If you want a WordPress site with moving imagery behind its content, first decide whether you need a portfolio theme with project-level video, a multipurpose theme with a video-ready layout, or just a video section on an otherwise standard site. The most directly documented video-first choices here are Inspiro Premium, Reel, Rezzo, Inspiro PRO, and Vice; Sydney, Astra, Divi, Hestia Pro, and Ultra offer broader approaches. Their features below come from published descriptions, not independent hands-on testing, so confirm current capabilities, pricing, and compatibility before buying.

How these video-background options differ

A video background is not the same as an ordinary video embed. A background typically plays behind text or other content; it may fill a hero, header, page section, portfolio project, or hover preview. The ten options below include both dedicated video-oriented themes and multipurpose themes whose video features depend on a particular layout or builder.

Theme Documented video approach Best fit to investigate
Inspiro Premium WPZOOM describes fullscreen video-background slideshows, YouTube, Vimeo, and self-hosted video, hover-triggered backgrounds, and Elementor templates. Video-forward portfolio or product showcase
Reel WPZOOM describes homepage autoplay background video, project-specific video headers, hover-triggered GIPHY previews, YouTube, Vimeo, self-hosted video, and mobile/tablet compatibility. Filmmaker or creative portfolio
Rezzo WPZOOM describes autoplay backgrounds in portfolio sections, hover-triggered gallery playback, and YouTube, Vimeo, and self-hosted video. Minimalist portfolio
Inspiro PRO WPZOOM describes fullscreen slideshows, hover-activated backgrounds, YouTube, Vimeo, self-hosted video, and prebuilt Elementor templates. Portfolio or showcase using Elementor
Vice WPZOOM describes fullscreen MP4 video backgrounds in a one-page music and entertainment design. Music or entertainment brand whose style suits the design
Sydney WPBeginner says it offers more than 30 starter sites, including a video theme, and describes it as responsive and speed-oriented. That does not establish a native background-video control in every layout. Business site starting from a video-oriented starter design
Astra WPBeginner describes a multipurpose theme with starter sites that support video and compatibility with page-builder plugins. The actual background feature depends on the selected starter site or builder setup. General-purpose site where the chosen starter design meets the need
Divi WPBeginner describes a theme and page builder with layouts supporting video in backgrounds, headers, and sliders. Flexible site assembled with a builder
Hestia Pro WPBeginner says it allows a custom video header or homepage video background and supports page builders. Business homepage with a video header or background
Ultra WPBeginner describes a multipurpose theme with a fullscreen video background, importable sites, and Themify Builder. Site built from an importable design with a fullscreen background

Feature descriptions are attributed to WPZOOM’s 2026 video-background theme roundup and WPBeginner’s 2026 video-theme roundup. These are published descriptions, not a comparative performance test. Verify that the specific demo and current theme version provide the control and behavior you need.

Five video-first themes for portfolios and showcases

Inspiro Premium

WPZOOM describes fullscreen video-background slideshows, support for YouTube, Vimeo, and self-hosted video, hover-triggered backgrounds, and Elementor templates. That combination is worth investigating for a portfolio or product showcase that needs motion in more than one place. WPZOOM listed it at $69 per year in its September 25, 2026 article; pricing and license terms can change.

Reel

Reel is the portfolio-focused choice in WPZOOM’s descriptions: its feature set includes an autoplay video background on the homepage, project-specific video headers, and hover-triggered GIPHY previews, as well as YouTube, Vimeo, and self-hosted video support. WPZOOM also describes mobile and tablet compatibility; check the actual layout on target devices rather than assuming that background playback behaves identically at every screen size. The article listed $69 per year.

Rezzo

Rezzo is described as a minimalist portfolio theme with autoplay backgrounds in portfolio sections and hover-triggered gallery playback. WPZOOM says it supports YouTube, Vimeo, and self-hosted video. Its listed price was $79 per year in the September 25, 2026 article.

Inspiro PRO

WPZOOM describes fullscreen slideshows, hover-activated backgrounds, YouTube, Vimeo, and self-hosted video support, plus prebuilt Elementor templates. It is a candidate when a portfolio needs several video treatments and Elementor is part of the intended setup. The roundup listed it at $69 per year.

Vice

Vice is aimed at music and entertainment sites, with a one-page design and fullscreen MP4 video backgrounds, according to WPZOOM. It is more visually specific than a general portfolio theme, so the design fit matters as much as the video feature. The roundup listed it at $59 per year.

All five prices above are the figures WPZOOM published on September 25, 2026, not guaranteed current quotes. Check the vendor’s current product page for price, renewal, license scope, support, and updates.

Five multipurpose options with video-capable designs

Sydney

WPBeginner describes Sydney as offering more than 30 starter sites, one of which is a video theme. Treat that as a specific starting design—not proof that every Sydney page or header has a built-in background-video setting. Its roundup also characterizes it as responsive and speed-oriented; measure the real page with its video and other assets.

