A laptop running continuously for a 30-day month uses 0.72 kWh for every watt of average power drawn at the wall. If it averages 20–60 W, that is 14.4–43.2 kWh. Using a specific Chandigarh domestic-tariff schedule as an illustration, the energy-charge portion would be about ₹40–₹233—not a nationwide price or a complete bill.

The best estimate comes from measuring the laptop and charger together during representative playback, then applying your household’s applicable marginal electricity rate. A charger’s printed wattage is its maximum rating, not the laptop’s average draw.

How much electricity does a laptop use in a month if it runs all day?

A 30-day month has 720 hours. For a laptop drawing an average of W watts at the wall:

  • Daily energy: average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
  • 30-day energy: average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per month.
  • Energy-charge estimate: monthly kWh × applicable marginal rate per kWh.

Each 1 W of average draw therefore adds 0.72 kWh over 30 days. The figures below are arithmetic scenarios, not measurements, typical-laptop claims, or YouTube-streaming benchmarks.

Assumed average wall draw Energy per day Energy per 30 days At ₹2.75/kWh At ₹5.40/kWh
20 W 0.48 kWh 14.4 kWh About ₹40 About ₹78
40 W 0.96 kWh 28.8 kWh About ₹79 About ₹156
60 W 1.44 kWh 43.2 kWh About ₹119 About ₹233

The two example rates come from the CEA’s 2025 compilation of a Chandigarh domestic schedule, effective 1 August 2024. That schedule lists energy charges of ₹2.75/kWh for 0–150 kWh/month, ₹4.80/kWh for 151–400 kWh/month, and ₹5.40/kWh above 400 kWh/month. These are rates in one schedule, not an India-wide average; the applicable band and bill calculation depend on the household’s consumption and tariff structure. See the CEA compilation.

How to estimate your own electricity cost in India

  1. Find your applicable rate. Check your latest electricity bill or the current tariff schedule from your state regulator or DISCOM. Confirm the consumer category, billing period, energy-charge bands and any applicable adjustments or subsidy. Retail tariffs and subsidy arrangements vary by place and consumer class. The Ministry of Power describes this framework in its 2026 overview of electricity financial sustainability and affordability.
  2. Measure wall draw during realistic use. Measure the laptop and its charger together while YouTube playback is running, with your usual screen brightness and network conditions. A suitably rated plug-in energy meter or energy-monitoring smart plug may show average watts or accumulated kWh. This is practical measurement guidance, not an endorsement of a particular device.
  3. Calculate from the reading. If the meter gives average watts, use the formulas above. If it records kWh directly, use the measured energy for the period and scale it to your expected runtime if needed.
  4. Apply the marginal energy rate. Multiply the added kWh by the rate that applies to the additional consumption. Then consider other bill items separately rather than treating the energy-charge result as the full increase in your bill.
  5. If you cannot measure, show scenarios. Use more than one assumed wattage, label each as an assumption, and avoid implying that any one value is a universal laptop average.

A charger rating cannot substitute for a measurement: it describes the charger’s maximum output, not how much power the computer draws on average during playback.

Why laptop power use varies

Actual draw depends on the laptop and its workload. Continuous video playback keeps the computer awake and network-active; screen brightness, power mode, energy-saver settings, and sleep or display settings can also affect use. Microsoft identifies these as relevant Windows 11 power settings, but does not publish a universal wattage for 24/7 YouTube playback. Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings guide explains the controls.

Battery-life estimates do not establish wall power for this scenario. Microsoft’s Surface battery testing mixes active use and modern standby, and notes that battery life varies with settings and usage. Those battery-life figures should not be converted into a 24/7 streaming electricity estimate. Microsoft’s Surface battery testing notes.

Is the cost just the energy charge?

No. The table estimates only energy charges using illustrative rates. A household’s full bill can also reflect fixed charges, duties, adjustments, tariff slabs, consumer category, and subsidies. The actual incremental bill depends on the local schedule and how the extra consumption affects the household’s billing band; without the state or UT, DISCOM, category, consumption, and adjustments, an exact household total cannot be established.
