Three Redis design decisions commonly turn into production incidents: treating memory limits and eviction as an afterthought, letting expiration or hot keys amplify load, and using commands or access patterns that create avoidable latency. Decide what data Redis may discard, how the application behaves when cache entries disappear or become popular, and how you will diagnose slow requests before those choices meet real traffic.

1. Treating memory limits and eviction as an afterthought

Redis needs an explicit answer to a basic question: what should happen when it reaches its configured memory limit? An eviction policy determines which keys Redis may remove to make room for new data. That is often acceptable for reconstructible cache entries, but can be unsafe if Redis also holds application data the system cannot afford to lose.

Choose the policy based on the data’s role and the application’s ability to rebuild it. Redis documents the available policies and their behavior in its key eviction guide; defaults and behavior should be checked against the Redis version and service you actually run.

Design What to decide Main risk
Cache-only instance Which cache entries are safe to evict, and what happens on a miss? Eviction can raise misses and shift work to the source system.
Mixed cache and persistent application data Can any key be evicted without violating application expectations? An eviction policy suitable for cache entries may discard data the application treats as durable.
Separate instances for distinct workloads Would operational isolation make memory limits and eviction behavior easier to reason about? More infrastructure to operate, but less risk that cache pressure affects keys with different retention needs.

Redis recommends considering separate instances where possible when combining cache and persistent keys. This is a workload-specific design option, not a requirement for every deployment. If you keep the workloads together, document which keys are reconstructible, set a memory limit and eviction policy deliberately, and alert on memory use and evictions before they become an outage.

Make persistence part of the recovery design

Eviction and persistence answer different questions. Eviction controls what Redis removes under memory pressure; persistence controls what can be recovered after a restart or failure. Redis describes RDB point-in-time snapshots and AOF change logging, with different recovery and resource trade-offs. Select and configure persistence against your recovery objectives, and verify the behavior for your Redis version and deployment in the Redis persistence documentation. Do not assume that enabling persistence makes an evictable cache key permanent, or that cache data necessarily needs the same recovery guarantees as application data.

2. Letting expiration and hot keys amplify load

Prevent synchronized misses when popular keys expire

TTL (time to live) limits how long a key remains available. For cache entries, that is a freshness and memory-management choice—not an automatic guarantee that the cached value stays consistent with its source. If many requests depend on one popular key and it expires during a traffic spike, concurrent requests can all miss and query the primary database. That coordinated burst is a cache stampede.

To reduce the risk, decide how stale a value may be and what the application should do while a replacement is being fetched. Depending on freshness requirements, options include serving a bounded-stale value, coordinating refresh work so one request repopulates the key, or using another application-specific stampede control. These approaches trade freshness, complexity, and load differently; choose based on what the application can safely serve. Redis outlines the cache-aside pattern and related considerations in its cache-aside guide.

Also inspect whether related popular keys expire together. A synchronized expiration pattern can concentrate misses even if each key has a reasonable TTL on its own. Redis’s keyspace documentation explains key expiration behavior; use TTLs as an intentional freshness policy and plan for the work triggered by an expired entry.

Find and manage hot keys

A hot key receives a disproportionate share of requests and can concentrate work on one shard. This can make a cluster appear healthy overall while the shard serving that key is under pressure. Redis’s observability guidance notes that an application-local cache may mitigate a read-only hot key. That can reduce repeated Redis reads, but adds a freshness and invalidation decision: decide how stale local copies may be and how changes reach them.

Investigate access patterns rather than guessing from total request volume. Compare per-shard CPU and request latency, and check hit ratio and evictions alongside application-level latency. A mitigation that helps a read-only key may not fit a key that changes frequently or requires immediate consistency.

3. Choosing latency-heavy command patterns

Avoid production keyspace scans with KEYS

Redis identifies KEYS in production as a very common source of latency from slow commands. A command that examines a large keyspace can delay other work; the impact depends on the keyspace size, workload, and deployment. Avoid using it as routine production traversal or discovery logic. If an operational task needs to inspect keys, choose an approach appropriate to the specific Redis version and service, and account for its effect on live traffic.

Diagnose the full request path

“Why is Redis slow in production?” is not answered by server latency alone. A user-facing request can also be delayed by application work, network time, retries, database fallback after misses, and contention elsewhere in the system. Redis’s monitoring guidance distinguishes Redis server latency from application latency and recommends looking at relevant metrics together.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Inspect server-side latency and slow commands to identify work Redis itself is taking too long to complete.
  • Compare request latency across shards and examine shard CPU for concentrated load.
  • Track cache hit ratio, misses, memory use, and evictions to see whether cache behavior is shifting work elsewhere.
  • Correlate Redis metrics with application request latency and source-database load; a fast Redis response does not rule out a slow end-to-end request.

Use measurements to identify the bottleneck before changing the data model or adding a cache layer. Command cost and impact vary with the workload and keyspace, so a metric or threshold from a particular Redis product should not be treated as a universal limit for every deployment.
