Games can give you useful practice with programming logic, debugging, command-line thinking, security concepts, and automation. For a beginner, CodeCombat and Human Resource Machine are approachable starting points; Hacknet offers a terminal-based hacking simulation; and several Zachtronics-style puzzles reward the decomposition and optimization habits that also matter in systems work. None of them, on its own, proves you can build secure software or operate production infrastructure.

The best choice depends on what you want to practise. The ten games below range from typed Python or JavaScript to visual puzzles, custom instruction sets, assembly-style challenges, and automation simulations. Treat them as focused exercises—not as substitutes for building and operating real systems.

How the games compare

“Coding game” can mean anything from writing a familiar programming language to solving a puzzle with a made-up instruction set. This comparison distinguishes real-language practice from systems concepts and security-themed simulation.

Game Main practice Code or interface What the challenge emphasizes
CodeCombat Beginner programming Typed Python or JavaScript Writing code and seeing its effects in an adventure
Human Resource Machine Programming logic Visual puzzle with a small command set Decomposition, correctness, program size, and execution speed
TIS-100 Low-level systems thinking Assembly-style puzzle language Repairing code and optimizing cycles, instructions, and nodes
Shenzhen I/O Circuits and embedded-style logic Circuits, logic, and assembly-style coding Making hardware and code work together
Hacknet Command-line and security orientation Terminal simulation using UNIX commands Following missions and tackling simulated firewall challenges
Nite Team 4 Ethical-hacking orientation Simulation; detailed language information not stated in the cited university material Exploring Linux and ethical-hacking themes
Screeps JavaScript automation JavaScript, with external-editor support listed in a programming-game catalogue Programming entities that act continuously in a persistent world
Elevator Saga JavaScript optimization JavaScript simulation Controlling elevators against changing workloads
Microcorruption Low-level debugging and exploit reasoning MSP430 assembly Finding bugs in electronic-lock challenges
SpaceChem Automation and pipeline thinking Visual automation puzzle Coordinating processes and managing throughput

Games for learning to code

CodeCombat: write code and get immediate feedback

CodeCombat is designed to make computer science accessible through typed code. Its adventure format can make beginner Python or JavaScript practice feel more concrete: you write instructions, observe what happens, and adjust them. The official CodeCombat page currently self-reports more than 20 million total players, reach in more than 190 countries, one billion lines of code, and more than 650 contributors. These are the organization’s own current-page figures, not an independent assessment of learning outcomes.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose it when you want an approachable introduction to actual language syntax. Game progress can encourage you to keep practising, but it is not a measure of how well you can structure a larger application or debug code outside the game.

Human Resource Machine: learn to break a task into instructions

Human Resource Machine turns programming into a visual office-automation puzzle. You arrange commands to move and process data; the instruction set starts with two commands and grows to eleven. Optional challenges put pressure on program size or execution speed, so a solution that works is not always the most efficient one.

This is a good choice if you are new to programming logic but do not yet want to deal with conventional language syntax. The transferable exercise is figuring out the smallest clear sequence of steps that produces the required result.

Screeps: practise JavaScript automation over time

In Screeps, programmable JavaScript entities operate in a persistent multiplayer world. The ongoing activity makes it a useful setting for thinking about event loops, APIs, and automation that keeps running rather than completing as a single puzzle. A programming-game catalogue also lists support for using an external editor.

That persistent feedback can prompt useful questions: what should a script do next, what state should it track, and how can you tell whether its behavior is working? These resemble operational questions, but a game world is not a production service with real users, reliability requirements, or consequences for failure.

Elevator Saga: optimize a controller as demand changes

Elevator Saga is a JavaScript simulation in which you write the logic that controls elevator movement. It gives you a compact way to iterate against changing demand and consider instrumentation, throughput, and optimization: observe a result, change the controller, then see how the system responds.

Use it to practise improving a working solution under a workload, rather than assuming that a single clever rule will fit every situation. Its simulated results are useful feedback within the game, not evidence of performance in a real building.

Games for hacking and security concepts

Hacknet: explore a simulated terminal

Hacknet is a terminal-based hacking simulator for PC. Its Steam description says it uses actual UNIX commands; the game includes guided email missions, firewall challenges, and beginner support. That makes it the clearest choice in this list for getting oriented to command-line interaction in a deliberately simulated setting.

