For prerecorded loops, choose a managed cloud streaming service or run encoder software on a cloud VM; live camera feeds may also work with a compatible standalone hardware encoder. YouTube still requires you to set up the broadcast in Live Control Room and connect the encoder with its server URL and stream key.
Choose where the encoder will run

A managed service may reduce server administration, while a cloud VM gives you more control but requires maintenance. YouTube’s verified encoder list can help you investigate hardware, but YouTube notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. Confirm that a device suits your specific source and workflow.
Set up a continuous YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming early. YouTube says enabling a first live stream may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day you plan to launch.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Scheduling can create a watch page and allow viewers to receive reminders.
- Prepare your video source. For a prerecorded loop, make sure your chosen service or encoder supports the file and playback pattern. For a live camera or external feed, confirm that the encoder supports the source.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key in the selected encoder or service. Treat the key like a password: share it only with the provider or machine you chose, and reset it if it is compromised.
- Start and verify the feed. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live as instructed. Check the video, audio, destination, visibility, and title before leaving the stream unattended.
- Check unattended operation. Before depending on the setup, review the provider or device’s current restart and reconnect behavior, service limits, and recovery process. A remote encoder moves failure points off your PC; it does not eliminate them.
What changes when you move encoding off your PC?
Your personal computer can be off because another system is running the encoder and sending the video to YouTube. With managed cloud streaming, the provider operates that system. With a cloud VM, you operate the remote machine. With hardware encoding, the device sends a supported live input directly.
In each case, the stream still depends on the encoder, its connection to YouTube, the YouTube service, and the provider or hardware continuing to work. Check the chosen option’s current terms and status, and make a plan for what you will do if the feed stops. Do not assume a service will automatically recover within a particular time unless its current documentation supports that claim.

YouTube stream and archive limits
YouTube’s encoder guide describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube’s setup uses a Live server URL and stream key; for scheduled streams, the creator starts the encoder, waits for a preview, and then clicks Go live.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will be available as one complete archived video. Plan your archive needs around YouTube’s published limits.

Before choosing a cloud service or encoder
- Confirm that it supports your source, file formats, resolution, and intended stream duration.
- Check current pricing, storage or bandwidth charges, regional availability, support, and service status.
- Find out how it handles restarts, disconnections, and recovery, and test the workflow before relying on it.
- Check how it accesses your YouTube channel and protect your stream key or account authorization.
- Review YouTube’s current requirements and policies for your channel and content.
FAQ
Can I keep a YouTube livestream running while my computer is off?
Yes, if another system is encoding and sending the stream. Common options are a managed cloud streaming service, a cloud VM running encoder software, or compatible standalone hardware for a supported live input.

Do I need a stream key?
YouTube’s documented encoder setup uses a Live server URL and stream key. Enter them only in the encoder or provider you have selected, and protect the key as a credential.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour stream as one video?
Do not count on that. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so plan around that limit rather than assuming a 24-hour stream will be archived as one complete video.

Should I use a cloud service or a hardware encoder?
For prerecorded loops, compare managed cloud streaming with a cloud VM. For a live camera or external feed, hardware may be suitable if the exact device supports your input and unattended workflow. Verify the current capabilities and terms before choosing.
