Some risks depend on the situation—public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe, and an app installed outside a familiar store is not automatically malicious—but a few practical checks can reduce your exposure.
Android menus vary by version and manufacturer. If a path below does not match your phone, open Settings and search for the named feature.
1. Don’t install apps from sources you cannot verify
Apps from unknown sources may not have been vetted and can carry more risk than apps from a source you trust. That does not mean every app installed outside a familiar store is malicious; it means you should verify both the developer and the download source independently before installing it. Google’s guidance is to download apps from a source you trust: Android device protection.
- Do instead: Prefer a trusted app store. If you need an app elsewhere, check that the developer’s official site links to that exact download and confirm the developer’s identity before proceeding.
2. Don’t follow an unexpected message’s instructions to install an app
Scammers may use messages about a delivery, voicemail, or technical support to persuade people to install a harmful app. An urgent claim or convincing logo does not verify who sent it.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Do instead: Do not use the message’s link or phone number. Contact the organization through a website or phone number you already know is official, and ask whether the request is genuine. Google describes these scam approaches in its Android scam protection guidance.
3. Don’t grant a permission just because an app asks
Permissions control an app’s access to device capabilities and information. A request should make sense for the feature you want to use: a navigation app may need location, while a simple calculator has little reason to access your contacts.
- Do instead: Review the reason for each request and grant only the access needed for the app’s actual function. You can review permissions in Settings; search for “Permission manager” or “App permissions” if the menu differs. Android may also reset permissions for some apps you have not used for a while. See Google’s Android permission controls and unused app permissions guidance.
4. Don’t enable sensitive restricted settings for an app you do not trust
Some settings give an app unusually broad influence. For example, an app with accessibility access may be able to read screen content and interact with other apps on your behalf. A request to change a sensitive setting is a reason to pause and verify why it is necessary, not a routine step to accept.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
- Do instead: Decline the request unless you trust the app and understand why its function requires that access. Google warns that harmful apps may ask users to change settings that put data at risk in its scam protection guidance.
5. Don’t turn off Google Play Protect without a good reason
Google Play Protect is a built-in Android security layer that is on by default and checks apps and devices for harmful behavior. It is useful protection, not a promise that every threat will be detected.
- Do instead: Leave it enabled unless you have a specific, well-understood reason to change it. To check its status, open the Play Store and search Settings for Play Protect if the menu path differs. Google explains the feature in its Play Protect help.
6. Don’t ignore available system and app updates
Updates can deliver available security fixes and patches. When an update reaches your phone depends on the device and manufacturer, so there is no single schedule that applies to every Android user.

7. Don’t leave your phone without a screen lock
An unlocked phone is easier for someone who gets hold of it to access while it is unattended. A screen lock helps prevent casual access; it cannot protect a phone that has already been unlocked or every account connected to it.
- Do instead: Set a screen-lock method you can use reliably and enable automatic locking after a period of inactivity. Choose the option that fits your device and needs rather than relying on one universal PIN length or biometric setup. Google recommends locking the screen when the device is not in use in its device protection advice.
8. Don’t assume public Wi-Fi is private just because it has a password
A password does not establish that a public network is encrypted or trustworthy. Google cautions users about public or free Wi-Fi, even when a password is required. The risk is conditional: this does not mean every hotspot is compromised, but someone nearby may be able to monitor activity on a network that is not encrypted. See the Google Safety Center security tips.

- Do instead: Avoid entering sensitive information on a public network you do not trust. If you are unsure, wait until you can use a network you trust or a suitable mobile connection.
9. Don’t leave important data without a backup you can restore
A backup can make it possible to recover data when you replace or reset a device, but the coverage depends on what you have configured. Photos, messages, files, and settings may be handled differently, and backup availability can depend on the account and storage setup.
- Do instead: Check that backup is on for the data you care about, which account it uses, and whether the backup has completed. Confirm that you can access the account needed to restore it. Google explains Android backup, transfer, and restore in its backup and restore guide.
10. Don’t keep apps you no longer use or trust
Unused apps can retain permissions and add clutter. Removing apps you no longer need reduces unnecessary access, though uninstalling apps is not a guarantee against malware elsewhere on the phone.

- Do instead: Review your installed apps periodically and uninstall those you do not need or trust. For apps you still use, review their permissions. Google recommends reviewing apps in its device protection advice.
11. Don’t install a modified or rooted Android build without understanding its security and update model
Modified Android versions do not all carry identical risks. Google says modified versions do not receive automatic security updates from Google and may allow apps unrestricted access to data on the device. The consequences depend on the particular build and how it is maintained.
- Do instead: Before changing the operating system or rooting the phone, find out who maintains the build, how security fixes are delivered, and what access apps can gain. If you cannot establish that, stay with the software supported for your device. See Google’s modified Android version guidance.
12. Don’t dismiss Android’s security and privacy alerts
The Security & privacy view can surface information about app security, the device lock, account security, system updates, device finding, and privacy. Its layout and availability vary by device and Android version, so one phone may not show the same items as another.
- Do instead: Open Settings and review Security & privacy when an alert appears. Follow up on the specific issue it identifies; search Settings for “Security” or “Privacy” if you cannot find the section. Google describes the view in its Android security and privacy guidance.
One time-sensitive exception: app verification rollout
Google’s developer-verification help describes a rollout beginning in September 2026 for specified app stores and certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, with a global rollout across all install sources planned for 2027. Those dates and locations are scoped to that policy; they do not mean every Android device or region is covered in the same way today. Check Google’s developer verification information for the applicable details.
