HTTP clients and debugging proxies solve related but different problems: an HTTP client sends requests you create, while a proxy observes traffic an existing app or device routes through it. The verified options below cover six tools—Postman, Insomnia, Bruno, HTTPie, mitmproxy, and OWASP ZAP—not twelve. The available documentation does not establish a reliable twelve-product field or comparable current pricing and platform details, so this guide does not pad the list with unverified names.

First decide: are you sending requests or inspecting an app?

Use an API client when you want to build a request, set headers or authentication, inspect its response, and repeat the call later. Use a debugging proxy when you need to observe requests made by another application or device. A proxy sees only traffic routed through it; HTTPS inspection also requires a trusted certificate setup, and some applications may prevent inspection.

  • Send and repeat API requests: Postman, Insomnia, Bruno, or HTTPie.
  • Inspect and potentially modify routed traffic: mitmproxy or OWASP ZAP.
  • Need both: Postman combines an API client with a built-in proxy capture capability; the two jobs remain distinct workflows.

Six documented tools, grouped by workflow

Postman: API client with built-in traffic capture

Postman’s desktop app can capture HTTP and HTTPS traffic from configured clients, including requests, responses, and cookies. Captured traffic can be searched or filtered, kept in session history, and saved to collections. Separately, Postman’s proxy settings let the API client make requests through a system proxy, proxy environment variables, or a custom proxy. Choose it when you want request authoring and a documented capture workflow in one desktop app. See Postman’s built-in proxy capture guide and proxy settings documentation.

Insomnia: API design, debugging, and testing

Kong describes Insomnia as an API design, debugging, and testing application. Collections organize requests, folders, environments, and optional OpenAPI specifications; the documentation also covers sending requests, running collections, and writing scripts. Documented request types include HTTP, gRPC, GraphQL, and WebSockets. It is a request-workflow candidate, not evidence of a general-purpose traffic interception proxy. See Kong’s Insomnia documentation and API collections guide.

Bruno: local-first collections and automation

Bruno documents a local-first API client whose collections are plain text and Git-native. Its product documentation lists REST, GraphQL, gRPC, and WebSocket support, plus command-line automation and CI/CD workflows. That makes it relevant when a team wants request definitions stored alongside code. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent security assessment. See Bruno product documentation.

HTTPie: desktop client or terminal workflow

HTTPie offers a cross-platform desktop API testing client for REST, GraphQL, and HTTP APIs, as well as a command-line HTTP client for testing, debugging, and interacting with APIs and servers. Its CLI documentation covers HTTPS, proxies, authentication, JSON, uploads, and formatted output. Choose the interface that fits how you work; the documentation does not establish a comparative performance advantage. See HTTPie Desktop docs and HTTPie CLI docs.

mitmproxy: inspect, change, save, and replay flows

mitmproxy is an interactive SSL/TLS-capable intercepting proxy for HTTP/1, HTTP/2, and WebSockets. Its documentation describes inspecting and modifying requests and responses, saving and replaying conversations, and scripting traffic changes with Python. It provides three interfaces: mitmproxy for an interactive console, mitmweb for a browser interface, and mitmdump for non-interactive output. The getting-started guide uses a local proxy and directs users to install its generated CA certificate to inspect TLS traffic. See mitmproxy introduction and getting started.

OWASP ZAP: proxy-oriented web application testing

OWASP ZAP publishes API and developer documentation. Its API reference describes the API UI when proxying through ZAP or connecting to the host and port where it listens. Treat ZAP as a web-application testing and proxy-oriented option, not as a fully evaluated substitute for every general API client: the cited API page alone does not establish its complete feature set. How to choose for a real workflow

Tool Best-fit workflow Documented interfaces and strengths What the cited documentation does not establish
Postman Author API calls and capture configured clients’ traffic Desktop app; request collections; proxy capture of requests, responses, and cookies Comparative performance, full platform or price comparison
Insomnia Design, debug, test, and run organized API requests Application; collections, environments, scripts; HTTP, gRPC, GraphQL, WebSockets That it acts as a general traffic interception proxy
Bruno Keep API collections with code and automate runs Local-first, plain-text Git-native collections; CLI and CI/CD documentation Independent verification of security guarantees
HTTPie Send API calls in a GUI or terminal Desktop and CLI; CLI docs list HTTPS, proxies, auth, JSON, and uploads Comparative speed or performance
mitmproxy Inspect or modify traffic routed through a proxy Console, web, and dump interfaces; TLS-capable interception, replay, Python scripting Universal visibility into every app’s encrypted traffic
OWASP ZAP Proxy-oriented web application testing API and developer documentation; API UI access through its proxy or listening host and port A complete comparison against general API clients from the cited API page alone

