If Center Stage stopped working after you updated to iPadOS 26, first check that your iPad Pro is an eligible generation, you’re using the front-facing camera in an app that supports Center Stage, and the feature is switched on in that app’s controls. Apple’s documentation explains those requirements but does not identify an iPadOS 26 bug that disables Center Stage. The checks below help distinguish a compatibility or setting issue from an app or camera problem; they are not all confirmed fixes for a specific update bug.
Start with the compatibility and control checks
1. Confirm your iPad Pro generation
Center Stage is available on iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation or later) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation or later). An iPad Pro can support iPadOS 26 without meeting Center Stage’s separate model requirement. To identify your model, open Settings > General > About. See Apple’s iPad User Guide for the model-identification path and Apple’s Center Stage requirements.
2. Use the front-facing camera
Apple’s requirement specifies the front camera. If the video app is using a rear camera, switch to the front-facing camera before testing Center Stage.

The feature requires a compatible app. A missing Center Stage control in one app does not mean the iPad camera is broken. If available, try FaceTime as a comparison: if Center Stage appears there but not in the original app, check that app’s settings or support information.

4. Turn on Center Stage in Control Center
- Open the video app you want to use.
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
- Tap the controls for the open app. The label is app-specific; in FaceTime, for example, it may say FaceTime Controls.
- Tap Center Stage to enable it.
Apple’s current iPad instructions describe this route. The older Video Effects button label applied to iPadOS 17 or earlier, so do not rely on that label for iPadOS 26. See Apple’s Center Stage instructions.
5. Check the FaceTime call controls
During a FaceTime call, tap your self-view thumbnail, open Camera Effects, and tap Center Stage. This is another documented route to the control; its availability still depends on using an eligible iPad and the front camera.

Isolate an app or temporary software issue
6. Quit and reopen the affected app
Close the video app, reopen it, and check its controls again. This is a low-risk diagnostic step, not an Apple-confirmed remedy for an iPadOS 26 Center Stage issue. If the problem remains limited to one app, that points toward app-specific behavior rather than proving a device-wide camera failure.
7. Restart the iPad
Restart the iPad, open the same compatible app, and test Center Stage again. A restart is a general troubleshooting check; Apple’s Center Stage guidance does not identify it as a specific fix for this reported symptom.

8. Compare the front-camera preview in another supported app
Try the front camera in another app that supports Center Stage, such as FaceTime if available. Note two separate results: whether the camera shows video at all, and whether framing follows you. Video that works while automatic framing does not directs attention back to app support and Center Stage controls. A camera preview that fails across apps is a broader camera symptom to report to Apple Support.
Check iPadOS and retest the feature
9. Verify the installed iPadOS version
Open Settings > General > About and check the version shown. This confirms which software is installed; the fact that the symptom appeared after an update does not by itself establish that the update caused it. Apple’s iPad User Guide documents the About path.

10. Look for an available software update
Go to Settings > General > Software Update to see whether an update is available. Apple recommends backing up the iPad before downloading new software. An update may be worth checking, but Apple’s iPadOS 26 download guidance does not promise that one will fix Center Stage.
11. Toggle Center Stage and test under clear conditions
With the video app open, use Control Center > [app] Controls > Center Stage to turn the feature off and back on. Then test movement in a well-lit view with the front camera unobstructed. The toggle route is documented by Apple; lighting and obstruction are practical test conditions, not established causes of a Center Stage problem after iPadOS 26.

When to contact Apple Support
12. Escalate if the front camera fails across apps
Contact Apple Support if the front-camera preview fails in more than one app that should support it, or remains unavailable after checking the setting and software version. Describe the exact iPad Pro model, installed iPadOS version, apps tested, whether the camera preview works, and the troubleshooting steps you tried. These checks cannot diagnose hardware remotely, and the available Apple guidance does not establish that this symptom necessarily requires a repair.
