For most teams, Plane is the strongest starting point if you want a modern, self-hostable work-management system with work items, cycles, modules, documentation, multiple views, intake, dashboards, an API, and webhooks. Choose OpenProject instead when formal scheduling, Gantt-style planning, budgets, time tracking, Scrum, and structured project controls matter more than simplicity. For individual task management, Vikunja is the more direct choice.

The other tools on this list solve different problems. Taiga and Leantime target specialized team workflows, Nextcloud Deck adds boards to an existing Nextcloud installation, Redmine favors mature issue tracking, ProjectLibre is a desktop scheduler, and Super Productivity and Taskwarrior are primarily individual productivity tools. The ranking below compares documented capabilities, deployment model, licensing, and likely audience—not unverified claims about speed, usability, uptime, or performance.

What “free and open source” means in this list

These products are not identical simply because they are described as free or open source.

  • Free self-hosted edition: You can run the software yourself without paying a license fee, but you still provide the server, storage, backups, TLS, upgrades, monitoring, and administration.
  • Open-source core with paid offerings: Some projects also sell hosted, commercial, enterprise, or air-gapped editions. Features and support may differ between editions.
  • Hosted option: A project may offer hosting for convenience, but hosted availability, limits, and pricing can change.
  • Free desktop or local application: A tool can be free and open source while being designed for one person rather than a multi-user project server.

Plane documents a free AGPL-3.0 Community Edition. OpenProject documents a free, self-managed Community Edition with unlimited users and projects. Vikunja combines open-source self-hosting with a paid hosted option. Those are different operating and funding models, so check the edition and license before deploying a product for a business.

  • Versatile and Long-Lasting: Suitable for various settings including office, home, school, or personal use, our desk planner is built to last throughout the year, ensuring reliability for all your planning needs.

Self-hosting is also not the same as zero cost. A production installation may need a VPS or other server, a domain, HTTPS certificates, database storage, backup storage, monitoring, an upgrade process, and someone responsible for security and recovery. A hosted plan may cost more in subscription fees but less in administration.

1. Plane — best modern all-rounder for teams

Plane is the best first product to investigate when a team wants something more capable than a simple Kanban board without immediately adopting a traditional enterprise project suite. Its documented feature set covers projects, work items, cycles, modules, pages, multiple views, intake, dashboards, a REST API, and webhooks.

That combination makes Plane suitable for software teams, product groups, agencies, and internal operations teams that need both execution and lightweight documentation. Cycles support recurring planning, modules can group work by a larger feature or initiative, and intake provides a way to collect incoming requests before they become planned work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plane’s Community Edition is AGPL-3.0 and can be self-hosted with Docker or Kubernetes. However, do not treat every Plane feature or product offering as part of the free edition. Its current positioning also includes commercial and air-gapped editions, so organizations should compare edition-specific capabilities before relying on governance, enterprise, or isolated-deployment features.

Choose Plane if: you want a modern, flexible team workspace with work-item views, cycles, documentation, intake, and automation hooks.

Look elsewhere if: you need formal cost controls and detailed scheduling first, want a simple personal list, or do not want to administer a server.

2. OpenProject — best for structured project management

OpenProject is the strongest choice for teams that manage projects through schedules, dependencies, formal milestones, budgets, time entries, and structured work packages rather than only cards and checklists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its documented capabilities include project planning and scheduling, roadmaps, task management, Agile and Scrum workflows, time tracking, cost reporting, budgeting, bug tracking, wikis, forums, and meeting management. That breadth makes it appropriate for construction, engineering, consulting, software delivery, research, and organizations that need project controls beyond a simple task board.

The self-managed Community Edition is documented as free of charge, open source, and available for unlimited users and projects. The project repository identifies the GPL-3.0 license. “Free” here means there is no license fee for the documented Community Edition; it does not remove the work of hosting, securing, upgrading, and backing up the installation.

