If a smart device will not join your 2.4 GHz mesh Wi-Fi, first confirm the device supports your router’s Wi-Fi security mode, then check which band your phone is using during setup. A shared Wi-Fi name does not guarantee that your phone, mesh system, and smart device are communicating on the same band. Work through compatibility and setup settings before changing mesh features or investigating interference.
Why a smart device can fail to connect to 2.4 GHz mesh Wi-Fi
Some smart-home devices support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Google notes that a phone may need to use 2.4 GHz while setting up a device with that limitation. The phone, smart device, and mesh system can otherwise end up on different bands even when the network name is shared. The setup app may also expect the phone to be connected in a particular way.
Wi-Fi security can be another barrier. Older devices may not work with WPA3 or a router’s WPA3 transition mode. A device can also have trouble with particular mesh roaming or band-management features, but those controls—and the right settings—depend on the router model.
Check the device and phone before changing router settings
Confirm the device’s Wi-Fi requirements
Look up the exact model in its manufacturer’s setup instructions. Check which Wi-Fi bands it supports and which security modes it accepts. Do not assume that a smart device supports 5 GHz, 6 GHz, or WPA3 just because your router does.

Connect the setup phone as directed
If the app passes the phone’s Wi-Fi details to the device, follow the device maker’s instructions about the phone’s connection. Google recommends manually connecting the phone to 2.4 GHz when setting up certain devices that do not support 5 or 6 GHz. A shared network name can make band selection less obvious; check your router’s app or interface for the phone’s current connection details.
If your mesh system offers a 2.4 GHz IoT network, its maker may recommend using that network for setup. The availability and steps are model-specific. Google’s band guidance for Nest Wifi, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google Wifi and its Seamless Setup troubleshooting can help with those product families.

Check band steering and dedicated IoT network options
Some routers manage band selection automatically through band steering. On supported systems, the manufacturer may advise temporarily disabling band steering or setting up a dedicated IoT network. These are not universal controls: menu names, availability, and behavior vary by router and firmware.
For example, TP-Link’s guidance for specified Deco systems recommends an IoT network for smart-device setup and discusses band steering for supported models. Its separate recommendations for EB810v, HB710, and HB410 apply to those listed models, not every mesh router. Follow the instructions for your exact system rather than applying another model’s menu path.

Make sure the Wi-Fi security mode is compatible
Check the router’s configured security mode and the smart device’s requirements. If an older device fails to connect to WPA3 or WPA3 transition mode, consult both manufacturers’ compatibility guidance. Google advises turning WPA3 off if legacy WPA2 devices have trouble in transition mode; that is a compatibility step, not a reason to weaken security without checking your situation.
If your router supports it, a separate IoT network or WPA2-Personal setting for that network may provide a compatible option. Linksys describes router-specific IoT connection guidance, while Wyze’s WPA3 troubleshooting addresses its devices. Use the strongest security mode supported by the router and all devices that need to join. Do not use an open network or obsolete WEP security as a workaround.

Try mesh-specific settings only when the model’s guidance points to them
Features intended to help clients roam between mesh points can interfere with a particular device’s setup or connection. TP-Link’s Deco FAQ, for example, suggests turning off Fast Roaming for certain connection problems and includes Fast Roaming and Beamforming in its recommendations. That advice is specific to Deco; it is not a general instruction for all mesh systems.

Check signal strength, congestion, and interference
If the device gets through setup but drops offline—or cannot connect despite compatible settings—temporarily move it closer to a mesh point. A stronger signal can help distinguish a coverage problem from a compatibility problem. Also consider whether nearby household equipment, such as a microwave or cordless phone, could be interfering with 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
Where your router maker offers channel or channel-width guidance, follow its instructions for your model. Microsoft notes that using 20 MHz rather than 40 MHz can help some older Wi-Fi adapters or drivers that have trouble with 40 MHz. A narrower channel can reduce maximum throughput, so treat it as a targeted troubleshooting option rather than a universal improvement. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance.
What to send support if setup still fails
Contact the smart-device maker and router or ISP support with enough detail to identify a compatibility or configuration issue. Include:
- The exact mesh system and smart-device model, plus router firmware version.
- The wording of the setup error and the step where it appears.
- The network band and security mode, if you can confirm them.
- Which settings you changed and the result of each attempt.
Google notes that router settings or a 2.4 GHz-only setup may be needed if its Home app does not find a device. If you have already checked the device requirements, phone band, and security compatibility, those details help support narrow down whether a model-specific mesh setting or signal issue remains.