Astra

Astra is presented by WPBeginner as a multipurpose theme with video-supporting starter sites and page-builder compatibility. The selected starter design and builder configuration determine whether the result has a true background video, rather than an embedded player or another video treatment.

Divi

WPBeginner describes Divi as both a theme and page builder, with layouts that support video in backgrounds, headers, and sliders. This broad flexibility may suit a site that needs custom layouts beyond a video-first portfolio, but confirm which controls and design components are available in the current version.

Hestia Pro

WPBeginner says Hestia Pro supports a custom video header or homepage video background and works with page builders. Check the current version and purchase details, and make sure the feature applies to the template you plan to use.

Ultra

WPBeginner describes Ultra as a multipurpose theme with a fullscreen video background, importable sites, and Themify Builder. Confirm the current product, compatibility, and whether its video treatment is available in the imported design you want.

Choose by where the video needs to appear

  • Filmmaker or creative portfolio: Prioritize project-specific headers, portfolio-section backgrounds, hover previews, and the video sources you already use. Reel, Rezzo, and the Inspiro options have portfolio-oriented features in WPZOOM’s descriptions.
  • Business or product landing page: Look for a fullscreen hero or header, readable text over the video, and the ability to use video in more than one section. A multipurpose theme, builder, or WordPress block may be enough if you do not need portfolio-specific features.
  • Brand with a strong visual identity: Consider whether the theme’s overall design is flexible enough. Vice’s music-oriented one-page style, for example, should be chosen only if that aesthetic fits.
  • Self-hosted media: Confirm support for uploaded video files and think through file size, hosting capacity, and loading behavior. Support for YouTube or Vimeo does not by itself establish self-hosted support, or vice versa.
  • Mobile visitors: Test playback and fallback behavior on phones and tablets. A background may be disabled or replaced by a poster image on a smaller screen; do not infer exact behavior from a general “responsive” claim.

WordPress can add a video background without a video-first theme

The WordPress Cover block can place video behind text, buttons, and other blocks, with controls for an overlay, height, and focal point. That can be sufficient for a hero or banner when the rest of the site uses a standard theme. See WordPress.com’s Cover block documentation.

The WordPress Video block provides autoplay, loop, mute, inline-playback, preload, and poster-image controls. The official WordPress Video block documentation warns that downloading the entire video on page load can have the greatest impact on loading speed; setting preload to “None” delays download until a visitor presses play. Those player controls are not automatically a substitute for testing a theme’s background-video implementation.

If you want a section-level background feature independent of the theme, the WordPress.org listing for Video Background Block describes a Gutenberg plugin with self-hosted or hosted video, fallback image, and overlay controls. Its listing says it works with any WordPress theme and identifies responsive video sources and poster images among Pro features. Check the current listing for version, compatibility, and pricing.

WordPress’s developer-facing Theme Handbook video guidance documents shortcode options such as autoplay, looping, poster images, sizing, and supported file extensions. This is implementation guidance for theme developers; it does not mean a particular consumer theme exposes those options in its editor.

What to verify before choosing

  1. Check the scope of the feature. Open the demo or starter site and identify whether video appears as a fullscreen hero, header, individual section background, project header, or hover preview. An ordinary embedded video is a different feature.
  2. Confirm video sources. Check whether the exact layout supports YouTube, Vimeo, self-hosted files, or only a subset. If a provider or file type matters to your workflow, verify it directly in current product documentation.
  3. Test fallback and legibility. Confirm that a poster or fallback image appears when video cannot play, and check text contrast over both the video and its fallback. WordPress’s Cover block offers an overlay and focal-point adjustment.
  4. Inspect mobile behavior. Test on the devices and breakpoints that matter to your visitors. Check whether the video plays, becomes a still image, or is omitted, and whether the layout remains useful either way.
  5. Check loading behavior with your media. Large or eagerly downloaded video files can slow a page. WordPress documents preload controls for the Video block, but a theme or plugin may implement backgrounds differently; assess the actual site rather than relying on broad speed claims.
  6. Review dependencies and upkeep. Establish whether the design needs Elementor, another builder, a vendor-specific slideshow, or an additional plugin. Check current updates, support, compatibility, license scope, and renewal terms before purchase.

A related marketplace category can help surface candidates, but listings alone do not verify feature quality or compatibility: ThemeForest’s video-background WordPress search is best treated as a discovery list.

An alternative if you want to build a custom theme

SeedProd is not a conventional theme in this comparison. WPBeginner describes it as a theme builder with templates, custom theme creation, and video blocks. Consider it when you prefer assembling a custom design instead of choosing a standard theme, and verify the current feature set and requirements before committing.
