“15 Top Application Performance Monitoring Vendors: Gartner” refers to a 2020 CRN article summarizing Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Application Performance Monitoring, not a current 2026 ranking. The historical list contained 15 vendors, but Gartner’s latest public research frames the market mainly through Observability Platforms and Digital Experience Monitoring.

The distinction matters. APM remains important for tracing requests, diagnosing code and database problems, and understanding service dependencies. Modern observability platforms add logs, metrics, infrastructure, automation, cost controls, and increasingly AI-related capabilities. Digital Experience Monitoring adds real-user monitoring, synthetic testing, session replay, mobile monitoring, and internet-performance analysis.

This article reconstructs the original Gartner/CRN list, preserves the historical strengths and weaknesses reported at the time, and explains how buyers should interpret those names in 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The 15 vendors came from Gartner’s 2020 Magic Quadrant for Application Performance Monitoring, as summarized by CRN; the list is historical rather than a 2026 ranking.
  • Cisco AppDynamics, Dynatrace, New Relic, and Broadcom were the 2020 Leaders; Microsoft Azure Monitor was the Challenger; Splunk SignalFx and Datadog were Visionaries.
  • Gartner’s publicly summarized 2025 research evaluated 20 Observability Platforms providers, including Datadog, Dynatrace, Elastic, Grafana Labs, Honeycomb, Microsoft, New Relic, Oracle, SolarWinds, Splunk, and others.
  • Gartner’s 2025 Digital Experience Monitoring research evaluated 14 providers, including Datadog, Dynatrace, IBM, ManageEngine, New Relic, Riverbed, SolarWinds, and Splunk.
  • A current shortlist should compare backend APM, broader observability, and digital experience monitoring separately rather than treating the three categories as interchangeable.

Gartner’s 2020 inclusion criteria required a provider to offer an APM software product with application discovery, tracing, diagnostics, and either front-end monitoring or domain-centric artificial intelligence and machine learning. Gartner’s Magic Quadrant framework assessed Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision, then grouped vendors as Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries, or Niche Players. Gartner explains the framework in its Magic Quadrant methodology.

CRN also reported Gartner’s estimate that 2019 APM spending was nearly $4.5 billion, with an expected 11% compound annual growth rate over the following three years. The estimate excluded professional services and is a 2020-era market forecast, not current market-size data.

Which 15 vendors appeared in Gartner’s 2020 APM list?

The following table reproduces the historical categories and the main strength and weakness reported by CRN. “Vendor” is used broadly because the list included companies, product brands, divisions, and products whose ownership or packaging may have changed.

What did each vendor offer in the 2020 Gartner evaluation?

1. Cisco AppDynamics — Leader

CRN reported that AppDynamics ranked first for Gartner’s Ability to Execute and third for Completeness of Vision. The historical product combined core APM with end-user monitoring, infrastructure visibility, business-performance monitoring, Business IQ, AIOps, and machine-learning capabilities. Integrations with Cisco Workload Optimization Manager and Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure extended the platform into infrastructure and application operations.

Business IQ was the reported strength because it connected technical performance with business analysis. The reported weakness was commercial: users considered AppDynamics expensive and described pricing and contract terms as inflexible. AppDynamics should not be treated as an unchanged Cisco-only story. Gartner Peer Insights currently presents AppDynamics in a Cisco Systems/Splunk context and still identifies it as an APM product; buyers should confirm current ownership, packaging, and commercial terms on the current Gartner Peer Insights AppDynamics page.

2. Dynatrace — Leader

Dynatrace ranked first for vision and second for execution in the CRN summary. Its 2020 capabilities included APM, infrastructure and network-monitoring elements, log analytics, digital experience monitoring, AIOps, automatic anomaly detection, root-cause analysis, business-impact analysis, and application and infrastructure topology.

CRN identified Dynatrace’s common data model and embedded AI/ML across APM, DEM, and third-party data as a strength. Users described the pricing model as confusing. Dynatrace remains relevant in both Gartner’s 2025 Observability Platforms research and 2025 Digital Experience Monitoring research, although those markets are broader or different from the 2020 APM market.

3. New Relic — Leader

New Relic ranked second for vision and third for execution. The historical platform covered APM, DEM, infrastructure monitoring, logs, metrics, analytics, distributed tracing, serverless monitoring, and AIOps.

CRN described enterprise expansion and increasing international reach as strengths. The reported weakness was deployment complexity caused by multiple language- and environment-specific agents compared with single-agent competitors. New Relic appears in Gartner’s 2025 Observability Platforms and Digital Experience Monitoring research.

4. Broadcom — Leader

Broadcom ranked fourth for both execution and vision and was represented by DX Application Performance Management and DX SaaS. The product family covered infrastructure and network monitoring, end-user experience, business transactions, cloud and mainframe monitoring, AIOps, and cloud-native environments.

