between different platforms cannot isolate the effect of capacity.

  • Use the same game version, CPU, GPU, resolution, and graphics preset.
  • Match memory generation and speed, and note whether the configuration uses one module or multiple modules.
  • Keep background apps consistent, since they also consume memory.
  • Look beyond average FPS: check 1% lows, frame times, and stutter in the same scenes or workload.

Memory speed and channel configuration can affect performance separately from capacity. Kingston’s manufacturer benchmark material reports different speed effects in CPU-heavy and GPU-heavy games and better performance from a tested dual-channel setup than a single-module setup in its Ashes of the Singularity test. That manufacturer test does not establish a universal gain from increasing capacity. Kingston’s RAM speed benchmark material

What hardware vendors recommend

Recommendations are guidance, not proof that every player needs the same amount. Intel advises at least 16GB for modern games and says people who do more than game should consider 32GB. HP’s 2026 guide describes 16GB as an entry-level gaming target and 32GB as a mid-range target; it presents 16GB DDR5 as sufficient for most 1080p and many 1440p games, and recommends 32GB for streaming, resource-heavy apps, or high-fidelity 4K gaming. HP characterizes these figures as general estimates. Intel HP’s 2026 gaming PC guide

Kingston calls 32GB the new baseline for a smooth gaming experience, while also noting that needs depend on the game and background apps. That is Kingston’s vendor guidance rather than an independent benchmark consensus. Kingston’s gaming memory guidance
