For most buyers comparing similarly priced machines in similar condition, choose the MacBook Air with M1 (2020). Apple lists it as compatible with macOS Tahoe 26; the 2018 Intel MacBook Air is not on that current compatibility list. That gives the M1 a clear current-major-release support advantage, although Apple has not specified a future support end date. The 2018 model can still make sense if it costs substantially less, has a healthy battery, and meets your software needs.
What is different between the 2018 and M1 MacBook Air?
| Decision factor | MacBook Air (2018) | MacBook Air with M1 (2020) | What it means when buying used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Processor | Dual-core 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 with Intel UHD Graphics 617, according to Apple’s 2018 technical specifications. | Apple M1 chip, according to Apple’s M1 technical specifications. | Check that the programs and accessories you depend on work with the specific model. These specifications alone do not establish a measured performance ratio. |
| Display | 13.3-inch Retina IPS display, 2560 × 1600. | 13.3-inch Retina display. | The screen size and general display class are similar; inspect the actual panel for damage or defects. |
| Memory | 8 GB onboard as standard; configurable to 16 GB. | Configurations vary. | Verify the offered computer’s actual memory. Treat it as a purchase-time specification, not a casual upgrade. |
| Ports | Two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. | Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports. | Either may need a hub or adapter for USB-A, HDMI, or SD devices. Check your peripherals before buying. |
| macOS Tahoe 26 compatibility | Not listed by Apple as compatible. | Listed by Apple as compatible. | As of October 4, 2026, this is the M1’s clearest support advantage. It does not establish how many future releases either model will receive. |
| Apple’s original battery estimate | Up to 12 hours wireless web browsing and up to 13 hours iTunes movie playback in Apple’s 2018 test, which used preproduction systems. | Up to 15 hours wireless web and up to 18 hours Apple TV movie playback in Apple’s 2020 test, which used preproduction systems and a specified configuration. | These are separate historical estimates under Apple test conditions, not directly comparable independent measurements or expected runtimes for used batteries. |
| Used-market value | May be the lower-cost choice, depending on the particular listing. | Generally the safer choice when price and condition are close. | No live market survey establishes a current fair price. Compare actual offers and condition rather than relying on a quoted market value. |
Both machines have two USB-C ports and 13.3-inch Retina displays, so basic screen size and port count are not decisive by themselves. The 2018 model is Intel-based; the M1 uses Apple silicon. Apple’s Tahoe 26 compatibility list includes the M1 MacBook Air but not the 2018 model. Being absent means the 2018 Air does not support this current major macOS release; it does not, on its own, say when security updates for earlier macOS versions end.
When should you buy the M1 MacBook Air?
Choose the M1 if you want the stronger current macOS compatibility position and the price, memory, storage, and condition are acceptable. If two machines are similarly well kept and similarly priced, the M1 is the more prudent used purchase. This is a recommendation based on Apple’s specifications and compatibility information, not a hands-on comparison or benchmark; it does not promise a particular number of additional years of support.

Before committing, check the exact unit’s memory and storage, because configurations can vary. Also confirm that any software or workflow you depend on is suitable for the M1 model rather than assuming that the processor label alone settles compatibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Retina display; 13.3-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology (2560x1600 native resolution)
- Apple M1 chip with 8 cores (4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), a 7-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine
- 8GB memory | 128GB SSD
- Backlit Magic Keyboard | Touch ID sensor | 720p FaceTime HD camera
- 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6 wireless networking, IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac compatible | Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology
When is the 2018 MacBook Air worth considering?
The 2018 model may be a reasonable budget purchase if the discount is compelling, its battery and overall condition are good, and its Intel platform meets your needs. It may also suit a buyer with a specific Intel-dependent requirement. Weigh that lower purchase cost against its lack of compatibility with macOS Tahoe 26 and the possibility that an older used battery will need attention.
There is no single price threshold established here: used prices depend on location, configuration, condition, and seller terms. Compare like-for-like listings rather than treating the 2018 as a bargain simply because it is older.

How to inspect a used MacBook Air before paying
- Confirm the model and configuration. Use Apple’s MacBook Air model-identification guide, then check the specific unit’s memory and storage in macOS. Do not assume the advertised configuration matches the computer being sold.
- Check battery cycle count and condition. Hold Option, open the Apple menu, choose System Information, then select Hardware > Power to find the cycle count. Apple’s battery cycle-count guidance lists a 1,000-cycle maximum for both the 2018 and M1 MacBook Air. Apple says, “Knowing how many charge cycles your battery has, and how many are left, can help you determine when to replace your battery.” A low count does not guarantee a healthy battery in an older computer; inspect its reported condition and, where possible, test it unplugged.
- Test the hardware. Inspect the display, keyboard, trackpad, ports, and charger. Check for physical damage and verify that the included accessories are the ones you expect.
- Confirm ownership and sale terms. Make sure the seller can transfer the computer for your use, ask about activation or ownership status, and review return terms and seller reputation before paying.
- Ask about repair availability for the exact unit. Apple’s service guidance describes general vintage and obsolete categories: vintage products are those Apple stopped distributing for sale more than five and less than seven years ago, and obsolete products are those stopped for more than seven years. Service and parts depend on availability; Apple also describes a possible extended battery-only repair period for Mac laptops. Model year alone does not establish the current classification or whether a needed part is available, so check with Apple or an authorized provider.
Make the decision on the actual listing
- Pick the M1 when the two offers are close in price and condition, or when current macOS compatibility is a priority.
- Consider the 2018 when it is substantially cheaper, the battery and hardware check out, and Intel compatibility matters for your needs.
- Walk away or negotiate if the seller cannot verify configuration, the battery appears unhealthy, important ports or input devices fail, or return and ownership terms are unclear.
