IEEE Spectrum’s April 2020 “Top 10 High Tech Cars” was an editorial selection, not a measured ranking or a current buying guide. Its ten vehicles showcased very different kinds of technology—from hybrid and electric drivetrains to driver assistance, connected cabins, chassis engineering and performance data recording. Here is what the list included and what its claims mean in context.
How to read the 2020 list
The selection appeared in IEEE Spectrum’s April 2020 print issue and covered vehicles already in showrooms or expected within the following few months. It did not apply a single technology score to comparable cars: a converted vintage roadster, a hybrid SUV and a high-performance electric sedan bring different kinds of technology to the comparison.
Specifications, prices, feature availability and range figures below are historical claims from the period article, not verified current specifications. Trim level matters for several features. In particular, an assistance system is not the same as autonomous driving: Alfa Romeo/Stellantis’ contemporaneous MY2020 description of Level 2 systems said they control steering, acceleration and braking only in specific conditions, while the driver remains responsible for monitoring. Its statement concerned the Giulia and Stelvio, not every car in this list. Alfa Romeo/Stellantis’ MY2020 description
The 10 cars and their technology
1. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8: performance data and a new layout
The C8’s mid-engine layout was a major engineering change for the Corvette, paired with an adjustable chassis and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Its onboard Performance Data Recorder could save video alongside driving telemetry for later review. IEEE Spectrum’s 2020 article gave a period base price of $59,995, 495 hp and a claimed 0–60 mph time of 2.9 seconds; those figures are not current buying specifications.

2. Polestar 1: plug-in hybrid with independently controlled rear motors
The Polestar 1 combined a gasoline engine and integrated starter-generator driving the front wheels with two electric motors at the rear. Independent control of those rear motors enabled torque vectoring, directing power between the rear wheels to influence handling. IEEE Spectrum described its electric range as approximately 55 miles and listed a $156,500 base price, alongside a planned limited production run. These are historical article-era claims.
3. Hyundai Sonata: driver aids, a digital key and trim-specific features
The roundup highlighted SmartSense driver-assistance features as standard on the base Sonata, including forward-collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control and a driver-attention warning. The SEL added a blind-spot camera view in the instrument cluster. A 10-inch infotainment display and remote parking were associated with the Limited trim. The article also described a digital key using an Android app with Bluetooth Low Energy and NFC. It reported a period base price of $24,330; prices and equipment have since changed.

4. Porsche Taycan: 800-volt architecture and fast charging
The Taycan’s 800-volt electrical architecture was the focus of its entry. IEEE Spectrum’s author described a session on a 350-kW charger that took the battery from 8 to 80 percent in 20 minutes. That is a reported charging session under the article’s conditions, not a universal charge-time promise; actual charging depends on the vehicle, charger and conditions. The article also discussed energy recuperation and chassis technology. Its period range comparisons included WLTP and U.S. EPA estimates, which use different test systems and should not be read as like-for-like current ratings.
5. Audi RS Q8: electrified support for chassis systems
The RS Q8 paired a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with electromechanical anti-roll bars, adaptive air suspension, all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. Its digital cabin included Virtual Cockpit and MMI screens. An optional connected app could unlock and start the vehicle, according to the period article. Its performance and range estimates were article-era figures, not present-day specifications.

- Revell Model Kit #14576, Skill Level 4, Contains 74-Parts, Recommended for ages 12 and up
- High-rise four-wheel-drive suspension. Detailed small-block Chevy V-8 engine.
- Old-school spoke “wagon” wheels with oversize off-road tires.
- All-new decal sheet.
- Molded in white and clear with soft black tires. Paint and glue required(not included).
6. Mini Cooper SE: electric city-car technology
The all-electric Cooper SE was presented as a compact urban car, with a 32.6-kWh battery, selectable regenerative-braking settings and a 110-mile range figure. IEEE Spectrum also recounted a separate drive that suggested a higher distance in slow traffic; that observation is not a range guarantee. The article said a full charge on a basic Level 2 charger took four hours, a period estimate that depends on charging equipment and conditions.
7. Electric GT’s converted Fiat 124 Spider: a niche electric restoration
This entry was a 1982 Fiat 124 Spider converted by Electric GT, not a new factory model. The company’s plug-and-play electric-drive system used repurposed Tesla batteries; the example was said to have an 85-mile range. IEEE Spectrum listed conversion-system prices starting at $32,500 and exceeding $80,000 at publication, and noted that systems were engineered for specific cars. It is best understood as a specialized restoration route, not an ordinary new-car alternative.

8. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: predictive efficiency and electric all-wheel drive
The redesigned hybrid system used an electric rear motor to provide all-wheel drive. The article also described Predictive Efficient Drive, which used driving habits, GPS route and traffic information to optimize battery use. IEEE Spectrum’s author reported 41 mpg combined in their test and contrasted that result with the EPA figure. The 41 mpg is the author’s test result, not a universal owner outcome or a current rating.
9. Ford Escape Hybrid: assistance and connected-cabin options
The Escape Hybrid was available with front- or all-wheel drive. Features discussed included self-parking, evasive-steering assist, wireless phone charging, an available head-up display and FordPass Connect functions; equipment depended on version. The article also described a standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi system. These details describe the period model and its offerings, not the current Escape lineup.

The list’s technology spans several separate dimensions rather than one universal measure of advancement:
- Electrification: battery-electric power in the Mini Cooper SE and converted Fiat; plug-in hybrid power in the Polestar 1; and conventional hybrid systems in the RAV4 and Escape.
- Driver support and parking: collision avoidance, cruise, lane support, blind-spot visibility and parking assistance, with availability sometimes tied to a trim or version.
- Cabin and connectivity: digital displays, a phone-based digital key, remote app functions, Wi-Fi and a head-up display.
- Chassis and performance: torque vectoring, adaptive suspension, four-wheel steering, regenerative braking and driving-data recording.
- Charging and efficiency: high-voltage architecture and fast DC charging for the Taycan, plus energy management strategies in hybrid models.
These distinctions matter: a technology aimed at energy use cannot be ranked directly against one intended to improve handling or convenience without a defined scoring method.
This was not an awards-based ranking
J.D. Power’s separate 2020 U.S. Tech Experience Index named category winners rather than reproducing IEEE Spectrum’s ten-car selection. Its convenience category listed the Cadillac CT5 and Subaru Ascent for rear-seat reminder/camera rear-view mirror; emerging automation named the Cadillac Escalade and Genesis G70 (tie) and Chevrolet Camaro for rear cross-traffic warning; and infotainment/connectivity named the Cadillac XT5 and Kia Sportage for navigation live traffic. J.D. Power said it issued no energy and sustainability technology awards because eligibility criteria were not met. The results provide a separate category-based view, not independent validation of the IEEE list. J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Tech Experience Index