Choose OpenProject if: scheduling, Gantt-style planning, Scrum, time tracking, budgeting, and formal project reporting are central requirements.

Look elsewhere if: you want a small personal task list, a very minimal board, or a local desktop application with no server administration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Vikunja — best personal or lightweight team task manager

Vikunja is a direct task-management choice for people who want lists, reminders, Kanban boards, Gantt views, and related task features without adopting a large project-control suite.

It can work for personal planning, household or volunteer projects, and small teams whose work is primarily a collection of tasks and deadlines. Its model is easier to understand when your main question is “What needs to be done, and when?” rather than “How do we manage budgets, resources, portfolios, and formal project baselines?”

Vikunja offers open-source self-hosting alongside a paid hosted option. Its repository identifies AGPL-3.0-or-later for most of the project. Before choosing the hosted route, check the current plan limits and feature availability; before self-hosting, plan for the usual server, storage, backup, and upgrade responsibilities.

Choose Vikunja if: you want a relatively straightforward task manager with list, Kanban, Gantt, and reminder-oriented workflows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look elsewhere if: you need extensive portfolio governance, detailed budgeting, or a mature enterprise project-management ecosystem.

4. Taiga — best for agile teams seeking a focused workflow

Taiga is a natural fit for teams that already think in Scrum or Kanban terms. Its official material describes it as free and open source, and its documentation covers production installation with Docker, APIs, importers, webhooks, integrations, and contribution workflows.

That makes Taiga more suitable for an agile delivery team than for someone looking only for a personal to-do list. Teams can evaluate it when they need an agile-oriented project space and want to connect it to other tools through integrations, APIs, or webhooks.

Taiga’s deployment documentation matters because production installation is a real operational project. A team should review the supported installation path, database and storage requirements, upgrade procedure, backup approach, and current release activity before making it the system of record.

Choose Taiga if: Scrum or Kanban is the center of your planning process and you want an open-source platform built around agile delivery.

Look elsewhere if: you need a personal task app, traditional cost and resource controls, or a no-maintenance hosted experience.

5. Leantime — best for non-project managers and goal-oriented planning

Leantime is positioned as an open-source project-management system for non-project managers. That positioning is important: it aims to connect goals, planning, execution, and knowledge rather than assuming that every user already understands formal project-management terminology.

Its documented features include task management, project planning, knowledge management, Kanban, Gantt, table, list, and calendar views, subtasks, dependencies, milestones, sprint management, time tracking, goals, wikis, permissions, and integrations. The result is a broad workflow that can serve teams working from objectives through delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leantime also describes an accessibility focus for people with ADHD, dyslexia, and autism. Treat that as product positioning rather than an independently validated accessibility certification. Organizations with formal accessibility requirements should perform their own review with the relevant users and assistive technologies.

Choose Leantime if: your users are not project-management specialists and you want goals, planning, execution, knowledge, and multiple views in one system.

Look elsewhere if: you need a narrowly focused personal list, a dedicated command-line workflow, or a platform whose documented license and deployment model are already familiar to your organization.

6. Nextcloud Deck — best when tasks should live inside Nextcloud

Nextcloud Deck is the right answer when your organization already runs Nextcloud and wants task boards alongside files, sharing, comments, activity, and other collaboration features. It is an AGPL-licensed Kanban-style organization tool integrated into the Nextcloud ecosystem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Documented capabilities include cards, labels, sharing, attachments, comments, activity streams, mobile apps, and integrations. Nextcloud’s more recent product material also describes Kanban and Gantt views. The important architectural distinction is that Deck depends on a Nextcloud installation; it is not a standalone task-management server in the same category as Vikunja, Plane, or OpenProject.

Deck can reduce context switching for a Nextcloud-based organization because files and task collaboration can remain in the same environment. It is less compelling if you do not already operate Nextcloud, since deploying and maintaining a full file-collaboration platform solely for task boards adds unnecessary infrastructure.