Hacknet Extensions adds a creation angle: players can make campaigns, system networks, nodes, themes, and missions. That is useful for thinking about how a sequence of tasks and interconnected systems can be represented in a scenario. The simulation does not certify real-world penetration-testing skill or authorize activity on real systems.

Nite Team 4: an ethical-hacking and Linux-themed simulation

Ionian University informatics teaching material groups Nite Team 4 with “Linux, Ethical Hacking.” That supports treating it as an orientation tool for those themes, not as proof that a player can conduct a professional security assessment. The cited material does not establish a specific programming language or a direct comparison with the other games here.

Microcorruption: reason about bugs at a low level

Microcorruption is an MSP430 assembly exploitation game built around finding bugs in electronic-lock challenges. Its low-level framing provides a way to encounter registers, memory, debugging, and exploit reasoning in a controlled puzzle context.

It is a better fit after you are ready to think about how a program behaves close to the hardware than as a first introduction to everyday application programming. Solving its challenges is not a replacement for learning defensive security practice or testing only systems you are authorized to assess.

Games for systems, optimization, and automation habits

TIS-100: repair and optimize low-level programs

Zachtronics describes TIS-100 as an open-ended programming game in which players rewrite corrupted code segments to repair the machine and unlock its secrets. The puzzle language is assembly-style, and the game provides sandboxes for experimentation. Challenges can ask you to optimize cycle count, instruction count, or node count, forcing you to weigh different measures rather than treating “it works” as the only goal.

That constraint-driven work builds habits useful in systems programming: isolate a problem, test a change, and understand what the change costs. It does not teach the full toolchain or operating environment used to maintain real systems.

Shenzhen I/O: connect logic, circuits, and code

Shenzhen I/O combines building devices with writing code. A programming-game catalogue describes it as building circuits and writing code, while Ionian University teaching material groups it with circuits, logic, and assembly. It can help make the relationship between a program’s instructions and the system around them more tangible.

Pick it if you are curious about embedded-style problem solving and want to consider how code and hardware constraints interact. It is more specialized than a beginner game centered on everyday Python or JavaScript.

SpaceChem: think in pipelines and bottlenecks

SpaceChem is a visual automation puzzle listed under “Principles of Automation” in Ionian University informatics teaching material. It is not a conventional programming-language course. Its value for systems-minded players is the opportunity to reason about coordinated processes, throughput, bottlenecks, repeatable steps, and isolating failures in a pipeline-like task.

Those are relevant ways of thinking about automation, but solving a SpaceChem puzzle does not teach deployment, monitoring, incident response, or the day-to-day operation of a software service.

What games can—and cannot—teach about DevOps

Several of these games exercise habits that transfer to systems work: breaking a complicated task into smaller parts, testing changes, watching the result, optimizing within constraints, and automating repeatable actions. TIS-100, Shenzhen I/O, Screeps, Elevator Saga, and SpaceChem approach those habits from different angles.

DevOps work also involves deploying and operating real services. Games alone do not establish experience with production infrastructure, collaboration, service reliability, security responsibilities, or responding to failures with real consequences. Use a game to practise a narrow concept, then build on that practice with real tools and appropriately scoped projects.

A practical order for choosing your first game

  1. If you are new to programming, try Human Resource Machine to practise logic without conventional syntax, or CodeCombat if you want to type Python or JavaScript.
  2. If you want to automate behavior in JavaScript, try Elevator Saga for a compact controller challenge or Screeps for programmable entities in a persistent world.
  3. If you want command-line and security orientation, start with Hacknet. Approach Nite Team 4 as a simulation, and choose Microcorruption when low-level assembly and exploit reasoning are the goal.
  4. If you are interested in systems constraints and automation, try TIS-100 or Shenzhen I/O for low-level and hardware-oriented puzzles, or SpaceChem for pipeline-style automation thinking.

There is no authoritative head-to-head ranking of these ten games in the cited material. The most useful one is the game whose kind of practice matches your next learning goal—and whose feedback makes you willing to keep experimenting.
