Which SEO crawler should you use to check your sitemap and site coverage? Start with Google Search Console’s Sitemaps report to see how Google processed a sitemap you submitted. Then use an independent crawler—such as Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, or a broader SEO platform—to inspect how a site’s URLs, links, and technical signals fit together. These tools answer different questions: a sitemap report is not a full-site crawl, and a crawl is not proof that Google indexed a URL.

The options below are a practical shortlist, not a hands-on ranking. They include both broad crawlers and narrower coverage aids, labeled by role so you can choose the tool that matches your audit.

What a sitemap crawler can—and cannot—tell you

A sitemap is a file that gives search engines information about pages, videos, and other files on a site, and how those items relate. It can help search engines discover URLs, especially on large or complex sites, but it does not guarantee crawling or indexing. Google’s Search Central documentation puts it plainly: “A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs on your site, but it doesn’t guarantee that all the items in your sitemap will be crawled and indexed.”

People use “sitemap crawler” to mean two different kinds of checks:

  • Search-engine processing: Did Google fetch and parse the sitemap submitted for a property, and what status or parsed URL count does Google report? Search Console’s Sitemaps report answers this from Google’s perspective.
  • Independent site crawling: What pages can a crawler discover by following links or reading a supplied URL list, and what technical issues, directives, canonical signals, or status codes does it find? Desktop and cloud SEO crawlers answer this broader audit question.

A useful coverage check compares three sets: URLs you intend to be indexable, URLs your crawler can discover or fetch, and URLs represented in Google’s indexing reports. A URL appearing in a sitemap or crawl export is not evidence by itself that it is indexed.

12 tools for sitemap checks and SEO coverage

This selection combines first-party reporting, general site crawlers, and narrower aids. Semrush’s comparison published May 22, 2026, covers nine SEO audit tools; the additional options below come from official product descriptions. That is a breadth-based shortlist, not a uniform evaluation or performance ranking. Features, plan terms, and limits can change, so verify current details before buying.

Tool Best fit What the available information establishes
Google Search Console Sitemaps report Checking Google’s reported processing of submitted sitemaps Shows status such as “Success,” “Has errors,” or “Couldn’t fetch,” plus the number of parsed page URLs. Not a general-purpose independent crawler.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider Configurable technical crawling on a desktop Windows, macOS, and Linux; technical audits, XML and image sitemap generation, JavaScript rendering, and Google Analytics, Search Console, and PageSpeed integrations. The vendor lists a free 500-URL crawl allowance.
Sitebulb Desktop Visual explanations and prioritized audit findings Desktop crawler with visualizations, prioritized hints, and reporting. Sitebulb states a default capacity of up to 500,000 URLs per desktop audit; practical capacity depends on the computer.
Sitebulb Cloud Shared crawl data and larger cloud audits Browser-based option for team access. Sitebulb states capacity up to 10 million URLs per cloud audit; this is vendor-stated plan capacity, not a tested speed or guarantee of practical throughput.
Semrush Site Audit Site auditing inside a broader SEO platform Site Audit is included in Semrush SEO plans. Its dated comparison listed a 100-page free allowance; check current plan terms and limits.
Ahrefs Site Audit Auditing a site within Ahrefs’ SEO products Ahrefs distinguishes its full-site Site Audit from its free sitemap generator. The generator uses pages already discovered by Ahrefs’ crawler, has a stated 1,000-URL output limit, and may miss newly added pages until discovered.
SE Ranking Technical audits with progress tracking Included in Semrush’s May 2026 comparison. The comparison listed a 14-day trial; verify present availability and conditions.
Morningscore A technical audit option for readers seeking a beginner-oriented workflow Included in the same dated comparison, which listed a 14-day trial. Confirm current trial and plan details with the vendor.
SEO Pro Extension Quick checks on an individual page Included in Semrush’s comparison as a free quick on-page check. It is not presented as a full-site sitemap crawler.
Netpeak Spider Focused crawl-audit software Included in the dated Semrush comparison; the comparison listed a 3-day trial. Confirm supported scale, features, and current terms directly with the vendor.
Conductor Monitoring Enterprise technical and crawl monitoring Included in Semrush’s comparison as an enterprise option with custom pricing. Verify current availability and terms.
Botify Enterprise-scale web crawling Sitebulb cites Botify as an example of a web-based enterprise crawler. The available product information here does not establish a detailed feature or price comparison.

