The Google resources’ scope descriptions here are attributed to LinuxLinks’ article, last updated May 22, 2022; the linked Google XML documents were not independently readable for verification. Treat those descriptions as a guide to choosing what to consult, rather than confirmation that the documents remain current.
1. Learn Vimscript the Hard Way: a practical starting point
Learn Vimscript the Hard Way is the most structured choice of the three. It is not a tutorial for learning Vim editing from scratch: the official book page expects readers to be comfortable editing text in Vim and to understand basic terms such as buffer, window, and insert mode.
The material moves from commands for customizing vimrc to Vimscript as a language, including variables, comparisons, and functions, then applies that knowledge by building a sample plugin. That progression makes it useful if your goal is to understand how configuration grows into scripting and a small project.

The HTML edition is free to read online. The official page says, “The book will always be free to read online.” It also lists paid ebook formats (PDF, EPUB, and MOBI), paperback, and hardcover editions. The page states copyright 2013 by Steve Losh; current prices, stock, and merchant availability may change.
The book’s table of contents includes historical plugin-layout references, including Pathogen. Don’t treat those specific implementation details as current recommendations without checking up-to-date Vim documentation.

2. Google Vimscript Style Guide: a conventions reference
LinuxLinks characterizes the Google Vimscript Style Guide as the shorter, abbreviated conventions document. Its description includes string and regular-expression conventions, potentially dangerous or fragile commands, exception handling, and guidance for plugin layout, functions, commands, autocommands, mappings, and settings.
Use a style guide when you need a compact reference while writing or reviewing code. LinuxLinks also reports a CC-BY 3.0 license for this guide; because the linked XML page could not be independently checked, confirm the original document’s current license and recommendations before relying on them.

3. Google Vimscript Guide: more explanation and rationale
LinuxLinks presents the Google Vimscript Guide as the in-depth companion to the style guide. Its description says it explains the reasoning behind the shorter recommendations and discusses writing Vimscript safely.
That makes it the better fit when a convention is not self-explanatory and you want context rather than just a rule. As with the style guide, this scope is reported by LinuxLinks’ article, last updated in 2022; the linked Google document was not independently verified here.

VimL is the scripting language associated with Vim. In practical terms, learning it can help you move from editing vimrc settings to writing functions and plugins, but the three resources serve different stages of that work.
