Use 5 GHz for a compatible device near the router when higher potential speed matters. Choose 2.4 GHz when a device is farther away, separated by walls or floors, or only supports that band. Neither frequency guarantees a particular internet speed: distance, interference, equipment and your internet service all affect performance.
2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz Wi‑Fi at a glance
| Factor | 2.4 GHz | 5 GHz | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Generally reaches farther. | Generally has shorter range. | Try 2.4 GHz for distant rooms or when 5 GHz reception is weak. Walls and floors can affect either band. NETGEAR and Google Fiber Help describe these general differences. |
| Potential speed | Generally slower. | Generally faster. | For a nearby compatible device that needs more throughput, try 5 GHz. This is a tendency, not a guaranteed speed. NETGEAR |
| Congestion | Often busier because many devices and household technologies use it. | Often less congested, though local conditions vary. | If performance is poor, consider nearby networks and interference as well as the band. NETGEAR |
| Compatibility | Supported by many older and lower-bandwidth devices; some IoT products and printers require it. | Not supported by every device. | Check the device maker’s specifications if the device cannot find or join a 5 GHz network. Google Fiber Help |
| Band selection | A dual-band router may use one network name and steer devices between bands automatically, or it may show separate names. | Router and client behavior varies by model. Google Nest Help | |
These are qualitative comparisons, not universal household speed or distance figures. Actual performance depends on the router and client capabilities, distance, barriers, interference and internet service. See the FCC’s household broadband guidance for practical ways to improve connectivity.
How to choose a band for each device
- Check compatibility first. If a device supports only 2.4 GHz, connect it to that band. Some smart-home devices and printers are limited to 2.4 GHz, so consult the manufacturer’s specifications. Google Fiber Help
- Account for the device’s location. For a device in a distant room or behind walls or floors, 2.4 GHz is a sensible starting point because it generally has greater coverage. NETGEAR; Google Fiber Help
- Try 5 GHz for nearby, high-throughput use. A compatible phone, laptop or streaming device near the router may benefit from its higher potential speed. NETGEAR
- Leave automatic band selection enabled if your router manages it. Some systems use a single network name and direct devices to a band automatically. The router and device make that choice according to their own rules, which vary by model. Google Nest Help
Why your router may show one Wi‑Fi name or two
Some routers expose separate network names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, letting you choose which one a device joins. Others use one name across both bands and steer devices automatically. Google says supported Google and Nest Wifi systems direct devices to a band and use one network name; other routers may present separate networks. Google Nest Help

A single name does not mean only one band is active. If you need to connect a device to a particular band, check your router’s model-specific settings and documentation rather than assuming every router offers the same controls.

What to check if a device will not connect to 5 GHz
- Confirm the device supports 5 GHz. Not all Wi‑Fi clients do; check the device specifications. Google Fiber Help
- Move it closer to the router temporarily. If it connects nearby but not in its usual location, coverage may be the issue.
- Check how your router presents its bands. A device may see separate network names, or the router may manage selection under a shared name. Follow instructions for your router and device models. Google Nest Help
If Wi‑Fi performance is still poor
Changing bands is only one possible fix. Distance, walls, floors, interference, router placement, device capabilities and the current internet connection can all affect results. The FCC suggests placing the router centrally; an extender or mesh system may help distribute a signal, while Ethernet can provide a direct connection and reduce Wi‑Fi congestion where practical. These are options, not requirements to buy new equipment. FCC household broadband guidance