Choose Deck if: Nextcloud is already part of your organization’s workflow and boards should share its files, permissions, comments, and collaboration environment.

Look elsewhere if: you want a standalone task manager or do not need Nextcloud’s broader file and collaboration platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Redmine — best for mature issue tracking and extensibility

Redmine is a flexible, open-source project-management web application released under the GPLv2. It is a strong candidate for teams that value mature issue tracking, project administration, and extensibility over a newer, lighter presentation.

Redmine is particularly relevant when tasks are really issues: bugs, feature requests, support work, engineering tickets, or items that need project-specific configuration. Its established plugin ecosystem can be an advantage when an organization needs to adapt the system to an existing process.

The trade-off is category fit and operational judgment. Redmine should not be assumed to be as modern or lightweight as newer tools without direct testing. Teams should evaluate the interface, plugin maintenance, upgrade compatibility, permissions, notification behavior, and backup process for their specific deployment.

Look elsewhere if: you want an immediately simple personal app, a visual-first modern workspace, or a narrowly focused Kanban board.

8. Kanboard — best minimalist Kanban option

Kanboard focuses on the Kanban methodology and is distributed under the MIT License. It is worth considering when the team wants a small, board-centered system instead of a broad project-management suite.

Minimalism can be an advantage: fewer concepts can mean less configuration and a clearer workflow for teams that only need columns, cards, and basic board management. It can also be limiting if you later need advanced scheduling, extensive documentation, budgets, or a growing set of collaboration features.

The most important caveat is maintenance status. Kanboard’s official repository explicitly says the project is in maintenance mode: major new features are not actively developed, although community releases and fixes continue. That does not make it unusable, but it changes the adoption decision. Prefer it when its current feature set is sufficient and avoid choosing it on the assumption that a large stream of new functionality is coming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Kanboard if: you want a lightweight MIT-licensed Kanban board and value a focused feature set.

Look elsewhere if: you need an actively expanding all-in-one platform or want comprehensive planning and reporting features.

9. Wekan — best Trello-style self-hosted board

Wekan is open-source Kanban software for users who want the familiar board pattern of lists and cards in a self-hosted environment. Its documentation identifies it as MIT licensed.

Wekan is best understood as a board-centric task manager. It can suit personal projects, small teams, editorial pipelines, simple support queues, and workflows where the board itself is the primary planning artifact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose Wekan expecting the portfolio, budget, resource, or formal scheduling controls found in OpenProject, or the broader work-item and documentation model found in Plane. Its value is its focused board workflow, not its coverage of every project-management discipline.

Choose Wekan if: you want a self-hosted, Trello-style Kanban experience based on cards and lists.

Look elsewhere if: your team needs Gantt scheduling, budgeting, advanced project controls, or a full knowledge-management workspace.

10. ProjectLibre Desktop — best traditional desktop scheduler

ProjectLibre Desktop belongs in a different category from browser-based collaborative task boards. It is free and open-source project-management software for Linux, macOS, and Windows, designed around traditional desktop scheduling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its most important documented strengths are task dependencies and the ability to open Microsoft Project files. That makes it relevant to project managers who need a desktop planning tool, need to work with existing Microsoft Project schedules, or do not want to run a web server for a planning activity.

Because it is a desktop application, do not treat it as a replacement for a multi-user collaborative project server. Teams should decide how schedules are shared, versioned, stored, and backed up, and whether simultaneous collaboration is required.

Choose ProjectLibre Desktop if: your priority is traditional schedule planning, task dependencies, cross-platform desktop support, or Microsoft Project file compatibility.

Look elsewhere if: your team needs a shared browser workspace, chat, live collaboration, or a task board that multiple users update continuously.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Super Productivity — best local-first personal task and time management

Super Productivity is an open-source todo and productivity application for people who want local data, timeboxing, time tracking, and integrations without being required to create an account or register.

