How to compare free cloud storage
Start with the way you plan to use the service, not its headline storage number. Check whether it works on your devices, whether it syncs files or backs up a whole device, how sharing works, and what happens when you reach the limit. Privacy also varies: ordinary encryption in transit and at rest is not the same as end-to-end encryption, where the provider says it cannot access your files.
- Sync and access: Can you reach the same files from your computer, phone, and browser?
- Backup: Does the service automatically protect device data, or does it only sync folders you select?
- Sharing: Can you share a link, control access, or collaborate on files?
- Quota rules: Is the allowance recurring, a temporary bonus, or a trial? Is it shared with email or photos?
- Account-full policy: Can you still download or share existing files after you hit the cap?
A cloud account is not automatically a complete backup. Sync can also propagate deletions or unwanted changes, so keep another copy of important files—ideally on a separate device or backup service.

Which option fits your needs?
For Apple device backup
iCloud is closely integrated with iPhone, iPad, and Mac workflows. Apple documents automatic iPhone and iPad backup when connected to power and Wi-Fi, while iCloud Drive provides access to files across Apple devices, Windows, and the web. Check the current account quota before enabling backups, since device backup can consume space needed for other iCloud data.
For Microsoft files and Windows
OneDrive’s free account includes 5 GB according to Microsoft. It is a practical starting point for file sync, but the over-quota consequences matter if you approach that cap: Microsoft says some services stop working, new OneDrive uploads, edits, and sync can stop, and the account may later be frozen or its files deleted under the stated timeline.

For end-to-end encrypted storage
Proton explicitly says its free Drive plan receives the same encryption level as paid plans and describes end-to-end and zero-access encryption. Compare this with providers that merely say data is encrypted: ask whether only you control the decryption keys, what happens to shared files, and whether account recovery can restore access.
For collaboration and shared links
Dropbox Basic lists shared links and collaboration features, but its 2 GB limit and three-device connection cap may be restrictive. Box highlights shared links—including for people without Box accounts—and two-factor authentication; confirm the free individual plan terms, because the cited page is weighted toward business offerings.

For archive or technical storage
Backblaze B2 is object storage rather than a conventional consumer drive. It may suit applications or workflows built around object storage, but it is a less direct choice if you expect a simple folder that syncs automatically across a laptop and phone.

The result depends on the provider. Microsoft’s published policy is a concrete example: exceeding the Microsoft storage quota can stop some services, including new OneDrive uploads, edits, and sync. Microsoft says the account is frozen after three months over quota and that, after six months, it might delete OneDrive and its files. - Download or move files you need to retain, and verify that the copied files open correctly.
- Remove unneeded files and empty the service’s trash or recycle bin if it counts against the limit.
- If you need more space, compare a verified upgrade with another provider—but account for the time and risk involved in moving data.
Before uploading important files
- Confirm the free allowance on the provider’s current plan page and check regional availability, device limits, trial status, and expiry conditions.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where available and use a unique account password.
- For sensitive files, read the provider’s encryption explanation and distinguish end-to-end or zero-access protection from encryption in transit and at rest.
- Test a restore: download a file on another device and confirm it matches the original.
- Keep a second copy of irreplaceable files outside the same account. File sync alone may reproduce accidental deletion or corruption.
