For International Coffee Day 2026, the three recommendations in Cat Ellis’s TechRadar feature suit different priorities: the Philips Baristina for a compact, simpler route from beans to espresso; the Philips Café Aromis 8000 Series for push-button drink variety; and the Sage/Breville Barista Touch Impress with Cold Extraction for guided hands-on control. Ellis is an SCA-certified barista, but the feature is an editorial recommendation, not a controlled head-to-head test.
Which machine suits your coffee routine?
| Machine | Best fit | Workflow | Milk drinks | Cold coffee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Philips Baristina | A tighter budget, limited space, or a move from capsules to whole beans | Automates grinding, tamping, and extraction after you load beans and water and insert the filter handle | The original model has no steam wand; a standalone-frother bundle or Baristina Latte variant changes the setup | Not identified as a cold-extraction option in Ellis’s feature |
| Philips Café Aromis 8000 Series | People who want varied drinks with minimal manual work | Fully automatic, with touchscreen controls, customization, and HomeID app profiles | Separate hot- and cold-milk carafes are described | Described as extracting with water from the tank, rather than pouring hot espresso over ice |
| Sage/Breville Barista Touch Impress with Cold Extraction | People who want guidance while learning and some control over preparation | Semi-automatic; users can adjust dose, grind size, tamp pressure, and brew temperature, with machine feedback | Manual or automatic milk steaming | Described as offering cold extraction |
These distinctions are based on Ellis’s October 1, 2026 TechRadar feature, not independently verified product specifications. For full product details and the author’s recommendations, see the TechRadar feature.
Philips Baristina: the compact, simpler entry point
Ellis recommends the Baristina for someone keeping an eye on cost or switching from capsules to whole beans. Its described workflow is straightforward: add beans and water, insert the filter handle, and start the machine. The Baristina then grinds, tamps, and extracts, reducing the number of manual steps between whole beans and espresso.
Its open construction is another practical point in Ellis’s assessment: she says it is easier to keep clean. The important trade-off is milk preparation. The original Baristina has no steam wand, so it cannot make steamed-milk drinks such as lattes or cappuccinos on its own. Ellis notes a bundle with a standalone frother and a separate Baristina Latte variant with an integrated steam wand. Check the exact model and bundle in the listing before buying; the names do not guarantee that every configuration includes milk equipment.

Philips Café Aromis 8000 Series: variety at the touch of a button
The fully automatic Aromis is the choice in Ellis’s feature for people seeking a broad menu with little hands-on preparation. She describes hot and cold drink options, customization, a touchscreen, and HomeID app profiles that can tailor settings. Separate carafes for hot and cold milk are also part of her account of the machine.
Ellis distinguishes its cold drinks from simply pouring hot espresso over ice: the machine is described as extracting with water from the tank. That difference may matter if you specifically want cold extraction rather than an iced drink made with hot coffee. The Aromis is characterized as expensive compared with the other recommendations, with its range of features presented as the reason to consider that higher tier. No current price is established here, so check a live retailer listing for the exact model and offer.

Sage/Breville Barista Touch Impress with Cold Extraction: guided control
The Touch Impress is the semi-automatic recommendation for people who want help with technique without giving up every decision to the machine. Ellis describes controls and feedback around dose, grind size, tamp pressure, and brew temperature. Its Puck Impress system tamps with a lever pull, while milk can be steamed manually or automatically.

How to choose between the three
- Prioritize a simpler bean-to-cup workflow and compactness: consider the Baristina, while accounting for its original model’s lack of a steam wand if milk drinks are important.
- Want an automated menu and app-based personalization: the Aromis is the feature-rich option, with a higher relative price tier and cold extraction described by Ellis.
- Want to learn and adjust the process: the semi-automatic Touch Impress offers the clearest balance of feedback and user control.
- Want cold coffee: the Aromis and Touch Impress are the two machines Ellis explicitly associates with cold extraction; her feature does not identify the Baristina as one.
Ellis’s feature does not establish a universal winner or compare all three in a controlled test. Its recommendations are best read as a priority-based shortlist. Product specifications, included accessories, regional variants, prices, and availability should be confirmed against the exact current listing before purchase.