The project documents integrations for Jira, GitLab, GitHub, and OpenProject, along with CalDAV support and backups. Its local storage model is particularly relevant to developers, freelancers, and privacy-conscious individuals who want their task and time data on their own device.

Super Productivity is not a full multi-user project-management server. It can complement a team’s issue tracker or project platform, especially for personal planning and timeboxing, but it should not be presented as a shared replacement for Plane, OpenProject, or Redmine.

Choose Super Productivity if: you want a local-first personal workflow with timeboxing, time tracking, calendar support, and developer-tool integrations.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Look elsewhere if: you need centralized team permissions, shared project boards, multi-user administration, or server-side reporting.

12. Taskwarrior — best command-line task manager

Taskwarrior is a cross-platform, open-source task and time-management tool centered on a command-line interface. It is a strong choice for keyboard-driven users, automation enthusiasts, developers, and anyone who prefers text-based workflows over graphical boards.

A command-line model makes Taskwarrior suitable for scripts, shell-based routines, searchable task data, and highly customized personal workflows. It also makes the learning curve and collaboration model different from those of browser-based applications.

Taskwarrior is not a visual collaborative board by itself. Users who need shared boards, web interfaces, mobile access, or synchronization may need additional front ends or synchronization components. Evaluate those additions as separate software with their own maintenance and compatibility considerations.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Taskwarrior if: you prefer the terminal, structured text, automation, and a highly keyboard-driven task workflow.

Look elsewhere if: nontechnical teammates need a visual board or you want collaboration without assembling additional components.

13. Jinear — best small-team self-hosted workspace among newer options

Jinear describes itself as an AGPL-3.0 open-source project manager with tasks, lists, checklists, reminders, boards, calendar synchronization, files, and Docker-based self-hosting.

That feature mix makes it a candidate for small teams that want more than a basic board but do not need the formal controls of OpenProject. Self-hosting is described as free, and the hosted offering has a free allowance for individuals and small groups according to the project’s stated positioning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jinear is maintained by a small team, so adoption requires more due diligence than simply checking the feature list. Inspect recent release activity, documentation quality, issue response, upgrade instructions, backup procedures, and the project’s ability to support your required integrations before using it for critical operations.

Choose Jinear if: you want a newer Docker-based self-hosted workspace with tasks, boards, reminders, files, and calendar synchronization.

Look elsewhere if: you require a long-established ecosystem, formal enterprise controls, or a proven support and release history for a critical deployment.

14. AlianHub — best emerging all-in-one self-hosted candidate

AlianHub describes itself as an AGPL-3.0 open-source project-management platform with chat, channels, custom fields, time tracking, dashboards, sprint management, Docker deployment, and free self-hosting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal is breadth. Teams interested in combining communication, structured work, time records, dashboards, and sprint planning can evaluate it as an emerging all-in-one option rather than assembling those pieces separately.

  • Premium, non-bleed pages: No more frustrations about pens or markers bleeding through flimsy paper! Our notepad is made with premium non-bleed 100 gsm paper to give you the best writing experience. Unlike with our competitors, these pages won’t bleed onto the next one, even if you write with a permanent marker.
  • Sturdy Backing for Writing Anywhere: Our notepad is made with a thick backing that provides a sturdy surface for writing anytime, so you can take it on the go and never miss an important task again. Whether you're at home, in the office, or on the go, you'll always be able to capture your thoughts and stay on top of your daily routine.

However, the available source presents AlianHub as relatively new and actively evolving. That means the feature list should not be treated as evidence of maturity, scale, reliability, security track record, or community size. Test the workflows that matter, review release activity and documentation, and establish a recovery plan before putting important organizational data into the system.

Choose AlianHub if: you are willing to evaluate an evolving self-hosted platform and want chat, channels, custom fields, time tracking, dashboards, and sprint management together.

Look elsewhere if: operational maturity, extensive third-party validation, or a long-established ecosystem is more important than an emerging feature set.