Portfolio Licensing Agreements were the reported strength for large enterprises seeking expanded APM capacity. CRN reported that cloud-native operations and DevOps adoption lagged leading competitors. Broadcom is not among the vendors in Gartner’s publicly summarized 2025 Observability Platforms Magic Quadrant, so the 2020 Leader designation should not be presented as current.

Is Gartner still publishing a standalone APM Magic Quadrant?

Gartner’s latest public research in the dossier does not present a current standalone APM Magic Quadrant. Gartner’s publicly summarized 2025 research places APM in the wider Observability Platforms market and treats customer-facing performance separately through Digital Experience Monitoring.

Gartner’s 2025 Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms, published July 7, 2025, evaluated 20 providers: Amazon Web Services, Apica, BMC Helix, Chronosphere, Coralogix, Datadog, Dynatrace, Elastic, Grafana Labs, Honeycomb, IBM, ITRS, LogicMonitor, Microsoft, New Relic, Oracle, ScienceLogic, SolarWinds, Splunk, and Sumo Logic.

Gartner’s associated 2025 Critical Capabilities for Observability Platforms examines telemetry ingestion and storage, interoperability, telemetry exploration, cost control, LLM observability, actionable insights, user experience and business analysis, automated response, SRE, platform operations, software engineering, and cost optimization.

What is the difference between APM, observability, and DEM?

APM focuses on application performance and diagnosis, observability covers a broader set of telemetry and operational workflows, and DEM measures the experience seen by users and customers. The categories overlap, but they answer different buying questions.

Layer Primary question Typical capabilities Common blind spot
Application performance monitoring Why is an application or transaction slow or failing? Distributed tracing, service maps, code diagnostics, profiling, exception analysis, database visibility May provide limited user, network, infrastructure, or log context
Observability platform What is happening across the technology environment, and how should teams respond? Logs, metrics, traces, infrastructure, correlation, automation, SRE workflows, cost controls, AI/LLM observability Broad coverage can increase complexity, storage cost, and governance work
Digital Experience Monitoring What performance and availability do customers and end users experience? RUM, session replay, synthetic transactions, API tests, mobile monitoring, customer journeys, internet-performance analysis May not provide deep code-level root-cause analysis

Gartner’s 2025 Digital Experience Monitoring research, published October 27, 2025, evaluated Blue Triangle, Catchpoint, Checkly, Conviva, Datadog, Dynatrace, IBM, ip-label, ITRS Group, ManageEngine, New Relic, Riverbed, SolarWinds, and Splunk. Its corresponding Critical Capabilities research covers RUM and session replay, customer-journey mapping, synthetic transaction and API monitoring, mobile-app monitoring, and internet-performance monitoring.

Which vendors are relevant to a current shortlist?

There is no universal “best APM vendor” based on the historical quadrant. A defensible 2026 shortlist should be organized by workload, deployment model, telemetry economics, and required user-experience coverage.

Buyer situation Shortlist direction Why it may fit What to validate
Broad enterprise observability Dynatrace, Datadog, New Relic, Splunk, IBM, Microsoft Broad combinations of APM, infrastructure, logs, traces, automation, and user experience Data volume, product overlap, licensing, retention, and operating complexity
Cloud-native engineering Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic, Honeycomb, Grafana Cloud, Chronosphere Focus on distributed services, containers, Kubernetes, high-cardinality telemetry, and engineering workflows Language support, sampling, Kubernetes coverage, query cost, and alert quality
Microsoft-centric estate Azure Monitor/Application Insights, Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic Azure integration or broad cross-platform coverage Non-Azure visibility and multicloud correlation
Hybrid, packaged, or legacy environments IBM, SolarWinds, Oracle, Microsoft, Riverbed, Broadcom where current fit is confirmed Potential coverage for traditional infrastructure, enterprise platforms, or hybrid deployments Mainframe and packaged-application support, deployment model, current investment, and support
Digital experience priority Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic, Splunk, Riverbed, SolarWinds, ManageEngine RUM, synthetics, mobile, session replay, or internet-performance capabilities Journey mapping, replay privacy, test locations, mobile coverage, and backend correlation
Open-source or OpenTelemetry-oriented strategy Grafana Cloud, Elastic, Honeycomb, Chronosphere, plus other compatible backends Composable telemetry and reduced dependence on one instrumentation model Backend feature depth, support, portability, storage, alerting, and governance effort

The current alternatives should not be retroactively inserted into Gartner’s 2020 list. Elastic, Grafana Labs, Honeycomb, Chronosphere, Coralogix, LogicMonitor, Sumo Logic, AWS, BMC Helix, and ScienceLogic are relevant because they appear in Gartner’s 2025 Observability Platforms research, not because they were part of the historical APM quadrant.