Before choosing, check these practical dimensions against your actual environment:

  • Protocol: confirm that the tool documents the protocol you need. The profiles above name only documented protocols.
  • Repeatability: decide whether you need saved collections, scripts, command-line runs, or CI integration.
  • Where data lives: if collections must live in Git or remain local, Bruno’s documented local-first plain-text model is relevant. Verify the current storage and collaboration behavior of any other candidate you evaluate.
  • Interface: choose desktop, terminal, browser, or a combination based on who will reproduce the issue and how.
  • Capture versus requests: a proxy will not show traffic that the application or device never routes to it.
  • Commercial and platform details: compare current vendor pages before purchase. The documented sources here do not provide a common, current pricing or platform matrix.

Set up authorized HTTPS traffic inspection

Only inspect devices and traffic you own or are authorized to test. For a proxy to capture an application’s traffic, configure that client or device to route requests through the proxy. To inspect TLS contents, mitmproxy’s guide calls for installing its generated CA certificate; Postman likewise documents certificate installation for HTTPS capture. Neither setup guarantees that every application can be inspected: certificate pinning or other application constraints can interfere.

LONELY BINARY Logic Analyzer Kit, 8 Channel 24MHz USB with Breakout Boards
  • 【High-Speed 8-Channel Analysis】Captures digital signals at up to 24MHz across 8 channels, enabling precise debugging of complex protocols like I2C, SPI, and UART—ideal for advanced STEM projects without the limitations of basic 4-channel models.
  • 【User-Friendly Design】Base module and breakout board simplify connections to breadboards, microcontrollers, and other setups.
  • 【Logic Level Expansion Board】Breaks out all 8 channels to 2.54mm male pins and pads for alligator clips, enabling flexible and secure connections in diverse projects.
  • 【Logic Level Breadboard Adapter】 Easily connects the logic analyzer to breadboards, providing direct and convenient access to all 8 channels for prototyping and testing.
  • 【Dual USB Connectivity】Comes with both USB-A and Type-C cables for universal compatibility with older PCs, modern laptops, and devices, ensuring hassle-free plug-and-play across Windows, Mac, Linux, and Ubuntu.
  1. Start with the proxy’s official setup guide. For mitmproxy, choose mitmproxy, mitmweb, or mitmdump according to whether you need an interactive console, browser interface, or non-interactive output.
  2. Route only the intended client. Configure the test client or device to use the proxy endpoint shown by the tool. If traffic does not appear, first verify routing and that the app is making the request you expect.
  3. Install the tool’s generated CA certificate when HTTPS inspection is needed. Follow the tool’s instructions for the particular test device. Do this only in an authorized test environment.
  4. Reproduce one request and inspect the flow. Check the request, response, headers, and cookies as relevant. If TLS contents remain unavailable, consider app-level certificate restrictions rather than assuming the proxy is broken.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is to capture a webpage as an image or PDF rather than inspect an app’s API traffic, ScreenshotNeo is a different, purpose-built option. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture by default. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits cost nothing, with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers explaining the outcome. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to AI agents.

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo includes every feature on every plan. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. For a request-and-response API client or an intercepting proxy, use the tool profiles above instead; ScreenshotNeo is for webpage capture. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Troubleshooting common proxy problems

No traffic appears

The client may not be routing through the proxy, or it may not have made a request during the capture session. Check the client’s proxy configuration, host and port, and reproduce a known request. Postman’s capture guide and mitmproxy’s getting-started page document their respective setups.

HTTPS traffic appears but contents are not readable

Follow the proxy’s documented CA installation process on the test device. If the app still refuses inspection, certificate pinning or another application restriction may be responsible. The available documentation does not support a claim that every app’s TLS traffic can be decrypted.

Need to repeat or automate the same request

Use a client that documents collections, scripts, or CLI execution for your use case: Insomnia documents collections and scripts, Bruno documents command-line automation and CI/CD workflows, and HTTPie documents a CLI client. Confirm the current behavior in each vendor’s documentation before adopting it in a team pipeline.

Frequently asked questions

Is an HTTP client the same thing as a debugging proxy?

No. A client sends requests you construct; a proxy observes traffic that another client routes through it. Postman documents both functions in its desktop app, but they remain different jobs.
