If Windows’ built-in tools leave you switching between windows, wrestling with file operations, or wishing for more playback controls, three free, open-source apps address those pain points in different ways: Microsoft PowerToys, Double Commander, and mpv. They are not universal replacements, and their strengths are workflow-specific—not the result of a head-to-head benchmark.
Which built-in Windows friction are you trying to fix?
This lineup covers three different jobs rather than three versions of the same app. PowerToys adds utilities across Windows, Double Commander offers a two-pane approach to file management, and mpv provides configurable media playback with a deliberately minimal interface. The right choice depends on whether you want more system-wide shortcuts, more efficient file work, or more control over playback.
| App | Best fit | Distinguishing capability | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft PowerToys | People who want extra Windows-wide utilities | Window layouts, key remapping, a launcher, bulk renaming, previews, and File Explorer add-ons | Preview handlers can override others, and Microsoft reports an Outlook incompatibility with the PDF preview handler. |
| Double Commander | People who regularly move, compare, search, or rename many files | Two side-by-side file panels, plus search, archive handling, tabs, and batch renaming | Its dense interface may be unnecessary for casual file browsing. |
| mpv | Technically comfortable users who want playback and rendering control | Broad format and subtitle support, scripting, several video-output options, and hardware-decoding APIs | It has no conventional full GUI; the on-screen controller is minimal. |
1. Microsoft PowerToys adds utilities across Windows
Microsoft describes PowerToys as “a set of free, open-source utilities designed to help power users and developers get more out of Windows.” Rather than replacing one built-in app, the suite adds optional tools for common desktop workflows. Its current documentation lists FancyZones for custom window layouts, Keyboard Manager for remapping keys, PowerToys Run as a quick launcher, PowerRename for bulk renaming, Peek for previews, and File Explorer add-ons.

You can use the utilities you need without treating the suite as an all-or-nothing replacement for Windows features.

Where PowerToys stands out
- Window layouts: FancyZones lets you define layouts for arranging app windows.
- Keyboard workflows: Keyboard Manager can remap keys, while PowerToys Run provides a quick way to launch items.
- Repeated file tasks: PowerRename is designed for bulk renaming.
- File previews: File Explorer add-ons extend previews and thumbnails to formats such as SVG, PDF, Markdown, and source-code files. Microsoft says the preview pane can show source files across more than 150 extensions.
PowerToys preview-handler caveat
Microsoft warns that enabling PowerToys preview handlers overrides other preview handlers. It also reports an incompatibility between Outlook and the PDF preview handler. If you rely on another app’s previews or use Outlook, consider that trade-off before enabling the relevant add-on.
PowerToys is open source, but Microsoft’s documentation says the application logs basic diagnostic telemetry. Open source should not be mistaken for telemetry-free.

2. Double Commander makes file operations a two-pane job
Double Commander is a free, cross-platform, open-source file manager built around two panels side by side. Instead of repeatedly navigating back and forth between folders, you can keep two locations visible while copying or organizing files. That layout is particularly useful when handling many files or working across multiple directories.
Tools for heavier file work
The project lists an internal text editor and viewer, full-text search, archive handling, plugin support, tabs, and a multi-rename tool. It also supports FTP-family protocols and SSH/SCP/SFTP. Together with the two-pane layout, those features make Double Commander a more specialized option for searching, transferring, comparing, and renaming files.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Its interface is denser than many people need for everyday browsing. If you only open folders and move an occasional document, Windows File Explorer may be simpler. Double Commander is better understood as an alternative for people who routinely manage substantial or repetitive file work—not as an obligatory Explorer replacement. Windows Central likewise characterizes it as a complement to File Explorer in its editorial roundup of free open-source apps for Windows 11.
3. mpv offers flexible playback with a minimal interface
mpv is a free, open-source, cross-platform media player. Its project overview describes support for a wide variety of media formats, codecs, and subtitle types, along with scripting, OpenGL, Vulkan, and D3D11 video output, and hardware-decoding APIs. These options make it appealing if you value control over playback and rendering and are comfortable configuring a player.

Know what “minimal” means before choosing mpv
mpv’s project says it “strives for minimalism and provides no real GUI” beyond a small on-screen controller for basic control. That can suit someone who wants a configurable player and does not need a conventional app interface. If you expect a polished window full of menus and controls, mpv may feel less approachable than a traditional media player.

How to replace only the Windows defaults you want
Installing a new app does not automatically change every file association. Microsoft’s instructions for Windows default apps are to use Settings and select associations individually:
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the file type or link type you want to change, then select the app to use for it.
- Alternatively, choose an app on the Default apps page and configure the file and link types it supports.
- Change only the associations you want; leave the others assigned to their current apps.
These steps follow Microsoft Support’s instructions for changing default apps in Windows. The exact apps shown for a file type depend on what is installed and supports that type.
How to choose among the three
- Choose PowerToys if you want a broad set of optional Windows utilities for layouts, shortcuts, launching, renaming, or previews.
- Choose Double Commander if two active file panes and tools for searching, archiving, transferring, or batch renaming fit your regular work.
- Choose mpv if playback flexibility matters more to you than a conventional graphical interface.
These are use-case recommendations, not measured rankings. The apps address different gaps, and you can install one without adopting the others.
