There is no reliable current ranking of the best Amazon Echo skills, and the familiar Amazon list behind this topic dates to 2018. Use these ten ideas as a task-based shortlist—not a promise that every named skill still works or is available in your region. Search each name in the Alexa app before enabling it; Amazon’s current help directs users to More > Skills & Games to browse or search.
What an Alexa skill is—and how to find one
Amazon describes skills as voice experiences that add capabilities to Alexa devices, including Echo speakers. You start one with a spoken request; Alexa processes the request and routes it to the service that can respond. Skills can provide content, games, and smart-home controls.
In the Alexa app, open More > Skills & Games, then browse categories or search for a name. Those labels come from Amazon UK’s help page; wording and catalog availability may differ by market. You can also ask Alexa how to discover skills. Check the listing in your own account for current availability, permissions, account-linking requirements, and any price or paid terms. The sources do not establish that all skills are free.
10 skill ideas for different Echo tasks
The first nine names below appeared in Amazon’s March 29, 2018 roundup. That page is historical, not a current recommendation list: its headline and introduction promise ten skills, but the rendered list contains only nine. The descriptions here summarize what Amazon said at the time; verify a skill’s current listing and behavior before relying on it.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

10. A household Blueprint for custom routines or answers
Amazon’s Blueprints catalog displays customizable examples such as Custom Q&A, Chore Chart, Whose Turn, and How Many Days. They can suit household questions, turn-taking, or chore tracking; check your account and region for availability.

A routine groups actions and can be triggered by voice, a time, or a smart-home device. It can serve as a memorable shortcut when an experience’s invocation name is awkward to remember. Amazon’s developer guide describes routines as a way to automate actions; its separate Alexa Routines Kit for developers was discontinued effective May 13, 2026. That notice concerns the developer kit, not ordinary customer routines.

Check privacy and permissions before enabling a skill
Amazon says relevant information may be shared with a skill developer when you interact with a skill. Depending on the request, that can include a trivia answer, a ZIP code for a weather request, or request content that may include transcripts. Before enabling a skill—especially one that asks you to link an account—review its listing and permissions. Amazon says you can see and manage skill permissions in Alexa Privacy settings.
Smart-home integrations involve additional device information. Amazon says it may receive a connected device’s type, name, features, status, and usage history, including changes made outside Alexa. You can review recent history, delete it, or set automatic deletion after three or 18 months. Deleting that history does not necessarily remove device names, device types, or voice requests about those devices.
