Usually, the difference is modest. Moving from 144Hz to 180Hz gives each refresh interval about 1.39 milliseconds less time, which can make motion look a little smoother when a game is producing enough frames. But it is not a guaranteed competitive advantage, and many players may find the change subtle. If you already like your 144Hz monitor, 180Hz alone is unlikely to transform your experience; when buying new, it can be a sensible choice if the display is otherwise just as good and competitively priced.
What changes between 144Hz and 180Hz?
Refresh rate is how often a display can update its image each second. At 144Hz, one refresh interval is about 6.94 milliseconds; at 180Hz, it is about 5.56 milliseconds. That is approximately 1.39 milliseconds less per interval, and a 25% higher refresh rate. These are frame intervals, not pixel response times.
The shorter interval creates more opportunities to show a new frame during fast motion. That can contribute to a smoother impression, provided the game, graphics hardware, and connection can deliver frames at the relevant rate. The perceived improvement does not necessarily scale with the numerical increase in hertz.
Will you notice the difference in games?
Possibly, but expect a small change rather than a dramatic one. The closest relevant evidence is a 2026 study by NVIDIA Research: 101 gamers performed a custom FPS target-acquisition task at 60Hz, 144Hz, and 360Hz. Participants could distinguish 60Hz from 360Hz in the perception task, but not 144Hz from 360Hz. The authors also reported that “performance did not significantly differ between 144Hz and 360Hz conditions” for that task. Read the study.

- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
That study did not test 180Hz, so it cannot establish whether you will notice 144Hz versus 180Hz or whether 180Hz improves your results. Its findings apply to the tested task, not every game or player. The modest perceptual difference from 144Hz to 180Hz is a reasonable expectation based on adjacent refresh-rate evidence, not a result directly measured in a 144Hz-versus-180Hz experiment.
Competitive FPS games
In a fast competitive game, a shorter refresh interval may matter to someone who values small timing differences. But the available task evidence does not show an improvement from 144Hz to 180Hz. Do not treat the extra refresh rate as a guaranteed boost to aim, reaction time, or match results.

Other games and everyday use
The practical difference depends on the game and how consistently it supplies frames. In games that run well below 180 frames per second, the monitor cannot show a newly rendered frame at every refresh. In slower-paced games, the extra headroom may be less noticeable than other qualities such as resolution, contrast, or motion handling.
Why frame pacing and motion handling matter
A high maximum refresh rate is only one part of smooth motion. NVIDIA’s 2024 variable-frame-timing research tested frequent frame-time variations of 4–12 milliseconds around 30–240Hz. In its tested conditions, larger 12ms variations harmed reported smoothness, while the effect was diminished for smaller 4ms variations. Read the study. This supports a practical point: stable frame delivery can matter more to perceived smoothness than a higher peak refresh number paired with distracting timing variation.

On LCD displays, motion clarity also depends on pixel transitions and image persistence, not just refresh rate. NVIDIA explains these contributors to motion blur in its discussion of display motion blur. Read NVIDIA’s overview. A monitor advertised with a fast response time is not necessarily clearer in motion; look for independent measurements of actual response behavior.
How to choose between two monitors
Compare the specific displays, not only their refresh-rate labels. Relevant factors include measured input lag, motion handling and pixel response, variable refresh rate (VRR) behavior, resolution, supported input bandwidth, and price. RTINGS’ refresh-rate and input-lag guidance distinguishes input lag from pixel response and lists rate-derived timing figures. See its monitor refresh-rate guide.

- Keep your 144Hz monitor if you are satisfied with its image and motion behavior. The 180Hz step alone is a modest reason to replace it.
- Consider 180Hz when buying new if the monitor is comparable in price and does not sacrifice resolution, motion clarity, or useful features.
- Prioritize stable frame delivery and check VRR support and behavior if your game’s frame rate varies.
- Check the connection and mode support: confirm the monitor input, cable, graphics device, and selected resolution support the refresh rate you intend to use.
- Compare independent measurements for input lag and response behavior rather than relying on a manufacturer’s response-time claim alone.
For a practical side-by-side check, set both displays to their intended refresh rates in the operating system and game, use the same resolution and connection conditions where possible, and compare the same scenes. This helps keep the comparison fair; it is not a substitute for controlled measurement.

RTINGS lists a 6.94ms refresh interval at 144Hz and 5.56ms at 180Hz. It also gives minimum input-lag estimates at the center of a display of 3.47ms at 144Hz and 2.78ms at 180Hz. Those input-lag values are estimates derived from refresh rate, not measurements that apply to every monitor; actual display input lag varies by model. See the figures and methodology.

Neither set of figures is a measurement of pixel response time. The interval tells you how often the display can refresh; it does not by itself tell you how quickly pixels change color or how clear a moving object will look.
