These 19 bootstrapped SaaS companies are useful starting points for studying software businesses, but the available evidence does not establish that they are all profitable. Ahrefs’ September 15, 2026 list ranks companies by growth in brand-name search demand—not by revenue, cash flow, or profit. Treat the names below as leads for case studies, not as proof of financial success.

What “profitable SaaS” means—and what this list can show

A SaaS business is profitable when its revenue exceeds its costs over a stated period, according to a defined accounting basis. A company’s funding history, search interest, revenue, and profitability are separate facts:

  • Bootstrapped describes a funding path; it does not establish that a business earns a profit.
  • Revenue is income from sales during a period. It does not account for all expenses.
  • MRR is monthly recurring revenue; ARR is annual recurring revenue, often calculated from recurring revenue. Neither is profit.
  • Brand-search growth can indicate increasing interest in a company name, but it does not measure sales or costs.
  • Retention measures how much revenue from existing customers is retained over time; it is not a profit figure.

Ahrefs says its September 2026 list drew on around 1,500 bootstrapped SaaS companies and ranked them by year-over-year change in brand-name searches, comparing the latest 12 months with the preceding 12 months. That makes it a current discovery list, not a ranking of the most profitable businesses. The evidence available here does not provide a comparable audited profit dataset for those companies.

19 bootstrapped SaaS companies to investigate

The following names appear in Ahrefs’ September 2026 discovery list, with one name omitted. The source’s search-demand ranking is not reproduced as a profitability ranking. The available information does not establish comparable product, customer, distribution, or financial details for each company, so those details should be checked against company materials before drawing business-model lessons.

To turn any name into a useful case study, look for four things: whom the product serves and what recurring problem it solves; how it reaches customers; how it charges; and what dated, attributable financial evidence the company has disclosed. Record whether a number is revenue, ARR, MRR, or profit, along with its date, currency, and accounting basis. If expenses or a profit figure are not disclosed, do not infer profitability from revenue.

How to interpret the 2026 SaaS benchmarks

SaaS Capital’s 2026 survey covered more than 1,000 private B2B SaaS companies. For bootstrapped companies reporting $3 million–$20 million in ARR, the reported medians were 15% annual revenue growth, 103% net revenue retention (NRR), and 91% gross revenue retention (GRR). These figures describe a specific survey segment; they are not results for the named companies or a general benchmark for every SaaS business.

Within that same segment, SaaS Capital reported 90th-percentile figures of 42.3% growth, 117.9% NRR, and 100% GRR. These are upper-percentile survey results, not targets that every founder should expect to meet. In particular, retention and growth can help assess a business’s performance but do not establish that it is profitable.

How to find stronger evidence of profitability

  1. Start with the original disclosure. If a roundup reports a financial figure, trace it to the company or founder statement rather than relying on the roundup alone.
  2. Identify the metric. Check whether the figure is revenue, ARR, MRR, operating income, or net profit. Do not treat these terms as interchangeable.
  3. Check the date and basis. Note the period covered, currency, whether the figure is recurring, and whether it is self-reported or independently verified.
  4. Look for costs or an explicit profit claim. Revenue alone cannot show whether a company covered salaries, infrastructure, marketing, taxes, and other expenses.
  5. Keep the claim narrow. A dated founder disclosure can support a statement about what the founder reported at that time; it does not automatically establish audited or current profitability.

Secondary roundups can help identify possible disclosures, but they are leads rather than proof. One roundup describes its revenue figures as public disclosures from founders on social platforms and open-startup sites; another groups examples by reported monthly recurring revenue bands. Neither kind of revenue listing, by itself, demonstrates profit.