15. PocketTask — best local-first lightweight option to watch

PocketTask describes itself as a free, open-source, local-first task-management tool supporting local, self-hosted, and cloud projects. It may appeal to privacy-focused individuals who want a lightweight way to manage tasks without committing to a large project suite.

The reviewed feature list marked PocketTask’s official cloud service as unavailable. Cloud availability can change, so verify the current status before planning around hosted synchronization. If the cloud service is unavailable, local or self-hosted operation may be the practical path, with the associated responsibility for synchronization, backups, and access.

PocketTask should be labeled as a lighter and less established choice than OpenProject, Plane, or Vikunja. It is a product to evaluate for personal use and smaller workflows, not a default recommendation for organizations that need mature collaboration, reporting, or operational support.

Choose PocketTask if: local-first operation and a lightweight task model are more important than a broad feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look elsewhere if: you need mature team administration, extensive integrations, formal reporting, or a dependable hosted service today.

How to choose the right tool

Choose by workflow, not by feature count

  1. Need a broad modern team workspace? Start with Plane. Compare it with OpenProject if scheduling and formal controls are more important than a flexible work-item model.
  2. Need structured schedules, dependencies, budgets, and time reporting? Start with OpenProject. Consider ProjectLibre Desktop if the requirement is primarily individual desktop scheduling or Microsoft Project file compatibility.
  3. Need personal tasks, reminders, and straightforward lists? Start with Vikunja. Compare Super Productivity if local storage, timeboxing, and no required account are priorities.
  4. Need Scrum or Kanban as the central method? Evaluate Taiga first. Kanboard and Wekan are better when the requirement is a simpler board rather than a complete agile platform.
  5. Already use Nextcloud? Try Nextcloud Deck before deploying another task server. The integration with existing files and collaboration may outweigh the limitations of a standalone board.
  6. Need mature issue tracking and customization? Evaluate Redmine, especially if your team already works in issue-oriented processes or needs plugins.
  7. Prefer the terminal? Taskwarrior is the specialized choice, provided that a CLI workflow fits everyone who must use it.
  8. Want to experiment with newer self-hosted platforms? Review Jinear and AlianHub, but inspect release activity, documentation, security practices, and recovery procedures before using them for critical work.

Compare these practical questions before deployment

  • Who needs access? A personal local app, a small shared board, and an organization-wide platform have different identity and permission requirements.
  • Where will the data live? Decide between local storage, a self-managed server, and a hosted service. Consider data residency and whether your team can administer the chosen environment.
  • What happens when the service is unavailable? Check exports, offline behavior, local copies, and recovery procedures.
  • How will you back up the data? Confirm what must be backed up, including the database, uploaded files, configuration, and any required encryption or authentication material. Test restoring rather than merely creating backup files.
  • How are upgrades handled? Review release notes, supported upgrade paths, migration steps, compatibility with plugins or integrations, and rollback options.
  • What integrations are essential? Distinguish a documented API or webhook from an integration your team has actually validated. Confirm that the needed direction of synchronization is supported.
  • What license and edition are you adopting? Record the exact edition, license, version, and included features. A free community edition may not include every commercial or enterprise capability.
  • What is the exit plan? Check export formats and whether you can retrieve tasks, attachments, comments, time records, and project history in a usable form.

Self-hosting checklist

Plane, OpenProject, Taiga, Vikunja, Jinear, AlianHub, Wekan, Redmine, Kanboard, and Nextcloud Deck can lead to a self-hosting decision, although their deployment models differ. Docker is documented for Plane, Taiga, Jinear, and AlianHub; Nextcloud Deck requires the broader Nextcloud platform. Confirm the current installation documentation for the exact version you intend to deploy.