How should buyers compare APM vendors in 2026?

1. Start with coverage, not the quadrant label

Document whether the platform must cover backend traces, metrics, logs, databases, profiling, browser performance, mobile applications, RUM, synthetics, session replay, network paths, business transactions, mainframes, Kubernetes, and serverless workloads. Broad platforms can reduce tool sprawl, but broad coverage can also increase cost and implementation complexity.

2. Test instrumentation and OpenTelemetry support

Check native OpenTelemetry support, vendor-agent capabilities, automatic and manual instrumentation, custom spans and attributes, sampling controls, instrumentation overhead, and the ability to export telemetry elsewhere. Vendor agents may provide deeper diagnostics and easier onboarding. OpenTelemetry can improve portability, but an open instrumentation layer does not guarantee identical feature depth across backends.

3. Model the complete telemetry bill

Require a written explanation of the billing unit and every variable charge. Model hosts, containers, nodes, ingest volume, spans, logs, retention, queries, RUM sessions, users, synthetic executions, session replay, seats, support, data egress, annual minimums, overages, renewal increases, and professional services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main pricing failure mode is comparing pilot subscription prices without modeling production telemetry growth. High-cardinality data, long retention, replay, synthetic tests, and unfiltered logs can change the economics substantially. No reliable current dollar prices were established in the supplied research, so current prices should be obtained from dated official pricing pages or vendor quotes rather than inferred from the 2020 list.

4. Check deployment, residency, and privacy controls

Evaluate SaaS, self-managed, hybrid, and managed-service options; private connectivity; regional storage; PII redaction; encryption; retention policies; compliance; and air-gapped or restricted-network operation. DEM features such as session replay need especially careful privacy review.

5. Verify diagnostic depth

A useful proof of concept should test distributed traces, code-level transaction breakdowns, continuous profiling, exception analysis, database queries, dependency mapping, root-cause analysis, deployment correlation, business-impact analysis, and change intelligence. Attractive dashboards are not a substitute for actionable diagnosis.

6. Test the operational workflow

Connect the candidate to incident management, ticketing, chat, CI/CD, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code, cloud providers, security operations, and event-management systems. Ask whether application teams can onboard independently, create dashboards, tune alerts, separate data by business unit, and use sufficiently granular role-based access.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Plan the exit before signing

Ask what telemetry can be exported, in which open formats, with what historical fidelity, and at what cost. Confirm whether dashboards, alert rules, custom instrumentation, service names, tags, and runbooks can be migrated. An OpenTelemetry strategy can reduce instrumentation lock-in, but backend queries, storage, alerting, and workflows may still be proprietary.

What changed between the 2020 APM list and the current market?

The market expanded from application-centric monitoring into platforms that correlate logs, metrics, traces, infrastructure, security signals, user experience, automation, and cost data. Kubernetes, serverless systems, distributed architectures, OpenTelemetry, high-cardinality telemetry, and AI-assisted operations changed what buyers expect from a monitoring platform.

Ownership and branding also changed. AppDynamics requires a current Cisco/Splunk context check; SignalFx was an acquisition-era Splunk name; Instana should be checked as an IBM product rather than assumed to be an unchanged independent vendor; Aternity’s current packaging requires verification; and Micro Focus should be treated as historical unless current participation is independently confirmed.

Gartner’s 2025 categories are not directly comparable with Gartner’s 2020 APM quadrant. Different research categories use different definitions, inclusion criteria, evaluation models, and reference inputs. A vendor can appear in one market and be absent from another without that absence proving that the product is universally inferior.

What are the most common mistakes when using the 15-vendor list?

  • Calling the list current: The CRN article summarized 2020 research and should be dated prominently.
  • Calling it a numerical ranking: The categories describe Gartner’s evaluation framework; they do not establish a simple first-to-fifteenth product-quality ranking.
  • Confusing CRN and Gartner: CRN published the article, while Gartner produced the Magic Quadrant research it summarized.
  • Treating APM and DEM as synonyms: Backend diagnostics and customer-experience measurement solve related but different problems.
  • Using category placement as the buying decision: A proof of concept, production-scale cost model, reference calls, residency review, support test, and exit plan are still necessary.
  • Ignoring implementation work: Automatic instrumentation does not eliminate naming conventions, service ownership, alert tuning, sampling, PII redaction, dashboard standards, runbooks, or telemetry governance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The 15 names remain useful as a historical record of Gartner’s 2020 APM market, but they are not the 15 best APM vendors in 2026. Use the list to understand market history, then build a current shortlist around observability-platform coverage, digital experience monitoring, OpenTelemetry and portability, deployment requirements, diagnostic depth, and production-scale telemetry cost.
