There is no single “best” design tool for every job, and the available evidence does not establish that any of these tools increases productivity by 10×. The useful choice depends on whether you are designing a digital product, running a workshop, making marketing graphics, illustrating, compositing images, or laying out pages. This guide groups 20 options by that work so you can shortlist tools without treating a subjective productivity claim as a measured result.

How to choose a design tool

Start with the work you need to finish, then check how the tool fits your team, devices, and output. For collaborative product work, look for multiplayer editing, comments, reusable components, prototyping, and a clear developer handoff. For quick marketing content, templates and export options may matter more than interface-design features. For illustration, confirm tablet compatibility and stylus support before buying hardware.

  • Team workflow: Check collaboration, shared libraries or components, version history, and handoff features.
  • Output: Decide whether you need a prototype, production-ready interface specification, social graphic, editable vector, layered image, or multi-page publication.
  • Platform: Browser-based, desktop, and tablet workflows are not interchangeable. Illustrator for iPad and Procreate are tablet-oriented; Procreate is an iPad app.
  • Cost and access: Compare current plans, included seats, and feature limits on the vendor’s pricing page. Plan structures and AI allowances can change.

The tools below are grouped by intended use, not ranked. Product capabilities are described by their vendors; the sources do not provide independent head-to-head tests or measured productivity gains.

1. Figma Design

Figma describes its design product as a place to make, share, and test designs for websites, mobile apps, and other digital products. Its design page highlights multiplayer files, comments, and cursor chat; its comparison materials also describe reusable components, prototyping, and branching or version control. Explore Figma Design.

2. Figma Dev Mode

Dev Mode is intended to support design-to-code handoff. It is most relevant when designers and developers need to inspect a design and coordinate implementation, rather than when the main need is freeform brainstorming. Figma lists products and seat types separately, so check the current plan details before assuming a particular team member’s access or AI allowance. Check Figma plans and pricing.

3. Adobe XD

Adobe XD appears in Figma’s vendor-authored comparison as an option for interface design, but that same comparison reports that major updates are not planned. Treat that status as Figma’s characterization, not an independent product-status assessment, and verify Adobe’s current support and availability before choosing it for a new project. Read Figma’s comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Mockplus

Figma’s comparison identifies Mockplus as a prototyping option. It may be worth evaluating when a clickable prototype is the main deliverable; the cited comparison does not establish that it is a replacement for every part of a full product-design workflow. See Figma’s comparison.

Tools for whiteboards, workshops, and ideation

Whiteboards help teams collect ideas, map processes, and plan together. They are not the same thing as a production interface file, even when both products come from the same vendor.

7. Mural

The same Figma-authored comparison positions Mural for structured workshops. Consider it when facilitation and workshop activities are central to the task, and assess its current features directly before making a team-wide choice. Read Figma’s comparison.

This is Adobe’s product positioning, not a comparative test. Explore Adobe Creative Cloud apps.

Tools for vector illustration and drawing

Vector tools are useful when artwork needs to remain editable and scale cleanly. Tablet drawing adds a different consideration: the device and stylus become part of the workflow.

11. Affinity

20. Canva for template-based social assets

What the productivity claim does—and does not—mean

There is no independent productivity statistic or comparative test in the cited material showing that these tools make designers 10× more productive. Figma’s own site reports that 95% of Fortune 500 companies used Figma, based on data from March 2025; that vendor-published adoption figure measures neither productivity nor comparative quality. See Figma’s design page.

Figma’s page also presents a testimonial from Adam Morris, Head of Product Design at The Economist, saying that working in one place helps with context switching and costs and is “mostly about speed and ease.” That is a customer’s qualitative account published by the vendor, not independent evidence of a quantified gain. Read the testimonial on Figma’s site.