  1. Choose the deployment boundary: decide whether the application belongs on a personal machine, an internal server, a VPS, or a managed hosting environment.
  2. Plan persistent storage: identify the database, file attachments, uploads, configuration, and logs that need durable storage.
  3. Secure access: use HTTPS, restrict administrative access, apply updates, and use strong account and backup credentials.
  4. Set up backups before importing real work: define frequency, retention, off-server storage, encryption, and restoration testing.
  5. Document upgrades: keep the deployed version, configuration, container images or packages, database migration notes, and rollback procedure recorded.
  6. Monitor the service: watch availability, disk space, database health, failed jobs, certificate expiry, and unusual authentication activity.
  7. Test an ordinary user workflow: create a project, assign a task, attach a file, send a notification, export data, and restore a test backup before inviting the whole team.

Infrastructure such as a VPS, managed Docker hosting, backup storage, or server monitoring can be useful supporting services, but the right provider depends on geography, budget, data requirements, technical skill, and current program availability. No specific hosting provider is endorsed here.

Useful offline companion tools

Software does not eliminate the value of quick offline capture. A project planner notebook or project-planning pad can be useful for sketching objectives, recording action items during a meeting, mapping dependencies, or capturing ideas before transferring them into the team system. It complements task-management software rather than replacing shared status, permissions, reminders, history, and backups. Choose a layout that matches your workflow, then make the software the authoritative record for tasks the team must coordinate.

Limitations of this comparison

This is a capability and audience comparison based on project documentation, stated deployment models, and licenses where those details were documented. It is not a hands-on benchmark. The available product descriptions do not establish which tool is fastest, easiest, most secure, most reliable, or best performing in every environment.

Before adoption, inspect each project’s current release cadence, security advisories, issue activity, documentation, installation requirements, backup process, integration behavior, and hosted-service terms. These factors can matter more than the number of views or features listed on a product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which free and open-source task manager is best for most teams?

Plane is the strongest general starting point when a team wants a modern self-hosted workspace with work items, cycles, modules, documentation, multiple views, intake, dashboards, an API, and webhooks. OpenProject is a better fit when formal scheduling, budgets, time tracking, and structured project controls are more important.

Is open-source task-management software really free?

The software may be available without a license fee, but self-hosting still requires a server, storage, backups, security, upgrades, and administration. Hosted plans may charge separately. Also check the exact edition: a free community edition may not include commercial or enterprise features.

What is the best option for personal task management?

Vikunja is the most direct general-purpose choice on this list for lists, reminders, Kanban, and Gantt-oriented task management. Super Productivity is better for local-first timeboxing and time tracking, while Taskwarrior is better for command-line users.

Which tool should I use to open Microsoft Project files?

ProjectLibre Desktop is the relevant choice in this comparison because it supports Linux, macOS, and Windows and documents the ability to open Microsoft Project files. It is a desktop scheduler, not a full multi-user web collaboration platform.

Is Nextcloud Deck a standalone task manager?

No. Deck is a Kanban-style application integrated into Nextcloud and requires a Nextcloud installation. It is most attractive when your organization already uses Nextcloud for files and collaboration.

Should I use Kanboard for a new project?

Kanboard can be suitable when a minimal Kanban board is all you need, and it is MIT licensed. However, its official repository says it is in maintenance mode, with major new features not actively developed. Confirm that its current feature set and maintenance outlook meet your long-term needs.

The Bottom Line

Start with Plane for a modern team workspace, OpenProject for formal project management, and Vikunja for straightforward personal or lightweight team tasks. Choose Taiga for agile delivery, Deck when you already run Nextcloud, Redmine for mature issue tracking, ProjectLibre for desktop scheduling, Super Productivity for local-first individual work, and Taskwarrior for the command line. Treat Jinear, AlianHub, and PocketTask as options to evaluate carefully rather than assuming that newer or lighter projects have the maturity of the established choices.

Whatever you select, verify the exact license and edition, then plan backups, upgrades, security, integrations, and data export before making the system critical to your work.