How to choose by audit need

To verify what Google did with a sitemap

Begin in Google Search Console. Its Sitemaps report is the relevant first-party view for sitemap processing, parsed page URL counts, and reported errors. It is scoped: the report shows sitemaps submitted through the report or API for the current property. A sitemap discovered or submitted another way may not appear there. Check that you selected the right property, including the correct protocol and host variant (for example, https versus http, or www versus non-www).

To diagnose crawl and technical issues

Use a crawler that can inspect more than the sitemap file. Screaming Frog is suited to configurable desktop work and explicitly lists JavaScript rendering and integrations. Sitebulb emphasizes visualizations, issue explanations, and prioritized hints. A broader platform such as Semrush or Ahrefs may suit teams that want auditing alongside other SEO functions; that convenience does not establish that it offers every specialist crawl control.

To handle larger sites or team reporting

Consider whether a desktop crawl’s machine requirements are acceptable or whether shared cloud access is more useful. Sitebulb describes its Cloud option for large audits and shared crawl data, while its desktop FAQ notes that practical desktop crawling is limited by machine specifications. Its stated capacities—up to 500,000 URLs on Desktop by default and up to 10 million in Cloud—are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks. For enterprise options such as Botify or Conductor Monitoring, confirm the current product scope, limits, and commercial terms directly.

To generate a sitemap rather than audit one

Do not confuse sitemap generation with live site auditing. Ahrefs’ free generator builds from pages its crawler has already discovered; its stated output limit is 1,000 URLs, and fresh pages may not appear until the crawler finds them. Ahrefs describes Site Audit separately as its crawl and issue-diagnosis product. Screaming Frog also lists XML and image sitemap generation among its functions.

A practical sitemap and coverage validation workflow

  1. Confirm the property and sitemap URL. In Search Console, select the property matching the site’s canonical protocol and host, then inspect the Sitemaps report. Note the fetch/parse status and parsed page URL count.
  2. Investigate report errors before comparing counts. “Has errors” or “Couldn’t fetch” points to a processing problem to resolve. A missing row can also mean you are viewing a different property or that the sitemap was not submitted through the report or API.
  3. Compare sitemap entries with the intended URL set. Look for redirects, erroring URLs, parameter duplicates, and noncanonical URLs. A larger sitemap is not automatically a better sitemap; the aim is to represent the important URLs you intend search engines to consider.
  4. Run an independent crawl suited to the site. Review internal discovery, HTTP status codes, indexability directives, canonical signals, and JavaScript-dependent content where relevant. Configure rendering if key links or content depend on JavaScript.
  5. Compare the crawl with Google’s indexing view. Use Search Console’s Page indexing report, which can be filtered by sitemap, to investigate differences. A crawler’s discovery and Google’s indexing are separate observations.
  6. Recheck after fixes. Verify the sitemap is fetched successfully and review affected URLs again. No individual report or crawler automatically guarantees indexing.

Limits, cost, and reliability considerations

URL counts are not performance scores

Published crawl limits describe product allowances or vendor-stated capacity, not how quickly or accurately a tool will crawl your particular site. No controlled cross-vendor speed or accuracy comparison is established here. Ahrefs reports that its own crawler crawls more than 8 billion pages every 24 hours; that is a vendor-reported statistic, not a comparative benchmark for a customer’s audit.

Local resources and rendering affect the job

Desktop crawlers use the machine they run on; Sitebulb says its desktop crawl is constrained by machine specifications. JavaScript rendering can be important when content or links are client-rendered, but it changes the crawl setup and can increase resource needs. Validate representative pages and settings rather than assuming one crawl configuration reflects every view of the site.

Check current price and plan limits

Semrush’s 2026 comparison listed free allowances and trial periods for several tools, while official vendor pages describe plan-specific features and capacity. These details can change and may vary by market or plan. Check the vendor’s current pricing and terms before choosing; the information above is not a price comparison or recommendation based on testing.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot companion, not a sitemap crawler

For visual evidence during a page review, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server—not a sitemap crawler and not a replacement for Search Console or an SEO audit. A screenshot can help document what a page rendered like, while crawl and indexing reports answer different questions. Its documented options include full-page capture, CSS selector capture, JavaScript and CSS customization, and PDF output. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request parameters.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo says it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; and an MCP server offers screenshot tools to AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month—no card required.

Why is a sitemap missing from Search Console’s Sitemaps report?

The report covers sitemaps submitted through that report or the API for the selected property. Check the property’s protocol and host variant, and whether the sitemap was submitted another way.

Is Ahrefs’ free sitemap generator the same as Ahrefs Site Audit?

No. The generator builds from URLs Ahrefs has already discovered; Site Audit is described separately as a site-crawling and issue-diagnosis product.
